"I was never submissive. Just because you can’t see something doesn’t mean it’s exactly how it seems. Nothing really is," she grunted.

"That’s true, but you are submissive sometimes," he sneered at her then laughed adding fuel to her increasing wrath.

  "I am not," she snapped.

Flavio glared at her. "You are extremely naïve, aren’t you?" Their conversation got heated quickly and out of nowhere. Before Inéz could answer back, he sighed and shook his head. "Don’t you see? You and Noah shouldn’t have ever happened in the first place. It might seem thrilling and exciting, but it’s beginning to look like a toxic relationship, Inéz. You are doing everything he wants and it goes beyond the kind of duty owed to a Capo. You’re a woman so he doesn’t really know how to treat you - as one of his soldiers, or as a woman. He gave you this task that you’re nowhere near prepared for, threw you into the deepest pool, without teaching you how to swim first. And you actually think that is the way it should be, right? That you should take what you can get."

She didn’t know what to answer, because never before had she perceived her relationship with Noah that way. Yes, she had strong feelings for him and was also part of the Famiglia. But neither of those things seemed to directly clash with each other. At least that was what she had believed. But Flavio was the outside observer, an extremely intelligent one, too, so maybe he could see more than she did.

  What was so toxic?

She didn’t find the courage to ask out loud. However, Flavio must have seen the questions in her confused eyes.

"For what we love, we protect, right? He wants to do that but he will always put the Famiglia first and you will become a victim of that commitment. You are too dedicated to the cause that you won’t finish yourself. You have feelings for him, and that’s why you’re still holding onto the task. I told Nicodemo to get you out of the club the last time when he called me to say that you went into the room with Gastone. And you still stayed," he remarked.

Something flashed beneath the surface of his hardened expression. Concern. But Flavio masked it quickly, unwilling to open up to someone. He loved his brother, but he couldn’t talk him out of an idea that was set in his head.

And since Inéz didn’t want to talk about any of it anymore, they kept quiet.

  CHAPTER 40

Pushing from the counter she stood in front of Noah, looking up at him intensively. She wanted to voice her concerns about their relationship because his brother’s suspicions were not coming from nowhere, and she was feeling more and more confident that he was right. But as she met Noah’s grey eyes once again, every single sorrow left her mind. She reached out her hand and traced his lip lightly with the tip of her finger. It pouted slightly, and she suddenly felt the urge to kiss it. His lip felt chapped under her feather touch; yet, she simply couldn’t bring herself to give a fuck. She focused on them to keep herself from looking up. Because if she did, she might have found herself at the mercy of his questioning eyes wanting to know what she was doing. And she wasn’t at liberty to answer because she honestly had no clue.

His breathing grew deeper, its warmth touching her face. It dawned on her that her fixation on his lip was nothing more than her attempt of trying not to think of her more extreme feelings towards the man. Because it was painful to admit the toxicity that Flavio had been talking about. It was torture knowing that this shouldn’t go further and that she had to make Noah see it, too. Be the responsible one. He helped her accept her true nature, but at the same time left her with almost no free will to escape it all. Could all of this have even been stopped before? Could she have warned herself against this situation, and sheltered herself from the pain? And even if so, would she have listened to reason? Or would his arguments have caused her to think otherwise? Because he wouldn’t be persuaded easily, and even his brother was aware of that. That was why he had expressed his concerns to Inéz, rather than to Noah.

But the Capo didn’t let her overthink much longer and lowered his mouth to hers, kissing her softly at first. Inéz, ever responsive, moaned quietly against his lips.

Sliding his hand down her body, he was suddenly very aware of the fact that she was wearing an oversized t-shirt, with nothing underneath but a thin pair of panties. Without wasting time, he brushed the clothes out of his way, leaving her naked in the middle of the kitchen. He grabbed her ass cheeks and squeezed them, pulling her up, so she could wrap her legs around his waist. And that’s exactly what she did.

He pressed her against the kitchen island, and without stopping the kiss, threw everything from the counter to the ground, causing a deafening noise. They didn’t care. Next, Noah sat her down on it and discarded his pants and briefs with a quick move. His hand found his cock and he started stroking it slowly, brushing against her thighs with each movement. Inéz’s eyes moved down to watch his movements. She bit her lower lip, feeling his increased arousal. Immediately her palms rested upon his, taking over.

Noah smirked, his fingers founding their way to her clit and started massaging it. With a loud gasp, she rocked against his touch while continuing to pleasure him. Within a few minutes, Inéz was soaking wet, focusing entirely on the fingers that were entering her pussy. She lifted her eyes to his, suddenly brave enough to meet his intense gaze.

He was undoubtedly just as aroused as she was. Hunger was flashing in his grey irises, causing Inéz to become even more certain of what she was doing.

”It’s my turn, cara,” he rasped as he tangled his fingers with hers and pulled her hand away from his cock. Then he leaned down, pressing her against the cold counter so she could lay down. He pushed her legs even further apart as his mouth moved between her folds. His tongue was running up and down slowly, fully tasting her, circling around the clit.

