Torill put her hand over his. “Would you mind very much if we go back, now? I’m tired.”
* * * * *
Paul carried her back to her quarters, despite her protests that she wasn’t so tired she couldn’t walk. There, she slept for hours, while he sat beside her and held her hand.
Torill woke just as the launch countdown had begun. She sat up with Paul’s help.
“Do you want to go down there?” Paul asked her softly, nodding at the screen.
Torill looked at the mass of people gathered in the big docking bay, cheering and waving, as Lucas tossed a bottle of champagne out across the void, to let it smash up against the side of the Endurance.
She shook her head. “I would rather stay here, if you don’t mind?”
Paul picked up her hand again. “I don’t mind.”
“You should go down there, though. You’ve done so much work.”
The Endurance was inching away from the support struts now. The cheering and screaming was deafening, even through the screen’s sound system.
Paul shook his head. “I’m staying right here with you.” His hand tightened on hers. “Where I should have been, all along.”
Warmth spread through her, chasing away the mortal chill. “You can’t stay here forever,” she pointed out. “I could last for a long time yet.”
“Watch me,” Paul murmured and kissed her.

About the Author
