Blood Trance

I hadn't ever seen Maddy cry so hard or for so long, and in the days following Loretta's death my sister plunged into a sea of despair that she still hasn't shaken. Once again I suggested a trip, to which Maddy snapped, “Where, Chicago?” So, needless to say, we still haven't gone anywhere. I'm still working on it, though. Chicago, doubtful. New York, perhaps. Or maybe somewhere totally different, like Russia. Somewhere like St. Petersburg.

I don't know. Loretta and her tragedy are a hard one. I'd been raised on heroes like the Lone Ranger and Zorro and the fundamental belief that goodness always prevails. Nothing in my adult life, however, had ever been so clear-cut, so black-and-white, and over the past few years I'd also come to question which is more powerful, fate or willpower. I haven't reached a conclusion on that, but I've only recently learned that no matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can't fix, some things like Loretta and her life.
