Paxton nodded and his gut tightened with certainty. “Yeah, without a doubt. From the moment I saw her I think part of me knew.”
“Well, congratulations man. Welcome to this crazy family.” Cane reached out, and they slapped palms then bumped fists. It was something Coco had shown him, something their family did, and now that included Paxton. “When do you think you’ll do it? Get married, I mean.”
“Not anytime soon. Probably after she’s done with school. I’m just tired of these kids flirting with her because she’s the pretty girl with the accent.” Paxton grimaced. He’d met two of her classmates that were bad at taking hints and set them straight.
A ring wouldn’t change things. He knew that. And yet, it was a promise. A symbol that no matter how tough things were when they were apart, they were going to be together.
Cane sighed and Paxton tuned back into their exchange. Cane was staring at Mia, who had her youngest in her lap, her cheek resting against his head.
“I can relate. When I asked Mia to marry me, I got so flustered, I mixed up our names,” Cane said softly. He glanced at Paxton. “Tonight, huh?”
Paxton drank a gulp of water. “Now. Before I lose my nerve.”
With any luck he’d keep their names straight.
Paxton pushed to his feet then patted his pocket. Lacey had helped him pick it out by doing the actual shopping and sending him pictures and links of what she thought Coco would want.
In the end, he’d decided to go with a hand made, one of a kind yellow topaz ring set in sterling silver. Diamonds didn’t reflect the woman he’d come to know. The topaz made him think of her warmth, the fire she kept burning inside of her.
Cane slipped inside and pulled his phone out.
Paxton’s focus narrowed to the beautiful woman in the black dress. She’d finally gotten the red out of her curls, leaving the ends more blonde than brown. As she spoke her hands moved.
He paused to take her in.
Coco had always been confident, but over this last year she’d become more self-assured. It was in how she spoke, how she carried herself. She was truly amazing.
The room erupted into laughter. He took that as his signal and edged past the others to join Coco as the center of attention.
“Hi, you.” She reached for his hand.
He lifted it to his lips instead of allowing her to draw him in.
“Now that we’re all here.” He spared a glance at Mrs. Pedersen, who was already wiping at her eyes. “Coco, I’m not good with words.”
“I’ll say.” She smirked and her smile widened.
“Thanks.” He grinned. The butterflies settled a bit, and he drew in a deep breath. “There’s something I’ve said a lot this week that I haven’t yet said to you. Coco, from the moment I saw you swinging a tree branch at Cameron, I think a part of me knew I was going to love you.”
Coco dipped her chin and chuckled. She glanced right then left, finally catching the drift that something was going on.
“I knew in that moment that I was going to love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Paxton eased down onto his knee and pulled the ring out of his pocket with his right hand.
Her eyes went wide, and she covered her mouth.
Waiting until tonight to talk to Cane had been the right call. Coco would never have been surprised if Cane knew beforehand.
Paxton grinned up at her. He couldn’t wait to make all their dreams come true. “Coco, will you marry me?”
“Y-yes,” she stammered.
Paxton held his breath and slipped the ring onto her finger.
It fit.
