The Alice Murders

Page 30

by James Arklie

It was time to let go.

Angie coughed gently and brought Kline back from his thoughts.

He smiled. ‘We okay?’ Angie had lied and covered for him big time. But in those final moments of murder, she had understood as well.

She gave Kline a sad smile. Kline had managed to find a way of escaping his darkness, Angie was still deep in black labyrinth.

She shifted in her chair. ‘Promise me one thing?’ Kline nodded. Promises were no longer a problem.

Her voice was solemn, heavy, carrying a load. ‘When the time comes, when I find the bastard that stole my Carly…’ She leaned towards Kline, intensity flooding from her. She glanced towards the door, turned back and dropped her voice to a whisper.

‘When it’s my turn, promise me you’ll….’

Kline put a finger to her lips to quieten her and gave a gentle nod of his head. ‘Sshhh. Of course.’

  Because.

  After all.

  When we’re pushed.

  When we’re desperate.

Isn’t there a psychopath lurking inside all of us?

  THE END
