The Night He Died

He laughed, his throat hoarse and tight. “You’re out of a job.”

“I quit, but thanks for the reminder.”

“I might be able to help you out. Off the record.”

  “In cash?”

“I’m not saying it will be enough to live on. It’ll be a need-based kind of thing.”

  “What’s the catch?”

“No catch,” he said. “I really want to make this thing with the LBI work, and I need all the help I can get. You’re local, you’re ruthless, and you can read people like no one I’ve ever seen.”

  “Like a paid informant?”

  “Basically. But with no strings.”

“How does that work in court cases?”

“We have informants all the time. They’re protected.”

Lyric looked him up and down, her face carefully blank, and then pushed the elevator button. “I’ll think about it.”

She stepped onto the elevator and leaned against the back wall. “But only if you go to counseling for that PTSD.” She waved as the doors shut.

  Quid pro quo.

He should have known it wouldn’t be that easy.

  Acknowledgments

As always, a special thank you to my husband Rob and daughter Grace for their unwavering support. Thank you to Alexandra Weis for answering my never-ending questions. To Kristine Kelly, my friend and editor, thank you for all you’ve done. John Kelly, thanks for the chocolate. To Jan Barton, thank you for making me your surrogate daughter during the toughest years of my life.

Special thank you to psychic Cari Roy for taking the time to speak with me about her abilities—and for the amazing reading. Thanks to all of the servers and locals I bombarded with my questions last spring. Incredible thanks to Save our Cemeteries for the informative tour of St. Louis #1. And to Italia Gandolfo, my agent: thanks for your faith in me and never being afraid to tell me what you think.

New Orleans changed my life in the best possible way. I fell in love with the city after reading Interview with the Vampire in high school and spent the next two decades romanticizing its mystique and beauty. When my husband and I finally visited in 2018, I fully expected to be let down. I’d built the place up so much it couldn’t possibly live up to my expectations. But it did, and then exceeded them.

During an evening walk down Dumaine Street, my husband pointed out a wooden sign for yet another voodoo store. Unlike many of the others, Conjure New Orleans is so subtle I likely wouldn’t have noticed. For some reason, he felt like I should go inside and check it out.

A woman tucked into the corner with a tiny table offered to do a tarot card reading for me. I hadn’t had any readings yet, so I took her up on the offer. Thirty minutes later, I left Conjure New Orleans with trembling fingers and a shaky stomach. Some of the cards were eerily accurate and specific to my trip and infatuation with the city. After months of uncertainty about setting Cage’s new series in New Orleans, I knew without a doubt that I’d made the right decision. La Nouvelle-Orléans, thank you.

To my readers, thank you so much for staying with me. I hope you enjoyed The Night He Died, and there is more Cage Foster in the future!
