Uncertainty: Volume 3

“You don’t have to say any more. Trent already told me how it went. It was wrong of me to think you would purposefully hurt me or cheat on me. I know you’re not like that. Anyway, I’ll let you get back to your dinner,” Daniel said, now looking at them both. “I hope the rest of your night makes up for my outburst.”
“Thank you,” Alice said as he went to leave. “Bye!”
He turned to wave at both of them, plainly embarrassed by his actions earlier. Alice and Trent went to sit back in the booth, worn out from the excitement. Hunger rushed back all at once as the adrenaline drained out of her system. She clutched her stomach and decided to try some of the surprisingly warm food in front of them. It must have been steaming when the server brought it out.
Alice took a few bites and had an almost mind-blowing experience with the taste. After scarcely eating the entire day, she needed some energy replenishment. The food there was more than amazing, especially on an empty and withering stomach. Trent nibbled at his course, too.
“Maybe I should move this restaurant up the list to number two,” Trent said to himself.
“Oh, shut up!” Alice humorously pushed him.
She used the napkin to wipe most of the dried tears and ruined makeup from her cheeks.
“It’s too bad I look like garbage now. I wanted to be all pretty for this date.”
“Shh, you look great! Most of the makeup is cleaned off. I think you’re stunning without it, anyway,” Trent complimented her. “Do you want to leave? I can have them stop the third course.”
“No, don’t do that! My stomach is dissolving as we speak. I think we can make this date work. I’m not giving up,” she said.
“Then we’ll carry on!” he shone his perfect smile on her.
Thus, they continued eating and sharing looks with each other. Each course tasted better than the last, leading to an exceptional dessert. Once they finished and paid, he put his arm around her and walked slowly to the car. Seated inside the warmed vehicle, Alice’s eyes became heavy after a few minutes.
“I can’t believe it happened again,” Alice mumbled.
“What happened?”
“I saw another person I wanted to evade, like we’re living in a small town or something.”
“I’m telling you,” Trent swore. “None of this is a coincidence. I think it was a test from the universe.”
“What did you say to Daniel to get him to apologize?” she asked tiredly. “I thought I had an enemy for life.”
“I just told him the truth. How our breakup years ago was a mistake in the first place. How I never got over you. Everything. I told him that you were firm in your decision, and I was the one to come over and beg you to be with me again. He also knows that the only thing I’ve bought for you so far has been food. I didn’t even try to explain your salary, but I figured it wasn’t required,” Trent rejoined. “I also told him that he needed to apologize for making you cry so much. You’re an amazing person, and you don’t need someone dragging your name through the mud.”
“I like the way you handled yourself back there. It was really great of you. I didn’t know what would happen.”
“How did you think I would act?” he sounded slightly offended.
“I don’t know. We’ve never been in a situation like that, and you looked so angry. I thought things might get physical if he kept throwing insults,” Alice replied.
“I may look really tough,” he flexed his free arm, “but I’m not much of a fighter.”
Alice ignored his silly joke and looked at him earnestly, “Because of the way you were tonight, I have a better idea of who you are now. You might have a great career and more money than you’ll ever know how to spend seriously, but you’re essentially the same man I fell in love with. I don’t need to get to know you anymore to realize I want to be with you; I already see who you are.”
“Does this mean we’re officially in a relationship?” he asked ardently.
“Yes. I’m all yours,” she kissed his cheek.
“I’m going to make it a priority to show you that this is the right decision for us. For the rest of our lives, I’ll prove it to you.”
“I can’t wait,” Alice said, leaning in for a deeper kiss this time.
