  Alpha Province: Danger and Mayhem

After being attacked and stabbed for doing her job as a social worker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sierra Langley is on the run. Weeks of recovery behind her and her attacker still at large, Sierra is frightened of her own shadow. Terrified that the man who’d hurt her was going to hunt her down, she packs up her things and leaves everything behind.

Justice, Weldon, and Rhys Channing know that Sierra is their mate as soon as they enter the diner and when they hear she has nowhere to stay they offer her their spare room.

Trying to convince Sierra that they are the men for her is difficult after she inadvertently learns they’re wolf shifters. Nevertheless, the blazing attraction between them can’t be ignored forever and Sierra finally agrees to be their woman.

Just as Sierra begins to believe that Rhys, Weldon and Justice have strong feelings for her, peril follows her to Ambrose, North Dakota.

While she’s fighting for her life she isn’t sure she’ll ever get the chance to tell the Channing men how much she loves them.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Becca Van. I live in Australia with my wonderful hubby of many years, as well as my two children.

I read my first romance, which I found in the school library, at the age of thirteen and haven’t stopped reading them since. It is so wonderful to know that love is still alive and strong when there seems to be so much conflict in the world.

I dreamed of writing my own book one day but, unfortunately, didn’t follow my dream for many years. But once I started I knew writing was what I wanted to continue doing.

I love to escape from the world and curl up with a good romance, to see how the characters unfold and conflict is dealt with. I have read many books and love all facets of the romance genre, from historical to erotic romance. I am a sucker for a happy ending.

  Prologue

“What the…” Sierra Langley glanced around the parking lot when the hair on her nape stood on end. She felt as if she was being watched, but she couldn’t see anything or anyone about. She put her trepidation down to being exhausted after putting in just over twelve hours working at the women’s shelter. Trying to push her anxiety aside, she started walking again, but this time she moved faster. The small parking lot didn’t have many lights to illuminate the area since some of the globes had either blown out, or had been broken by vandals.

While she hated the thought of walking the streets of Pittsburgh alone, she had no other option. It was Friday night and the cab company was so busy ferrying people to and fro that there was almost an hour wait before a cab would be free to take her home. Since she knew it would be faster to take a bus, that was what she’d decided, but now Sierra wished she’d stayed back at the Womanspace East shelter where she’d have been safe. She only lived nineteen minutes away on the suburb of Upper Hill where she shared an apartment with a nurse.

Sierra spun around when she heard a noise behind her and sighed with relief when she saw a stray cat. Although she hated seeing abandoned animals, if she softened her heart, she’d likely have a menagerie big enough to start her own animal rescue center.

Pushing her thoughts aside, she turned to face the street. She was only about ten yards away from the road and the bus stop. She weaved around a couple of cars but came to a halt when a large masked man dressed in black emerged in front of her. Her heart thundered hard and fast, and she began to pant. Sweat sheened over her skin, and she trembled.

Sierra took a step back, and when the guy didn’t move she took another and another. Her fight-or-flight instincts kicked in as adrenaline surged through her body with her rapidly beating heart, and she spun on her heels intending to run. She didn’t even hear him move, but in the next moment, he had a hold of her long red hair in a cruel grip and yanked hard.

“Ow!” she cried out as loudly as she could so that if someone was close by they would hear her. Before she could scream at him to let her go, he had his free hand over her mouth.

Tears welled and flowed down her face when he kicked at the back of her knees, sending her falling to the concrete with a hard jolt. The impact to her knees sent pain jarring up through her legs. Before she could try to gain her feet again, her assailant had her flat on her back, his large body pinning her to the ground.

Sierra tried to punch him all the while screaming, but with his hand still over her mouth, her cries for help weren’t very loud. She bucked and writhed and clawed at his arms with her nails, but he didn’t even seem to feel her claws scoring his skin.

“You need to pay for what you’ve done, you fucking bitch.”

She stared into rage-filled brown eyes and quaked harder. Just as she thought about trying to gouge his eyes out and lifted her arms, he stabbed her in the shoulder.

Sierra screamed in agony until she had no air left in her lungs. She kicked her legs and swallowed back the threatening sickness. When she saw the glint of the steel blade as the asshole raised his arm again, she braced herself for more pain and continued trying to escape him.

