Ren seems just as shaken as I am, his face unnaturally pale beneath his red beard. His hands tremble where they rest on the steering wheel. Lips compressed in a grim line, he pulls the car over to the side of the road and puts it into park. Then, he turns to face me completely, eyes wild in his ruggedly handsome face.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” He reaches forward as if he wants to touch me before tightening his hands into fists. His eyes sweep over my body, assessing me for injuries. Only when he seems satisfied that I’m relatively unharmed does he release a breath I haven’t realized he’s been holding.
“I’m fine,” I whisper, grateful when my voice doesn’t shake. “Just a little…”
Terrified? Anxious? Horrified that I dragged you into this? Wet in the pants from the piss that was just released? Pick your poison.
“I’m so fucking sorry,” Ren whispers hoarsely, eyes downcast. His words have me straightening in my seat.
“Sorry? Why are you sorry?”
Only then does he raise his head to meet my eyes. His are swarming with emotions—emotions that I couldn’t possibly begin to name. Guilt appears to be the most prominent, darkening the emerald green until they’re the color of a darkness-shrouded forest surrounding us.
“Because I believe they were coming after me.”
