“Okay. Well, thank you for carrying the message.”
She nods and runs off.

Certain planets, due to widespread negative energy, are no longer deemed suitable human habitats.
Besides widescale monster infestation, there are several other qualities of an abandoned planet.
Human society on this planet is driven by fear (fear of going to hell, fear of monsters, fear of breaking rules, fear of poverty, or just generalized free-floating anxiety)
Harsh child-rearing methods
Hatred of those who are different
Misogyny is a widely accepted part of their culture
Before the Great Leap, Old Earth was safe for human habitation. However, after 90% of the world’s population—that is, everyone who had accepted the Gift Economy—left for the new galaxies over the course of a century, the remainder formed small societies that fit perfectly into the Samantha Criteria. During the () war, the monsters used Old Earth as a base; due to the high concentration of negative energy, it is still one of their favorite habitats.
However, the Founders changed this. When they received a vision of a young Magical Girl living a difficult life on Old Earth, they defied all the rules and went to rescue her. Now, every three years, the Academy sends a team of its top operatives to Old Earth to rescue young people with magical powers.
When you look up from your book, you notice Magda sitting nearby, reading quietly. Clothbound, antique-looking hardcovers are piled by her feet. When she realizes that you’re looking at her, she glances up and smiles at you.
There’s something very nice and relaxing about reading with a friend.

You read a novel about two actors who fall in love while playing bitter enemies on a TV show. On-camera, they despise each other; off-camera, they’re constantly making each other laugh. And even when their careers separate them, the universe somehow manages to throw them together.
Come to think of it, reading about how happy they are together helps you figure out what you want from your next long-term relationship.

You read about magical girls who’ve had your powers: healing, manipulation of magical light, forming swords, forming magical armor and shields of light, altering your appearance slightly, the ability to play any instrument…
The more you read, the more you realize how unique and incredible you are. You have limitless potential to do anything you want to. Although you’ll probably end up specializing in the powers that appeal to you the most and developing the others as needed, it’s super-cool to know that you can be whatever you want to be.

It’s nice out, so you decide to grab a favorite book from the library and head outside to a concealed reading nook that Magda told you about over muffins and tea that morning.
The sun is bright, the grass is a sparkling dewy green, and everything makes you smile.
And that’s when you see Chant, a sun hat shading her pale, freckled face, her expression one of peaceful concentration as she weeds a flowerbed. There’s a soft blush to her cheeks; illuminated by noonlight, her hair is as red as the sunset.
She’s happy to see you. “Work always seems easier when you have friends around, I think,” she remarks after you greet each other.
You end up sitting under the shade of a tall tree, reading quietly and chatting with the hard-working Chant; when you finish your book, you help her with the gardening. Her subtle wit and seemingly unending capacity for kindness make the day pass quickly. Before you know it, it’s time to go inside for dinner.

The kitchen is mostly empty at this time of day, except for a group of older girls who have cooking duty and a teacher who’s teaching some of the littlest girls how to make muffins. Abby’s at one of the sleek counters, piping pastel icing onto tiny pastries.
When she realizes you’re there, she’s startled, but happy. “Oh! I’m making petit fours. Glad you’re here—you can help me.”
Your flowers and polka-dots aren’t quite as perfect as Abby’s, but she assures you that you’ll improve with experience! And you have so much fun snacking, chatting, and laughing with Abby that how the cakes turn out doesn’t really matter. After all, wh
at’s most important is that you have fun!

“The thing is… she’s unresponsive to any stimuli, and even our most powerful antidotes don’t improve her condition. We think she’s in a coma. Analysis of her brain patterns and vital signs suggest a fear response. Something scared her, and… she may not wake up until she’s ready to do so.”

The most recent name, Kione Macavity, is written in dark purple ink. The tall, straight letters almost seem to glare at you. Whoever signed their name like this must be a very serious person…
You add your name to the list, find a comfortable chair, and sit down to read.

One of your strategies, whenever something makes you unhappy, is to make a list of all the things that you’re grateful for. You sit down at your desk, find a cute notepad, and start writing.
Friends who care about me.
My family.
My room.
Clothing.
Two legs and two arms.
Tons of talent
A really cute face
A future that’s full of possibilities
The ability to know how to write these words
Morning glory flowers to put in my hair
Cute food
The fact that someone invented sequins…
By the time you’ve made a long list, you feel a bit better. And even though something terrible just happened to one of your best friends, you can remember that life is still worth living.
Besides, she’d want you to be happy!

You spend a long time sitting with Abby. Sometimes she opens her mouth and makes noises that are almost words.
She doesn’t seem to know you’re there, though.
