Meant to be Yours

“Can I get everyone’s attention?” I spoke into the mic. The party was still going, but there was one thing I needed to do before our guests began making their way out.

As in any time I asked for a room to pay attention to me, everyone in attendance did so without question.

“First off, we want to thank all of you for attending our son’s first birthday. We hope you all are enjoying yourselves. As you know, the food came from Mr. Lewis’s place, so when you get the chance, stop by and check him out. He’s also opening a restaurant downtown soon, so we want to see all of you at the grand opening.”

Making eye contact with Mr. Lewis, he mouthed, “Thank you,” to me, which I acknowledged with a head nod.

“Babe, come up here.” I shifted my attention to Aúrea, who was standing, holding our son. She passed him to my mother as she made her way to where I stood.

“Y’all give my woman a round of applause. She put all this shit together.” Everyone cheered for her, including me.

“All right. All right,” she spoke, waving off the applause. I loved seeing her smile and blush.

“Aúrea, since the day you came back into my life, I’ve been the happiest man alive. Then you gave me my son, and I didn’t think I could get any happier, but I can. I will, if you do one last thing for me.”

“Anything,” she breathed out. Everyone simultaneously said Ahh, making the two of us chuckle.

“From the day I first laid eyes on you, I knew I was meant to be yours, and you mine. Only thing left to do is make this official by giving you my last name.” I removed the small ring box from my pocket as I eased to my right knee.

“Aúrea Belle Shepard, will you continue adding to the joy you bring me every day as my wife?”

“Yes,” she shouted, leaping into my arms, making both of us fall back as she placed multiple kisses on my face, and all our friends and family applauded.

Life was good, and from here on out, it would only get better.

  The End
