What the actual fuck? He’d given up the job he’d married her to keep? She had no idea what her expression looked like, but he laughed at whatever he saw on her face.

“Don’t worry. The terms of my resignation included you keeping your job.” He chuckled and looked down for a second. “It seems that Haruto likes you more than he likes me. He refused to sell unless you stayed.”

Siobhan mumbled something around the plastic ball in her mouth. It was just as well it was there, though. She had no idea what she wanted to say. With a napkin, Jackson wiped away the drool trickling down her chin.

“What am I going to do with my time, you ask?” He petted her hair and settled his chin on her shoulder. “I can’t exactly leave my company with nothing, so I’ll continue to work as an advisor, as I mentioned. I’m going to learn to cook, and take care of Andy and our baby, but I’m definitely keeping the cleaning service. You’re going to go to work while I stay home with the kids and Pogo. How does that sound?”

He reached around her head and unbuckled the gag, wiping her mouth as he pulled it away. “I also sold the Mustang and bought a brand-new minivan with all the bells and whistles. What do you think about that?” he asked.

“If you’re trying to make a joke, it’s not very funny.” She tried to ease herself away, but failed when Jackson settled his arms more firmly around her waist. “I’m not seeing you play Suzy Homemaker, and I’m not sure why you think --”

“Because you’re more important to me than that stupid job. I was an idiot not to see that.” He set her down on the couch and got down on his knees between her thighs. Without a word, he pulled her wedding ring from his pocket.

She didn’t move as he slipped the ring on her finger. Her head must not be quite right yet. She was hallucinating in an alternate universe where Jackson had a conscience.

“I want you to be my wife for real. Not because either of us needs anything from the other, but because I love you. Because you’re the most spectacular woman I’ve ever met, and because I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

  “I --”

“I want us to have another wedding, but in a church with flowers, and you wearing a real wedding dress. And we’ll have a honeymoon.” Bending down, he kissed her belly, and added, “All four of us. You, me, Andy, and this little one, too. And I want us to formally adopt Andy.”

Siobhan looked down into his face. His expression was open and filled with an expression she’d never seen on him before. He looked… happy? Maybe it was peace. Was that what love looked like? Words were easy; they cost nothing but the breath it took to speak. “Do you mean what you said, Jackson?”

Taking her uninjured hand, he kissed her knuckles. “Every last word, baby girl. I want to be your husband for real, and I want to wake up to your beautiful face and your cranky attitude every morning for the rest of our lives.”

  “You sold the Mustang…”

He grinned and chuckled. “It was hard enough to get one car seat in that thing. I can’t even imagine trying to fit two in it. When the kids are grown and we’re empty nesters, maybe I’ll buy a two-seater, or put you on the back of my motorcycle and cruise with the other bikers and their old ladies.”

“Jesus. You have this all planned out.” She couldn’t believe he’d sold that car for a minivan. He could have mothballed it for when the kids were older; he had plenty of space to store it. And to replace it with a minivan? As a grand gesture went, it was astonishing. Romance book heroes bought islands and shit to please their women. Jackson bought a fucking minivan and she lost her heart.

“So what do you say, baby? Want to take a chance on an unemployed, arrogant bastard who will spend the rest of his life making you happy?”

“I think the word you’re looking for is cocky.” She smiled and took his hand, holding it against her cheek. “Jackson McKenna, you have yourself a deal.”
