Her Safe Haven

It felt like forever before the tears stopped, and she took several deep breaths to calm herself.
She would pack the things she’d need for a few days and come back and get the rest later.
She felt better with a plan in place and dragged herself off the floor. Lilah washed her face with cold water to take down the swelling and redness from crying.
She opened the door and gasped to see Kaden on the side of the bed, his head bowed, and his elbows on his knees.
Lilah thought he looked as dejected as she felt, she just hoped it was for the same reason but knew not to ask for a lot because she usually didn’t get it.
“I…I’ve not started.” She waited for him to say something. “I’m just going to pack a bag for right now so I can get out of your hair.”
Kaden’s head snapped up. “Don’t put this on me, baby.”
“Put what?”
“You, leaving.”
“But you don’t want me here.”
“I’ve never said that, and you leaving is the last thing that I want.”
Lilah stood dumbstruck in front of him.
“I don’t want to leave, Kaden. But I don’t want to take advantage of you.”
Kaden stood abruptly. “Are you fucking kidding me? Where in the hell did you get an idea like that?”
“It’s just that I moved in while we waited for Terry to be caught, and now that he is, I don’t need to be here.”
“I want you here for me,” he said and patted his chest. “Yes, I wanted to protect you, but that was not the only reason you were here.”
“Then, why?”
Kaden raked a hand through his hair.
“How many times do I have to tell you how much I care about you?”
Lilah’s mouth snapped shut.
“Just once would be good,” she said.
Kaden stared at her, confused. “What does that mean? I tell you every day.”
She shook her head. “No, you’ve never said you care about me. You’re very loving toward me, but it’s not the same as the words.”
“What words are you wanting, baby?”
“How about you love me? Or you cared deeply for me and wanted me in your life,” she yelled.
A small smile crossed his face as he grasped her shoulders.
“Lilah, I love you more than anything in my life. I want…no, I need you in my life every day. I need to be able to sleep with you every night. I need to be able to touch you whenever I want. Please don’t leave. Not ever.”
Lilah felt a ball of emotion clogged her throat, making it impossible to talk at first.
“You love me?”
Kaden grunted and looked at the ceiling.
“Jesus Christ. How can you not know that?”
“Do you think I love you?” she asked and waited. She saw him grow a bit uncomfortable.
“I would guess you do.”
Lilah snorted. “But you don’t know for sure because I’ve never said the words. Right?”
A scowl crossed his face the same time a smirk grew on hers.
“Fuck. Okay, I get it. Actions are important, but so are the words,” he said.
Lilah nodded. “Yes.”
Kaden cupped her face in his hands. “Lilah, I love you, baby. I love you more every single day and will die if I don’t have you in my life. I want to marry you and have children and build a life with you I’ve only dreamed of.”
Tears seeped and rolled down her cheeks. “I love you with my whole heart. I never want to leave. I’ve also dreamed of having a family with you. I want to be your everything.”
“You already are, sweetheart.”
Lilah lifted to her tiptoes as his head descended toward her. The one soft kiss quickly turned into a frantic need making them both tear off their clothes.
Kaden had her under him and was sliding into her, burying himself in the only place on earth he was truly at peace.
He made love to her, trying to show her with his whole being how much she meant to him. Words of love slipped from his mouth between the kissing.
The firestorm of emotions quickly pushed them both over the edge.
They lay together in silence as they both digested what had just happened.
He cuddled her against his chest and kissed her forehead. He tipped her head back with a finger under her chin.
“So, we agree. You’ll get rid of your house. Move in here and spend the rest of your life driving me crazy?”
Lilah giggled. “I like the way you said it. I would have just said we live happily ever after, but I can’t ignore how much fun it is to get you riled up.”
Kaden growled and pinned her beneath him. He poked his fingers into her armpits and smiled when she whooped out.
“Stop,” she shouted and laughed at the same time.
“Are you going to be a good girl?”
“Yes, yes, yes,” she cried.
He stopped his torment and looked down at her face.
“No, you’re not,” he said and smiled when she smirked. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Lilah smiled up at him and pulled his head down. It would never be boring, she thought. But they would have the love, and that was what was important.
