Tainted
Page 12
The main road through town is cracked and littered with deep potholes. Spray-painted words scrawl across doorways and the sides of houses—written in angry red letters, like dripping blood. It takes some time before Chris can sound out the words. If there was one thing he could thank Remy for, it was the lessons on letters and how to read. Of course, the lessons were short-lived, but he grasped enough from her to make it.
He can read most of the street signs—at least, those that remain. He approaches one of the tiny houses and examines the lettering. His mouth silently sounds out the words and within a minute, he understands.
BEWARE, LIVING CORPSES INSIDE
Not all the warnings are the same. In fact, some of them do not appear to indicate danger at all. The words on the next house say:
ALL CLEAR – NO FOOD OR SUPPLIES
Chris walks on, machete in hand, hanging by his side, ready to turn and strike at the first sign of the Tainted. Glass breaks to his right and he spins toward the sound. One of the dead stands in the window of a yellow house, arms stretched out toward him through the window. Chris cringes at the sight of broken glass, still embedded in the windowpane, like silvery teeth gnawing into the Tainted’s moist, gray flesh. Lines of meat slice away from its arms and plop heavily onto the porch. The crossbars on the window seem sufficient to keep the corpse inside, so Chris walks on.
He doesn’t care about the houses. What he wants is the place where all the businesses are located—then maybe he’ll find supplies that can help him survive the coming days, months, and years. His experience with Remy has taught him several things about himself. The first and most important is that he should never trust anyone. It’s survival of the fittest in this world and sometimes, the living are more dangerous than the dead.
The other thing he's learned (and this one surprises him) is that despite the way Remy treated him, he knows that he does not want to be alone any more. To be alone is to die from within—it just takes a long, long time—and if that’s the case, he’d rather become one of the Tainted.
Chris has a long road ahead of him, and it begins with this step… and the next… and another…
