I am just lamenting about having to fly that distance with my hands tied behind my back when the helicopter slows suddenly. Surely, we can’t have reached our destination already, I think, we are still over North London and inside the quarantine zone?

Briggs and the two other Special Forces operatives begin to make movements to get their kit together, as is natural when a journey nears its conclusion. I look out of the window again in confusion to see if we are where I thought we were. The view confirms that we are still over North London, St Pancras train station is clearly visible below, which dispels any doubt.

The pilot brings the helicopter to a stop, hovering over what I see is the red-bricked building of the British Library, then we begin to descend. I am totally confused, why on earth would we be stopping at the British Library? I am sorely tempted to ask the question, but I resist, knowing Briggs will only toy with me.

We touch down, not in the grounds of the library but on its highest roof. Simms and his partner are up and out of their seats immediately, he pulls the hold door open and both men jump down onto the roof and take up covering positions, their rifles scanning the rooftop area.

Briggs is out next and the only person left in the hold with me is the door gunner who helps me up out of my seat and down onto the library’s roof. Briggs takes hold of my arm and leads me out from beneath the helicopter’s rotors.

Simms moves past us and heads to a doorway jutting out from the roof. Behind us, as soon as we are clear, the helicopter powers its engines and lifts straight up before dipping its nose and flying off.

Simms stops next to the door and looks up towards a camera positioned just above the door frame, a green light flashes and he moves aside for his partner to do the same. Another green light is shown and then Briggs looks up to the camera. A buzzing noise sounds before I get a go at looking up to have my eyes scanned, and Simms pulls the door open.

Briggs and I are last through the door which swings shut behind us. Inside is a stairwell, and without pausing we start to descend two flights down into what was once a doorway that must have led into the library. The exit has had a thick steel plate fitted over it, however, sealing it completely. In fact, every exit out of the stairwell is sealed off, I see as we continue down.

One set of stairs follows another, and I begin to pant from the excursion hoping that I don’t slip and fall, especially with both of my hands out of action. Eventually, Simms comes to a stop at the bottom of the stairwell and faces a door, he reaches for the door handle just as another buzzing noise sounds, and pulls it open.

Beyond the door does not lead into the library but to another stairwell which Simms starts to lead us down. I notice that the previous floors sealed exits have now disappeared, and I start to wish I had counted how many flights of stairs we have descended. I am sure we must have descended far deeper than the structure of the library, as it isn’t that tall, and suddenly realise we have gone beneath the ground level of the library. We must have, and the last door we entered through was the threshold.

All at once, while I am still trying to figure out what is going on, we reach the bottom of the second stairwell. Yet another door buzzes which Simms pulls open, and then to my surprise I find myself walking horizontally along a tunnel, one that I cannot see to the end of.

The roof of the tunnel is just above my head and the sides just wide enough for two people. I have lost my bearings and have no idea which direction we are travelling; all I can do is keep following.

After around ten minutes of walking, I can finally see the end of the tunnel ahead and it looks like we are approaching another doorway. As we get closer, I see words painted in red on the door and what looks like another camera above it. I squint, trying to read the letters, but it isn’t until Simms stops in front of the door that I can finally read the red-painted words. They read, STATION ZERO.

  The fight continues in