She punched and slapped at his face, but he was much bigger than her, and his arms were longer and stronger. The knifed seared into her upper arm on the opposite side to where he’d first stabbed her. The pain was so intense she couldn’t even scream this time, all she could do was sob as she once more l
ost her breath. A flash of light caught her eye and it took her a few seconds to fathom they were headlights.

All of a sudden, he pushed up off her to his feet. He stared down at her for a second or two before saying, “This isn’t over, you cunt. You’re a dead woman!”

He bent over and jabbed the knife into her right upper thigh. She screamed again, squeezing her eyes closed as she awaited more agony as he yanked the blade out of her leg, but when nothing happened, she opened her eyes. She sobbed with pain and relief when she realized he was gone. Was someone near? Had he heard someone? Had the person in the passing vehicle seen them and stopped? Whatever it had been, the light had likely saved her life.

“Help me, please?” The tears trickled from her eyes quickly, and while she didn’t want to move, she knew she had to. She was bleeding badly, and if she didn’t get help soon, she might end up bleeding out. No one had come to help her at her cry for help.

Rolling to her side, being careful not to jostle the blade still in her leg, she tried to find her purse, which she’d lost in the scuffle, but it was nowhere about. Had the man who’d attacked her found it and taken it? If he had, then he knew where she lived, but that was something she could worry about later. Right now, she needed to get to a phone and call 9-1-1.

Sierra gasped and groaned as she managed to get to her feet. She was woozy and swayed and bit her lip to keep herself from screaming at the searing pain in her body, but she was determined she wasn’t going to pass out. If she did, she could end up dying before anyone found her.

Taking shallow breaths to circumvent the dizziness, she counted each step, trying to ignore the agony in her arm, shoulder, and thigh as she shuffled back toward the women’s shelter.

“Sierra! Oh god, you’re bleeding.” Joanie stopped a few feet away from her with shock, but thankfully her coworker’s disbelief didn’t last long. She led Sierra to her car and seated her in the front seat before calling for the emergency services.

Sierra was cold and shaking, but she was alive.

Nevertheless, she wasn’t sure for how much longer. Especially if her foe had found her purse with her address, house keys, and all her other personal belongings. What was worse was that she had no idea what her enemy looked like except that he was big and had brown eyes.

Sierra wasn’t going to let the bastard come at her again and kill her, even though she had no idea why he was dead-set on revenge, but there was no way she was going to hang around to find out.

As soon as she was healed, she was leaving and going to run.

It was the only way she’d be safe.

  Chapter One

  Six months later

“It’s almost sickening, isn’t it?” Justice Channing muttered under his breath so that none of the other shifters and their mates heard his comment. He and his brothers were at the hotel sipping on beers and trying to enjoy the live country music and the atmosphere, but all he felt was jealousy.

“You got that right,” Weldon replied.

“Do you want another beer?” Rhys asked.

“No.” Justice shoved to his feet. “I’m done. You two can stay if you want, but I’m heading home.”

“I’m coming, too.” Weldon stood and gazed at Rhys.

“I may as well get an early night.” Rhys scowled but followed when Justice and Weldon headed to the door.

Once he was outside, Justice felt as if he could breathe easy for the first time that night. The hotel had been so packed full of bodies it was hot and stuffy. Since this had been a precursor to the country western music festival, Emmy and her mates Declan, Brooks, and Jett had organized, the building hadn’t been bursting at the seams.

The festival would be in full swing in a couple of days, but thankfully it was being held outside. Winter had come and gone, but sometimes Justice wished that there was still snow and ice on the ground.

He and his brothers had moved to Ambrose, North Dakota after he’d gotten in touch with his buddies Zayn, Karter, and Jace Strike. They served in the military together and had kept in touch sporadically. When Zayn had told him about him and his brothers finding their mate, and the Strikes and the other shifters who lived in Ambrose were the law, he’d been intrigued. That intrigue grew when he’d also been told that no one could settle in Ambrose unless everyone in town agreed. That meant that there were hardly any normal humans around, and the ones that were, were mated to the shifters.

After talking things over with his brothers, he asked Zayn to get the shifter council to discuss whether they’d accept Justice, Weldon, and Rhys as new residents.

“How long before this fucking festival is done?” Weldon snarled.

“Sunday is the last day,” Justice replied as he led the way to their truck. He hated the hordes of people that invaded their small town as much as his brother and the other shifters did, but all the men had decided to give in to their mates.

