“Good,” I rubbed a hand up and down her back. “Because it’s gonna be a while before I let you out of my sight again.”
“Can an old man get a hug around here?” Chuck laughed. Brandy’s head snapped up so quick I would have thought she had whiplash.
“Dad? You came all the way here to find me?” She looked confused but moved toward him.
“Of course, I did. Honestly, I can’t believe you’re surprised. I’ll always find you.” He shook his head sadly wrapping her in his arms.
“He led the police here after I got knocked out.” I was still pissed about the cheap shot.
“Miss? We need to get you to the hospital to get checked out.” A paramedic with a kind smile walked up beside us.
“I don’t…”
Chuck cut her off. “You’re going to the hospital.” He led her over to the waiting ambulance and watched as she was strapped down. “You’re going with her.” He motioned for me to get in and the EMT nodded in agreement. I would have figured Chuck would have wanted to go but was grateful to the man for seeing the need I had to be with her. He smiled clapping me on the shoulder as I jumped inside and grabbed her hand.
“It’s okay, babe. As soon as a doctor clears you, we’ll go home,” I reassured her with a squeeze of my hand.
“Where’s Coco?” It kind of seemed like a random question to me, but I smiled at her.
“She’s at the house, probably snuggled up next to Sapphire sleeping away.” She blew out a breath smiling at me.
“I love you,” she sighed and I don’t think I had ever been happier in my whole damn life.
“So, that text breaking up with me, wasn’t you?” I kissed her knuckles.
“What text? Never mind. I’m so sorry I left the way I did and what I said.” I thought she was about to cry. I reached a hand up to her cheek and softly held it. Her nose had already turned black along with her eyes. I almost wish the guy weren’t dead, so I could kill him myself for what he did to her.
“Shhh, it’s over. You don’t need to say anything. I know you were scared.”
“The funny thing is that I hadn’t even been that scared. I know what true terror is now and when I thought he’d done something to you like he did to my mother, there is no fear that could ever compare to how devastated I was when I thought you were gone.”
“I’m not going anywhere, babe. Never again.” Her words registered a second later. “Wait, what about your mother?”
“He said he killed her… for me.” She shook her head almost looking exasperated by the thought. “He was a serious psychopath. I can’t believe he was so good at hiding it.”
“They say that the actual psychopaths are super charming and friendly. It’s how they lure their victims in.” I couldn’t even fathom how someone turned out that way. It was just wrong.
We were silent the rest of the way to the hospital. The paramedic gave me something to wipe the blood and grime from her body. I was careful not to touch her nose but when I got to her throat, I swallowed hard. There were angry red fingerprints on her throat that made me growl. I hated that he touched her.

Brandy’s nose was broken but the doctor didn’t see a need for reconstruction. It was a clean break, so he expected it to heal nicely. It was only an hour or two before we were able to leave the hospital thankfully. We were both exhausted. I hadn’t slept in what felt like days and Brandy had been given pain medication that made her tired. I was relieved when Chuck showed up to give us a ride home.
“You can stay in the guest bedroom,” I told him as I unlocked the door carefully. Brandy was asleep in my arms and maneuvering was a little difficult but I managed it without waking her.
“I wouldn’t want to impose.” I shook my head.
“You saved both our lives today. There’s no such thing as imposing. C’mon.” I motioned him inside and pointed to the first-floor bedroom. “I need to get her to bed. Have a good night.”
“You too, Pete.”
Chapter Forty-Two
Brandy
Three weeks was a long time to have nightmares, but I knew they would lessen over time. I was in the kitchen attempting (and probably failing) to make a nice dinner for Pete. He was training harder than ever and I wanted to do something nice for him.
I cut up veggies to toss in the salad and checked on the chicken baking in the oven. I wasn’t lying when I said I had minimal cooking skills but I’d been watching videos and looking at recipes since I had a ton of free time.
A pair of arms wrapped around me from behind and I couldn’t help the flinch. “It’s okay, babe. It’s just me.” Pete kissed the side of my neck. “What are you doing?”
“Making dinner,” I giggled. The light scruff of his five o’clock shadow tickled my neck.
“You look sexy as fuck in the kitchen cutting up vegetables.” His arms tightened around me, and I was engulfed in him. The smell of rain and sweat and man. It was intoxicating. I put down the knife and turned in his arms, so he could greet me properly. His lips crashed down on mine and I felt the muscles bunch in his back. “Need you,” he mumbled into the kiss.
“What? I’m cooking.” We still hadn’t had sex not for my lack of trying, but he was insistent that we do it the right way and since my nose had been broken, he didn’t want us to have the memory of Billy and what he did mess with a treasured one of our own. It was sweet but it had still been annoying.
“I don’t want dinner right now, I’m hungry for you.” He picked me up and I wrapped my legs around his waist.
“Wait. We should turn the oven off first.” I giggled at the impatient noise he made in the back of his throat. “Do you want to burn the house down?” That seemed to get his attention, and he carried me over to the oven and stabbed at the off button with one finger until it beeped.
“Better?” he asked between open-mouthed kisses to my neck and collarbone.
“Yes, much,” I moaned tilting my head back to give him better access. I was squirming in his hold and it only caused him to move faster. “Bed, now.”
“Yes ma’am,” he agreed taking the stairs two at a time and laying me gently on the bed. Pete looked around the room in shocked silence. “Were you planning on seducing me?” His grin lit up his whole face. The room was lit in a soft glow from a few tea light candles scattered around.
“Yes, and you ruined the surprise.” I pouted.
