The Light of the Midnight Stars

To my Deborah Harris Agency family: Deborah Harris, George Eltman, Hadar Makov, Efrat Lev, Geula Geurts, Jessica Kasmer-Jacobs, Shira Ben-Choreen Schneck, Ran Keisar, Ilana Kurshan, Ines Austern—thank you for being there through every trial and tribulation.
To my grandmother, Nettie Bunder z”l, who lit the candles that sent me down the rabbit hole that became this book. We may never know exactly why you lit Shabbat candles in a closet, but I hope I told a story that will make you and our ancestors proud.
To my father, Miles Bunder, for always telling stories—some of which have become books. Like this one.
To my mother, Alida Bunder, for always listening to my stories and for reading Andrew Lang’s fairy tales to me as a child.
To both my parents for always believing in me. I would not be the writer I am today without you. Thank you for listening, for always being there for me and my family.
To Jonathan for supporting me through everything. You, more than anyone, know what a struggle this book was—but you never lost faith in me. You always listened to my stories and my tears. Even when I interrupted you multiple times a day while you were working to read you a passage from one text or another. Even when most of the childcare fell on you because I was too lost in a forest of words to find my way out. You were always waiting for me on the other side.
To my children: Nachliel, Avtalyon, Lehava, Shaanan, Nehorai (and Pablo) for living in my world and understanding that it is sometimes a strange place. I hope to always fill your lives with stories and good things to eat—even if the house isn’t always as clean as you might like it to be, and I’m not always as available as you wish I was. You are all the stars in my sky and you will shine one day long after I am gone. Tell my stories.
To my ancestors and the holy men and women who came before me (both known and unknown)—I hope I’ve done you proud. Any errors or omissions are my own.
