The Rebound Effect

“Thank you for being there for Aiden,” she said. “Let me get a robe, and I’ll give you back your jacket.” He let go of her, but followed her into the bedroom. She opened the closet door, and then she saw him staring at the bed, where the ropes were still tied. She gestured toward the belt and indicated her neck. He looked at her, shocked, without words. She was glad he hadn’t seen her helpless and vulnerable.
She took off his jacket, put on a warm robe, cinched the belt tight, and stepped into her slippers. “I was so scared,” she said abruptly. Brett put his arms around her again. His hand was on her hair. Awkwardly, uncertainly, he kissed her. He had been foolish. She had been foolish. None of it mattered now.
“Mama?” Aiden called from the kitchen.
“Is there any triple chocolate left?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Brett said. “Let’s go finish it off.”
Hands linked, they went to join Aiden in the kitchen. “What are you doing on Thanksgiving?” Teresa asked.
