A Family For Christmas (Hearts In Georgia; Harmony Cove)

“Oh… Well, whether or not Aaron is going to stay for dinner with us,” Lysander replied, getting to his feet and walking over to her. He couldn’t see Aaron out in the hall. Was it too much to hope for that he’d left? That she’d said no? He couldn’t get a clear glimpse of Grace’s hand.

There was a beep from in the kitchen.

“That must be the timer for the bread,” said Jan, rising to her feet. “Excuse me while I go fetch that. Charlie, could you go grab the punch bowl from the fridge out in the garage?”

“Sure, sweetie,” Charlie said, following after her. They both looked skeptically at Lysander and Grace but ducked out of the room.

“Grace, I’m really sorry about before,” Lysander began. “If I’ve made you at all uncomfortable, I can take the kids and we can leave so you and your family can celebrate your engagement.”

“What are you talking about?” Grace asked. “I sent Aaron home. I said no to him.”

Lysander blinked at her a few times. “You… said no?”

She rolled her eyes. “Of course I did. After everything he did to me, there was no way that I’d be able to marry him.”

“R-really?” Lysander asked. It was as if his heart was playing a song in reverse, and each second knit his heart back together.

“And not only that, but I told him that I couldn’t possibly marry him when I was already in a relationship with someone else,” Grace said, smiling up at Lysander.

He wasn’t sure his heart could handle this. It was close to bursting. “You mean—”

“With you, silly,” she confirmed, giving him a playful nudge with her elbow. “I meant you, Lysander. Ever since I met you, my whole life has changed. I’m happier, more like myself, and better off than I’d ever been with Aaron. I knew I needed to end my relationship with him a long time ago, but meeting you gave me the strength to realize that I really was done with him, and that someone much better was waiting for me.”

Lysander grinned at her. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “So… you and I…”

“I hope we can pick up where we left off,” she said. “This is probably the best thing that fate has brought my way. And Lysander…?”

“Yeah?” he asked, his breath catching in his chest.

“I…” Grace blushed. “I think I’m falling in love with you, too.”

“Daddy, look!” exclaimed George, who was pointing above Lysander’s head.

“Mistletoe!” Lily said, clapping her hands. “That means you have to kiss her, Daddy!”

Lysander turned to look into Grace’s big, blue eyes, and he swore that he could have floated off into space. He wasn’t sure he’d ever been so happy in his whole life.

  “May I?” he asked.

She grinned at him, threw her arms around his neck, and pulled him down to her.

He kissed her, and fireworks exploded inside his mind.

This was the best Christmas he’d ever had.
