In the Blasted Lands, hills were split by gaping fissures. Fumaroles bubbled and steamed, and the air was heavy with the stench of a-sorcerous decay. Foul vapors drifted in noxious clouds along the ground; they left a feel of dampness and filth on the skin.

A slavering roar spun Conan around, an involuntary “Crom!” wrenched from his lips.

Facing him was a creature twice the height of a man, its gangrenous flesh dripping phosphorescent slime. A single rubiate eye set in the middle of its head watched him with a horrifying glimmer of intelligence. Its fanged maw gaped; its curving needle claws were raised.

Fangs bared in a snarl, the foul creature dashed to meet him.

“Robert Jordan (is) one of the few writers to successfully capture much of the spirit of Howard’s original character.”
