The only question was, how would the detective handle another serving of humble pie?

“I take it you’ll be releasing Patrick Potter soon,” Daisy said.

“As soon as I get back to the station,” Detective Crumple sighed.

“Good. It looks like you have some serious apologizing to do.”

Detective Crumple looked like he’d swallowed sour grapes. “You just couldn’t resist rubbing it in, could you?”

“I meant you have apologizing to do with Patrick. Now that you mention it though, I really did save your bacon on this one.”

Detective Crumple looked out wistfully. “Bacon is so much yummier than crow. Unfortunately, it looks like I have plenty of crow to eat today.”

“Is that the closest thing to an apology I’m going to get?” Daisy asked.

Detective Crumple remained stubbornly evasive. “To be fair, I had hard evidence. You can’t really blame me for thinking Patrick was the killer.”

“I just want to point out that is probably the worst apology I’ve ever heard.”

Finally, Detective Crumple sighed and ate crow. “Look, I’m sorry. You proved me wrong--again.”

“See. That wasn’t that hard, was it?” Daisy asked.

Detective Crumple muttered under his breath. “Speak for yourself.”

“I guess it would be too much to ask to get a full on compliment from you then?”

“Jeez. I don’t even let my dentist pull my teeth that much,” Detective Crumple admitted.

“You know, this conversation doesn’t have to be as painful as a root canal,” Daisy insisted.

“You’re right. I’m going to grab a few jelly donuts and pretend I didn’t get out-sleuthed by an interior decorator.”

“No. I meant you could start looking at me as a friend, rather than a nemesis,” Daisy suggested.

Detective Crumple’s pride kept him from agreeing right away. As much as he hated to admit it, his detective work never lived up to his ego. Was he finally willing to admit that?

“What do you say we bury the hatchet and work together from now on?” Daisy continued.

Detective Crumple grimaced, then thought it over. Finally, he shook Daisy’s hand.

  “Deal,” Detective Crumple said.

“Good. You can’t go wrong with a little women’s intuition on your side,” Daisy replied.

“You sound like my ex-wife,” Detective Crumple said.

“Rule number one of this friendship—do not compare me to your ex-wife,” Daisy declared.

Detective Crumple quickly backtracked. “Why don’t I get you a cruller?”

  “Now you’re talking,” Daisy said.

“If there’s one thing I know about life, it’s that donuts make everything better.”

  Chapter Twenty-Three

Daisy grabbed that donut for the road. As much as Detective Crumple liked to believe donuts were the height of culinary achievement, Daisy knew better. Besides, once she wrapped a case up, there was no better place to celebrate than at Sweet Tooth.

Both Samantha and Granny Annie were waiting with congratulatory pastries that put Detective Crumple’s donut to shame. Unfortunately, Daisy couldn’t afford to overindulge today, even on Samantha and Granny Annie’s sweets.

Daisy wanted to be sure to leave some room in her stomach. Gavin would be taking her to Rizzuto’s Ristorante for dinner in just a few hours. The way she saw it, she only had room for a small little treat now.

There was more on Daisy’s plate than just dessert however. Things were really starting to look up for her. It was a far cry from the emotional funk she was in just a day ago. She was glad that seemed to be nothing more than a speed bump in the rearview mirror now. Samantha and Granny Annie seemed just as excited as she was.

“The super sleuth saves the day again,” Samantha said.

“Let’s hope for the last time. There’s only so much detective drama this decorator can take,” Daisy admitted.

“I guess you won’t be putting a down payment on one of those Majestic Estates anytime soon then?” Granny Annie asked.

“Not a chance. They were neither majestic nor estates before the murder. Now those homes are about as attractive as living next to a fraternity house,” Daisy joked.

“I’m sorry you’re stuck renting. Have yourself a cupcake though. You’ve sure earned it,” Samantha said.

“I’m actually going to save this for dessert tonight. I don’t want to spoil my appetite for dinner. Gavin is taking me to Rizzuto’s Ristorante tonight,” Daisy revealed.

“Look at you, living it up these days,” Samantha said.

“Maybe I’ll see you and Gavin on the dance floor sometime. Life is only as good as your last salsa dance,” Granny Annie boasted.

“I’ll keep that in mind. Life is awfully good these days though. I almost feel like I’m in a real life romantic comedy,” Daisy admitted.

“I guess that would make me one of the wise-cracking best friends then. Oh what I’d give for my own spin off called ‘Granny’s Guide To The Good Life.’”

  Samantha and Daisy both laughed.

“Well, I can’t complain about how things are turning out for me. Speaking of, I should get home and change for my date,” Daisy said.

“Hey, don’t forget your cupcake,” Samantha insisted.

“See, that’s how smitten I am. It takes a special man to make me forget about cupcakes,” Daisy joked.

  The End.