She gripped the edge of the counter tightly, clearly holding back. "I want to hear you," Noah murmured in between the licks. And, as on command, her moans became more frequent and much louder, making him even hornier. Inéz was coming undone quickly, pushing herself further onto his lips. Goosebumps had appeared all over her skin due to the overall myriad of sensations and the thrill of the moment.

It was obvious that she hadn’t had a guy go down on her recently, if ever with the rapid response of her body, exploding with heat, making her back arch. He pulled his fingers out, slowing on the licks to prolong the moment just a little bit longer, admiring her rosy cheeks and full lips that couldn’t stop moaning anymore.

He straightened, pulling her up with him, and took off his shirt. Every muscle on his torso came into the light. He was a living and breathing work of art, his scarred skin so tempting to touch; every move oozing strength. Gawking wouldn't quite describe Inéz’s state. She was flabbergasted, amazed and mesmerized by his physique, even though she had seen it before, but had never really paid enough attention to soak in all the details. There had either been no time or no good lighting to do so. His body was drool-worthy, and if her cheeks hadn’t been red already, they would definitely be right now. His abs were sculptured to perfection, his six-pack standing out. His biceps were perfectly shaped from all the working out he did, his shoulders were broad and protruding rounding up his perfect appearance.

Look at me, notice me, understand me, love me.

She kept begging him mentally, hoping that it showed in her eyes and that he would be able to decipher her feelings without her saying as much as a word. She wanted more. Needed some kind of sign that there was no reason to end it all. That everything she’d done and would do was worth it.

Shaking her head to stop analyzing everything inside out, she moved her finger under his chin and slid it under his jawline. ”What do you want from me, Noah?” she asked quietly, afraid that she wouldn’t like the answer.

Noah was attentive enough to see the war raging within the girl. Her eyes were absent, lost, one second and then full of fire and desire the other. He wanted to know what had caused it, but right now diving into a deep conversation was the last thing on his mind.

He leaned closer to her ear. "Everything."

That was it. With that simple word, she was lost all over again. So, pushing Noah back slightly, she got down determined to make him feel as good as he made her.

"Do you miss it?" he asked out of the blue while they were lying in bed.

He was looking at her with admiration while slowly stroking the scar on her back. She pulled herself up on her elbows and shook her head almost instantly, giving him the answer she knew he needed.

"My old life is gone and I don’t mind. I’d rather have a life where I can finally stop pretending to be someone I’m not. It’s exhausting to lie to everyone all the time. And it’s even worse to have to make myself believe it, too," Inéz admitted.

She was pressed to Noah’s chest as if it was the last moment they would share. She could feel his heartbeat under the palm of her hand. And at this point she knew, she would fight everyone who told her that he didn’t have a heart. Because maybe it couldn’t be seen by everyone. Just a select few. But right now, it was beating for her, and looking into Noah’s eyes, she had no doubt about it.

The man had shown her how amazing it was to accept your inner monster. That it didn’t necessarily make her a bad person. Some monsters were good in their own, special way. And the one holding her tightly had shown her how to embrace the darkness. For the longest time, she’d hid it, afraid of people’s reaction. Loneliness had never been something she wanted to experience. Now, she fully accepted herself, seeing as it was the brave thing to do, and not a shameful act as she’d once thought. Craving something she shouldn’t want. Recognizing that there was that small part of her that had been missing all along and that joining the Famiglia had somehow made her feel whole again. And once she would be introduced as one of them, she hoped it would be even better.

He leaned down, tasting her lips. She tasted like war, and that was quite funny to him because Noah had always craved chaos. It was consuming, and even though it had no right to be there, it felt pure.

"You will never regain your innocence, cara. Even the purest heart is touched by darkness and you’re anything but innocent. You have just pretended to be so no one would see your true colors and abandon you. But I saw them, I see your whole range of colors and I love every single one of them. And I am still here," he whispered, making Inéz love him even more if that was even possible. "I want you. I want all of you. I want you inside out, catching your breath and aching for me as I ache for you. It’s never been a secret. I’ve never tried to hide that from you. I’ve never pretended I wanted anything less."

Maybe her nature could bring out the best in the monster himself. And him not fully admitting his feelings wasn’t even a problem for her. She didn’t care for those three words, because at that point saying them aloud would seem fake. At the very least he was saying more than before, and she wanted to take advantage of it.

"Isn’t there supposed to be a burning saint’s picture in the initiation? I thought it was a part of the whole process, but you didn’t use it."

She remembered that she had been really surprised by him changing what she had read about on the internet before.

Noah frowned, taken aback by the sudden change of topic. ”Every Famiglia can have a different process. It depends on the Capo dei capi. My father used the saint part, but I changed it as I took over. It didn’t make sense for me to pretend that any of it is being done in the name of God. I believe that Made Men just like to think that our duties are the will of the holy heavens, when in fact Satan is our patron. The bad, evil and cruel are the devil’s forte, and mixing faith with the mafia is ridiculous for me. My people can believe in God, go to church every Sunday, but I don’t ever want to be a witness of them doing anything in God’s name," he explained. "Does that make sense to you?"