“Awww, babe, I’m sorry.” He kissed me sweetly on the lips before moving lower. I had on a red wrap dress that was only held in place by one tie. He made quick work of that but when he looked down at me, he groaned into my shoulder. “That is the hottest thing I’ve ever seen.” The matching white lace and panty set had little bows on them, and I was wearing fishnet stockings held up only by a garter. Pete was drinking in every bit of my skin.
“Make love to me, Pete,” I said breathless.
“Are you sure?” he asked with a scrunched brow. He thought I was made of glass that I was going to break but after everything I’d been through, I was stronger than he thought.
“Is that one of your questions?” I asked smiling up at him.
“No, I only have one left and I’m saving it.” He grinned.
“Then shut up and kiss me.” I barely got the words out before his lips crashed back down to mine. His hand slid up my thigh as he undid the garter and began to peel the panties and stockings off me slowly. He broke the kiss and watched as he exposed me to his greedy eyes. I felt my skin pebble at the cool air in the room but Pete just took me in. He moved next to the bra and slid each strap down slowly. His lips met each shoulder and traveled lower until he wrapped them around one stiff peek sucking it into his mouth. My back arched off the bed at the sensation.
He moved from the bed and stripped his clothes off in record time. I drank the sight of him in licking my lips at the sight of his gorgeous body. He crawled up the bed and fished in the nightstand for something. I realized quickly what it was and trailed a finger down his arm.
“I’m on the pill.” Pete sucked in a sharp breath and looked to me with wide eyes.
“Really?” his look of excitement was fucking adorable.
“I trust you,” I said and meant it with my whole heart. There was no one I trusted more in the entire world. He was leaning over me propped up on his elbows before I could blink.
“I love you so fucking much.” His lips were on me again. His pace was frenzied as he made his way down my body and grabbed one leg behind the knee holding it up, so he could see all of me. He groaned at what he saw there. I knew I was drenched. My breathing was coming out in soft pants. He leaned down inhaling deeply before I felt a finger plunge inside and a tongue slide over my clit. My head thrashed back and forth in time with the assault. God, it felt so good. He added a finger most likely an attempt to stretch me and I crashed over the edge in wave after wave of the best orgasm. Pete wasn’t anywhere near done with me yet. He lined himself up to my entrance sliding his cock up and down my slit. When it touched the sensitive nerves there my head swam again and my back arched.
“This is gonna hurt, babe. I’ll try to be gentle.” He kissed me sweetly before sliding himself in one inch at a time. God, it felt so good. I was full, and he hadn’t even gone halfway yet. I rocked my hips for him to move, and he complied in short shallow thrusts. He was prolonging it because he didn’t want to hurt me, I knew what he was doing, so I bucked my hips hard and instantly regretted it. Clenching my teeth together, I tried to breathe through the pain of being ripped apart. Pete stilled himself as he waited for me to be okay. His murmured words of comfort and sweet kisses helped and the pain finally eased to a dull ache.
“You can move now.” He started to get off the bed and I panicked grabbing onto his arm. “Where are you going?”
“I thought…” I laughed then.
“Get back here.” I squeezed him between my legs and tried to get him to move again. It was easier this time and didn’t hurt. I felt the next orgasm build slowly as his whispered words of encouragement and soft touches worked in time with his slow thrusts. His lips came down on my nipple.
“Oh my God. It feels so good,” I moaned. Pete picked up his pace at my words and my back arched and I screamed his name. Pete shouted a second after me as his body stilled and I could feel his release inside me. Pete dropped on top of me and rolled to the side pulling me into his arms.
“Are you okay?” he nuzzled my neck. “I didn’t hurt you?”
“It was perfect.” I grinned snuggling close to him and falling into my first nightmare-free sleep in a long, long time.
Epilogue
Pete
Three months later…
I was nervous. It wasn’t about the decision on the fight I was still awaiting from the judges. It had been a good solid fight but I just hadn’t been able to knock him out or get him to tap. No, the ball of nervous energy was about a certain girl who was waiting for me ringside.
The last three months had been amazing. She got her practice back once we explained the reason behind everything that’d happened, and we fucked like rabbits every spare minute of the day. I couldn’t get enough of my girl.
All our friends and family were ringside as we waited. “And the winner is…Pete the Gator Collins!” The announcer yelled and I raised a fist in the air. Brandy came rushing into the cage with the rest of our family and friends. She jumped into my arms and I spun her around kissing her.
“Can I ask you a question?” I whispered close to her lips.
“I thought you were saving your last question.” Her eyes glittered at me and I wondered briefly if she guessed what my question was. Setting her back on her feet. I slowly bent down on both knees.
“We’ve been through some crazy times. Reindeer costume mishaps and media circuses, but one thing I know is I would do it all again to be right here right now with you looking at me like that.” I got choked up on the last words. Clearing my throat, I reached out for the box Kyle was holding out to me. “The best time of my life has been these last months with you. Will you do me the honor of being my wife?”
Brandy gasped when she saw the sapphire ring sitting in the little blue box. Her eyes glittered with tears as she nodded. I hadn’t noticed before the tear-drop sapphire earrings in her ears. The sight made me grin. She always said she had nowhere to wear them to, so she hadn’t worn them yet, but the fact that she picked that night to wear them made me feel lighter than I ever had before.
“They can’t hear your head rattle.” Delia laughed as she waited somewhat impatiently for a verbal confirmation.
“Yes, yes, yes. I would love nothing more than to be with you forever.” Her smile was bright as I placed the ring on her finger and swept her back up into my arms. This wasn’t the end; it was only the beginning.
