  On Wednesday, 12 August 1981, Jennifer Cardy rode to her friend’s house on her new bike, but never arrived. The nine-year-old’s red bicycle was found thrown over a hedge a mile down her road the next day; she herself was found dead six days later.

  In the village of Cornhill-on-Tweed, in the Scottish Borders, eleven-year-old Susan Maxwell was abducted and murdered by Black when walking home after playing tennis with a friend, 30 July 1982.

  A year after murdering Susan Maxwell, Black abducted and murdered five-year-old Caroline Hogg in a similar manner, following her towards her local beach. She was found by a motorist ten days later in Twycross, Leicestershire.

  Sarah Harper, only ten years old, disappeared during the night of 26 March 1986 as she collected a loaf of bread from a local shop for her mother. Her body was found by a dog walker three and a half weeks later along the bank of the River Trent, Nottingham, 19 April 1986.

  On Saturday, 9 May 1987, ten-year-old Virginie Delmas did not return home after saying she had gone to play with friends; she never arrived. Her body was found five months later in an orchard in Mareuil-lès-Meaux, east of Paris, by a couple picking apples.

  On Wednesday, 3 June 1987, seven-year-old Perrine Vigneron was declared missing after not turning up for her pottery class. Her body was found three weeks later, three miles from the village from which Virginie Delmas had been abducted.

  In Germany on Thursday, 11 May 1989, Ramona Herling left her house to walk the short distance to her local open-air swimming complex. She was never seen again.
