  Chapter 28

Poe shot up in bed, her fluffy familiar sleeping soundly on the pillow next to her. Even from her Bourbon Street hotel room thirteen hundred miles away, she could feel Grace’s magic being set free. There was no way the others didn’t feel it, too.

She hopped out of bed and threw on a pair of jeans. She tossed the rest of her belongings in her backpack, not bothering to change her shirt from the one she’d been sleeping in, and looked up flights on her phone. She booked the soonest one and slipped her boots on, tying them as fast as she could. What am I doing? she thought. Grace’s magic being released meant one of three things: Wendy needed it for a powerful spell and took it into herself, which was best-case scenario, Wendy activated it to protect herself from someone or something she couldn’t handle on her own, or Julia somehow got her hands on it, killed Wendy, and used her blood to take the magic for herself. If Wendy was in trouble, there wasn’t much she could do to help. She wasn’t nearly as strong as a born-Tituban witch and she’d barely made it out of town alive last time she stood against Julia and her minions. Still, she had an obligation to try. Wendy only had Grace’s magic because she brought it to her. It had been her mentor’s dying wish, to see her family’s magic passed to someone with Tituban blood. After she’d crossed over and her power was securely in the amulet, it acted as a compass, leading Poe directly to Wendy. She could have hidden it, sealed it away, and dropped it in the ocean. It’s what she thought she should do. But, Grace was like a mother to her, and not honoring her wishes wasn’t an option. Still, her stomach twisted with guilt as she smoothed the covers, leaving the room looking as nice as when she’d arrived.

“Come on, Raven,” she said, patting the bed and holding open the pack. The bunny woke up and hopped over, climbing into the bag. “We’re going home.”

Julia looked up at the Tribeca apartment building, a shiver running down her spine as the remnants of magic emanating from four stories above lingered, dancing on the air like fireflies in the dark of the early morning. She couldn’t tell who had activated Grace’s magic, but whether it be Poe, an elder witch, or a stranger, there was one thing she was sure of: they wouldn’t have it for long.

In the near distance, she heard the incessant cawing of a crow. She held out her arm as the bird swooped down and perched itself there, its weight a familiar comfort. “We’ve found it, Griffin,” she told the animal. “Soon, Grace’s magic will belong to us, as it was always meant to.”