She nodded, smiling slightly. It made perfect sense to separate his life from people’s beliefs. Oddly, she realized something strange at that moment. Noah was some kind of a visionary with a purpose. He didn’t care what others thought as long as they obeyed. His methods weren’t humane most of the time, but they worked. He knew what life should be like and understood that most people were inferior to him, and he simply showed them mercy. Killing wasn’t just an act of violence on his part, at least not always. It was a small change to a much bigger picture. And while they would all die eventually, when told about the dark extent of Noah’s reality, she was pulled in, with every intention to discover more.

"Why do you need Lynette?" she asked another question.

The Capo chuckled, shaking his head. "Not yet, cara. You will find out at the right time," he hinted and ended the conversation finally feeling the exhaustion that had been sneaking its way in for a couple of hours already. He breathed in the fruity scent that Inéz wore, and closed his eyes, immediately falling asleep.

  CHAPTER 41

Inéz stood very still in the middle of the living room in Noah’s penthouse, wondering if she’d heard right. Her eyes were glued to the TV screen, widening with each word the journalist was saying. But before she could gather her thoughts, the woman moved on to another topic as if the news weren’t anything big while Inéz was still trying to compose herself.

  It was impossible.

She grabbed the remote and rewinded the news, pausing at the beginning. Looking around, she noticed the Falcone brothers on the balcony, engaged in what looked like an intent conversation. Normally, she would have waited for them to finish, but not this time. She called them with a shaky voice. They came almost immediately, realizing that it must have been something important for Inéz to look as if she had seen a ghost, or heard the worse information possible. Which wasn’t far from the truth.

Flavio regarded the girl. She played the news once again.

This night a notorious head of the Seattle Crime Family - Severo Selvaggio was found dead in his cell in the ADX Florence Federal Prison. He had been convicted to life in prison for racketeering, participating in nineteen murders, and directing criminal activities including extortion, illegal gambling, loan sharking, and bribery. The death has primarily been said to be suicide by slashing the throat, however, later the toxicology report showed the presence of a neuromuscular-blocking drug which disabled the man from hurting himself. It was ruled as murder after the autopsy report came out. The most interesting circumstances were that Severo Selvaggio died at night with his cell door closed. He didn’t have a cellmate and the guards were patrolling around the clock. As it turns out, even a supermax prison is not as safe as it should be.

It sounded almost irrational to think that there was the possibility of murder in such a prison. There were some prisoners who had managed to escape a place like this but never had anyone got in to kill someone. The only explanation was that it had been an inside job by one of the guards.

"How is that even possible?" Inéz asked barely able to form a sentence.

Noah’s eyes flashed with fury when he heard the long-not-mentioned name of his younger sister’s murderer. The one who should have died by his hand in the most painful, cruel and brutal way. And it would have happened if he hadn’t been put in a high-security federal prison. Until now, he hadn’t even figured out how to get to the mafia boss as he was kept separate from the other prisoners, and the guards hadn’t proven easy to bribe either. But somehow, someone had managed what he had strived to do for years.

"Someone must have found a guard that was easier to bribe," suggested Flavio, turning on his tablet to search for more news on the matter.

"I highly doubt that. I bet that the FBI have already started an investigation way before they announced the murder to the news. Notice that they already mentioned the toxicology report which isn’t ready within an hour of the crime. It takes more time. Since there was already an issued report, it must have happened earlier. So, the feds had most likely checked the guards on duty by that time already," Noah said, dialing Isaac’s phone number.

He gave him the task of pulling
out the autopsy report on Selvaggio’s death to see the time of death and any other suspicious facts. As a mafia boss, he might be able to spot more things out of the ordinary.

Within a couple of minutes, Isaac sent the files, saying that he would be there with Drew soon.

The autopsy was confusing and nothing really made sense. The time of death had been set at one in the morning, yet the toxicology report had been recorded merely half an hour later, which was just as impossible as breaking into a high-security prison. Not to mention that the cause of death was not a slashed throat as they had said in the news, but rather blood loss from a shot.

Flavio cleared this throat. "If you ask me, he got exactly what he deserved. I don’t even care how he died. I’m just happy that he is gone."

"Lynette will be crushed when she hears about it." Inéz worried.

"She won’t. Her father fucked up big time with her," Noah pointed out, chuckling. "Lynette was dragged into this mess because of his decisions. She might be sad because he was her father, but I doubt even she could say that he deserved to live."

The elevator’s ring echoed in the penthouse, indicating that someone wanted to come up.

"It must be Nicodemo. He has returned from Seattle," said the Capo, accepting the request.

Soon all three of Noah’s soldiers were together, coming up with plausible scenarios about Severo’s death. And also figuring out what to do about Lynette. She was still missing, no sign of her in the Bratva hideout. Not to mention that two captains had been killed because of Noah’s search for her. And he didn’t want to stop.

"For fuck’s sake, I don’t even care why you need her. Nothing can be so important that it is worth losing your people," Flavio grunted, angry that his Capo wasn’t listening to him at all. He had every right to talk him out of any further search. And as his Underboss, and more importantly his brother, he should have got through to him already.
