Part of me wanted them to stay, but a stronger part wanted to be alone with Nicholas and have everything explained. Everything. I nodded at them almost imperceptibly.

“Okay, so yeah, Lily and I need to go now…we need our New Year’s kisses and we’re already late. Nicholas, it’s great to have you back and what you did for us was amazing. We are all eternally grateful to you—again.” She looked at me pointedly and grabbed Lily’s arm.

“Nicholas, thank you. We really are happy to see you again…more than you know.” Lily smiled in the darkness and she and Sophie faded away into the night.

Nicholas and I stood quietly in the mist. How many times I had imagined our reunion, with me running into his arms and him laughing and smiling down on me while he held me in his loving embrace. Our kiss would be so passionate it would put the greatest lovers in history to shame, and he would whisper all the things I yearned to hear.

This reunion was nothing like that.

The awkward silence surrounding us now was deafening; both of us seemed too afraid to speak or even move. I tried to remember that night, the fantasy I had replayed in my lonely mind infinite times since his disappearance. At the Isle, holding each other…breathing each other…kissing each other.

But the boy standing next to me now no longer seemed like the boy in my fantasy. The boy of my dreams. My savior.

  He felt like a stranger.
