Dwight could tell that William was amazed my the accumulation of weaponry. “I could tell that you were shocked that I gave up my Bushmaster without too much of a fight. Here’s why.”
“Right, it wasn’t like you. I actually thought you might have been giving up. But then I realized there was probably something that you were not telling me.”
“I could afford to sacrifice one gun to throw Murphy off of the scent. I figured if I did not give up the gun, then Murphy and his goons would have descended en masse on us until I did surrender it. You see, now he will think that I am unarmed.”
“Don’t you think that will make you an easy target. I mean, he knows that you have livestock, cattle, orchards, and a garden. I know you’ve tried to hide it well, but he could go over to one of the neighbors and get a better view of the property.”
“You make a good point. But I think we need to use that assumption to our advantage. Even if Murphy has been spying on me, and I’m fairly sure that he has. He was no idea that I have this bunker hidden in the side of the mountain. I am going to play the town’s game for now. They have a few town hall meetings coming up that I am going to attend to appear like I am a team player. But when it comes to seizing and distributing my things, that’s when that will come to a stop,” explained Dwight.
“Do you really they will do that?” William asked.
Unfortunately, Dwight was not surprised by William’s naivety. “Of course they will,” replied Dwight. “I know it’s inevitable. Be when that time comes. We will be prepared.”
“What if we forge an alliance with some townspeople?” William asked.
“Not a bad idea,” replied Dwight. He thought about it some more. “Actually, that’s a very bad idea.” Thinking about it more and more thoroughly, Dwight replied, “I’m not well liked in the community. Guess I’ve spoken my mind one too many times. So, I’m definitely not popular in Townsend and I think I have outright enemies in Tucker Hollow. I never really got along with those folks.”
William interjected, “We could forge an alliance with other townspeople who also will be protesting the idea of redistributing our resources for the, uh, the greater good.”
Dwight interrupted, “Frankly, I don’t care for the greater good.”
“I know, hence the alliance.”
“I’ve worked nearly forty years on this bunker, my orchards, livestock, and arsenal to have it redistributed like some communist country.”
“I believe they call it socialism, dad.”
“Is that what they call it? It was called communism when I was growing up.”
“It’s called socialism in this country. Same concept though.”
“Well, your alliance idea is not going to fly. We really don’t need anyone else. Well, anyone more than who we already have on board. I mean, we’ll keep Vince and Gary. And I’ll take in Prue and her family when Liam returns with them. But other than that, I would feel more comfortable if we defend our family and property on our own. Those two fellas, Vince and Gary, they’re fairly sharp for one. And they know a thing or two about firearms. We will definitely use them. Not to mention that they are trained firefights. Even more, the reason to keep them on board. If we have to lock your daughters up, then so be it.”
William chuckled at Dwight’s joke. He then replied, “Goodness dad. You never seem to let things go and take help from someone else.”
“You’re right, I don’t.”
“There may come a time when we need help from someone else. You’ve clearly done your part to be self sufficient, but what if something catastrophic happens?”
“We will cross that bridge when we get to it. Until then, we defend our family and our property. And that’s the end of it.”