“What happened to this being a quiet town?” Rhys asked. “We fucking moved here to get away from humans, not be invaded by them.”

Justice rubbed at the tight muscles in the back of his neck. He hated having so many people around, too, but he wasn’t about to bitch and quibble to their honorary pack leader, Tatum King. He was a lion shifter just as his brothers, Rex and Shaffer, were. While all the shifters living in Ambrose were just as anti-social as he and his brothers were, they all seemed to have softened since finding and claiming their mates.

He’d been surprised as fuck when he’d seen Zayn, Karter, and Jace Strike and how happy they were. Zayn smiled more often than not now, and while Justice was happy for his friend and his siblings, he was jealous as hell. He’d met Tami and had liked her on the spot, but he wasn’t attracted to her in the least. Justice had nearly been blown away when he found out that Tami was a wolf shifter like her mates, and him and his brothers. He’d never even thought that a human could be changed, but Zayn and his brothers had each given Tami blood when she’d nearly died.

He wanted a woman for his own just like everyone else in town had, but he couldn’t see that happening anytime soon. Human women didn’t interest him at all. That was unless the urge to fuck got too intense to ignore, but he always made sure the woman he was with knew it was a one-night stand.

Now that he and his brothers were out of the Marines he had too much time on his hands. He hadn’t even noticed how lonely he was until he, Rhys, and Weldon had moved to North Dakota. Luckily, the past six weeks they’d been too busy renovating the abandoned home they’d bought for a song to ponder over anything else, but now the house was finished.

The gardens were still a mess, but they would start working on landscaping the grounds tomorrow. He and his brothers had discussed starting their own landscaping business since they all hated being cooped up inside and they’d agreed. Being in the northern part of the country where snow and ice were prevalent in the colder months had him thinking of ways to keep outside the house looking nice even at the first melt.

He’d sketched out some ideas but had yet to show them to his brothers, but he would first thing tomorrow.

As Justice walked from Main Street to a side road where he’d parked his truck, dodging around men and women to get there, he decided it would be prudent to keep away from the small town and the main street as much as possible until the humans were gone. It was only Wednesday, so the town would be overrun for a few more days. He was just glad his and his brothers’ home wasn’t too close to the B&B where many humans were staying.

From what he’d heard, the motel behind the hotel and the Louis B&B were full. He just hoped that there were no riffraff and no trouble makers amongst the people here to listen and watch the bands play.

“What the fuck is that?” Weldon asked, stopping dead.

“What’s what?” Justice asked as he gazed about. He glanced at the diner, but there were too many people in there to see much, and he couldn’t figure out what Weldon was talking about.

“Smell the air.” Weldon sniffed loudly.

Justice looked at Rhys and then they both sucked in deep breaths through their noses. It took another couple of deep inhales to sort through all the other smells in the air. When he latched onto one particular scent, his inner wolf sat up and took notice, but so did he. The fragrance was like nothing he’d ever smelled before. It was light and airy but had a tinge of something sweet mixed with it.

“I have to find out…” Rhys lifted his nose to the air, and then he licked his lips, as if trying to taste the aroma.

Justice did the same and his wolf went nuts, pacing back and forth and charging at his guts trying to get out. His cock went from flaccid to hard in less than three seconds flat, leaving him feeling light-headed. When he was sure he wasn’t about to pass out or stumble, he followed his brothers and that delectable perfume.

Rhys paused outside the diner door, gazed at him and Weldon over his shoulder, turned the handle, and stepped into the noisy melee. Tatum King was serving at the counter with his mate and wife, Pixie. Husband and wife smiled in greeting before going back to serving their waiting customers.

Rhys walked closer to the counter and then stepped aside.

Justice stopped breathing when he saw a long flowing curtain of wavy red hair on the petite woman sitting on a stool at the counter. He didn’t know if it was fate or Rhys’s intimidating size and serious appearance that had the three people sitting close to their mate paying their bill and scampering away, but Justice didn’t care. He was just glad to have the opportunity to sit next to the one woman the fates had created just for him and his brothers.

The hair on his body stood on end, his blood pumped fast, and his hard dick twitched against his zipper when she started talking.

“Are you sure there’s nowhere else I can lease a room? I didn’t know the bus only came through town once a week. I have no other means of transportation unless there’s a cab service.”
