Brie’s heart melted. Smiling down at her flat stomach, she imagined it big and round and told him, “I can’t wait to share this experience with you.”
Sir asked Faelan, Captain, Marquis and Rytsar to meet them at the beach house. None of them suspected the reason for the meeting or why Sir had called them on such short notice—except Rytsar.
The moment he walked in and saw the assembly, he looked at Brie and cocked his head. “Is there something you want to tell me, radost moya?”
The others naturally turned to stare at her.
With Sir nodding his approval, Brie faced the four of them. “Sir and I have an announcement.”
Looking at Rytsar tenderly, she said, “You are going to be a dyadya again.”
Rytsar let out a shout of joy and demanded, “Where’s the vodka? We must make a toast!”
Captain immediately gave Brie his best wishes and Faelan slapped Sir on the back in congratulations, while Marquis stared at the two of them intently, a slight smile on his face.
Brie was getting the shot glasses out of the cupboard when she heard the doorbell ring.
“Brie, open up!”
Recognizing Mary’s voice, she immediately left the kitchen and ran to open the door.
“You’re never going to believe it!” Mary declared, waltzing into the house. “Something incredible is happ…en…ing…” Her voice trailed off when her gaze landed on Faelan.
Turning to Brie, she demanded, “What’s going on here, Stinks?”
Rytsar handed her a shot glass. “We are toasting my dyadya-hood.”
Mary stared at Brie, stunned. “You’re not…”
Brie nodded excitedly.
She looked at Brie in disbelief, then snorted. “Well, you better get your shit together.”
“Why do you say that?” Brie laughed.
“There’s been an underground mutiny and Greg is livid about it! It seems someone is moving through the ranks, making a disturbance and riling things up in Hollywood, but nobody knows who.”
“What do you mean?” Brie asked, her heart suddenly racing.
“Word on the street has it that an anonymous donor is gathering together resources in the film industry. I’m talking the best of the best, and Greg suspects whoever is behind this is about to make you an offer.”
“How is this even possible?” Brie exclaimed, giddy at the thought.
“Naturally, Greg is fucking losing his shit. Whoever this person is, they are a master at covering their tracks. Nobody—and I mean, nobody—has been able to discover their identity. This is big, Stinks. Like, hella big in the film world.”
Brie smiled at Sir, shaking her head in amazement. She was certain it was Finn. He’d come through for her when no one else had the courage to.
Mary’s eyes flashed with excitement. “I have a feeling that Humpty Dumpty is about to have a great fall and I can’t wait to see Greg crack into a million little pieces.”
Brie still couldn’t believe that Finn was risking so much to make that happen. He couldn’t know that in helping her, he was going to set Mary free, too.
Eying all the men gathered, something must have clicked because Mary suddenly frowned. “Brie…what’s going on with Lilly?”
She wasn’t surprised that Mary had been so quick to figure it out. Giving Sir a worried look, she wasn’t sure how to answer her friend.
Coming over to Mary, Sir said, “I was hoping to spare you from being involved, Miss Wilson. Since you are personally acquainted with the person in question and the risk she poses is great to you, you are welcome to stay. However, you are under no obligation and are free to go.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Sir Davis.”
He nodded. “Very well.”
Handing Brie a shot glass of coconut milk, Sir winked at her.
Rytsar shouted to everyone, “Let’s make a toast to me and the new babe!”
Brie broke out in giggles.
Raising the shot glass Sir handed him, Rytsar’s eyes shone with love for them both. Making a formal toast, he said, “To my brother and his beautiful wife. Here’s to the new addition to their family.”
With murmurs of congratulations all around, everyone tipped back their glasses. Rytsar suddenly spewed the contents of his drink all over himself and started gagging.
“Funny, I must have mixed up the glasses.” Sir chuckled as he held up his shot of vodka to Rytsar and winked. “Consequences….”
Rytsar growled as he swiped his mouth to the uproarious laughter of his friends.
When Faelan’s phone started ringing, he excused himself to take it. As Brie was handing Rytsar a kitchen towel to dry off with, she noticed the serious expression on Faelan’s face while he was talking.
“Is everything okay?” she asked after he hung up.
He shook his head, a dazed look on his face. “Kylie’s been rushed to the emergency room. I have to go.”
“Do you want one of us to go with you?”
“No, I’ll be fine.” Faelan rushed out the door as a stunned silence fell over the room.
“I hope Kylie is all right,” Brie whimpered to Sir.
Captain spoke up. “Whatever’s happened, she’s getting the care she needs.”
Brie nodded, appreciating Captain’s calming wisdom. Looking at Sir, she was reminded of the night Captain and Candy knocked on her door to inform her about the plane crash, and she shivered.
“Despite this unexpected turn of events, I think we should sit down and discuss your concerns about Lilly,” Marquis stated. “It is more important, now than ever, that Brie is protected from her.”
As everyone moved into the great room to sit, Brie was distracted as she stared down at her stomach. She marveled at the fact that new life was growing inside her. She glanced up and caught Sir staring.
He nodded, a smile playing on his lips as he turned to speak to the group.
Brie realized that life was a strange mix of pain and pleasure.
All of it—the good and the bad—had made her into the person she was now. Even if she could, Brie knew she wouldn’t change any of it.
