Minutes later, the two of us are alone in our room, making love eye-to-eye with me seated on Garrett’s lap. It’s so unlike him to say nothing for this long.
When we finish, we remain wrapped around each other, the way we like it: unwilling to let go just yet.
“I didn’t have any words to thank you, so I wanted to show you how happy you made me, sweetheart. I love you.”
“I love you too, and I’m so happy there’s going to be more versions of you in the word, Garrett.”
My husband wrenches my body close and begins kissing me with that slow, ardent passion that’s become so familiar to me.
I begin to wonder if he’s ready for another round so quickly, but then he says, “We’re gonna need a new planner for the baby’s room.”
I laugh, slide off his lap, and crawl to the bedside table. Opening a drawer, I pull out a notebook and hand it to him. When he opens it, it reveals pages and pages of notes, color swatches, themes, quotes, and journal entries.
“I started it as soon as we agreed to go off the pill. And now I’m sharing it with you. You can use it to keep track of any ideas for the nursery, or even thoughts you want to share with our baby.”
Garrett runs his fingers over the pages and then takes the pen I hand him. I watch as he scrawls something out on an empty page and hands it back to me.
I look at the words he’s written, and it says, “Dear Baby: get ready to be loved by a Little woman and a Strong man. We will always have room for you in our home, no matter what happens. And don’t ever think about saying no to your Great Grams’ generosity.”
