Missy hugged him hard. “You better.”

Kenneth got in on the passenger side and, Seth sped off in a hurry. He drove to the outskirts of town and pulled up to a small gas station with a single bay garage. Kenneth observed that the building was old. “Why are we stopping here?”

“I’m meeting Bobby. He’s my inside man.”

“This place looks like a scene from a fifties movie.”

“Stay here. He’s expecting me to come alone.”

Seth got out and went into the garage where a man was working on a car. Kenneth noticed the man was older, around mid-seventies. He was wearing a dark-gray jumpsuit and his thinned hair was greased back, reminding him of the ducktail haircut. A few minutes later, Seth got back in the truck and drove off.

  “Was that Bobby?”

  “Yep.”

“What’s the deal with the old-school look?”

“His dad opened the gas station back in the fifties. Bobby grew up working there. When his dad passed away, he took over. He left it the same, probably for nostalgia.”

“It looks like he’s stuck in the fifties.”

  “That’s what I just said.”

“I’m curious why an old man is helping you.”

“Same reason you are. He’s tired of scumbags.”

  “What did y’all talk about?”

  “Just went over everything.”

“Does he know if the thugs you hired went to the police?”

  “He doesn’t think so.”

“Doesn’t think so? That’s not too convincing.”

  “It’ll be fine.”

Seth was driving down a rural road, surrounded by nothing but farmland. Kenneth was perplexed. “Where are we?”

  “South of Seguin.”

“And why are we way out in the middle of nowhere?”

  “To pick up the scumbags.”

“It’s wide open. Cops can see us coming for miles.”

“We’re coming in a backway to the wooded area of our meeting point.”

“Dude, I really don’t like this.”

“That’s why I wanted to come alone.”

A few miles down the road, Seth turned onto a gravel road. He went down several miles. The area had turned from farmland to woods. He pulled off the road into an opening through some trees. “We’re here.”

Kenneth was nervous. “Fuck, dude! You could have warned me! The cops could already be here!”

“Chill out. The meeting site is almost a mile to the south.” Seth grabbed a backpack and got out. “Let’s go. It’s a long hike and it’s already five o’clock. We’re going to run out of daylight if we don’t hurry.”

Kenneth traipsed behind Seth as they quickly hiked through the woods. “I hope you know where you’re going.”

Seth held up a GPS unit. “Why do you think I’m carrying this?”

“I thought that was a radio. So how much further is it?”

“About a half a mile. And try to be quiet.”

When they reached the top of a hill, Seth crouched down, easing into an opening that overlooked a valley. He pulled out a pair of binoculars.

  “Can you see them?”

  “Two men.”

  “Where are they?”

  “In front of the barn.”

  “I don’t see a barn.”

  “It’s 1.4 miles away.”

“How can you see that far?”

“With these binoculars, I can see an insect perched on a leaf that’s half a mile away.”

“Who gives a fuck about bugs? Do you see any cops?”

  “No.”

  “How many men are there?”

“I said I only see two.”

  “Where are the scumbags?”

  “Not sure.”

“How many more men do you think there are?”

  “Not sure.”

“How long are we going to stay up here?”

  “Until I’m comfortable.”

  “How long will that be?”

“You’re as bad as Barry with all the questions.”

Kenneth sank to the ground and leaned back against a tree. “Let me know when we’re heading out.”

  “Okay.”

Kenneth eventually fell asleep waiting for Seth to give the signal to continue the mission. He twitched awake, immediately searching for Seth, but found him to be missing. His head sagging in frustration, he discovered the binoculars in his lap. He peered around again, thinking he’d overlooked him the first time and wondered if Seth had just snuck off the take a piss. Forgetting that he was supposed to be quiet, he called out for his friend. “Seth! Where are you? Seth!” He started wandering around. “Seth! Where in the fuck are you?” When he didn’t find him nearby, it crossed his mind he might have ventured out to meet the men alone. He quickly picked up the binoculars and began combing the landscape for the barn. When he located it, his eyes magnified to twice their normal size as he gawked at decapitated bodies posed in lewd sexual positions. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing and questioned his perceptions. It looked like an orgy from Hell. What the fuck, he thought? He examined each of the bodies one-by-one concluding, thankfully, Seth was not among them. Peering around, he noticed something odd; a group of naked people was pulling an old horse-drawn cart and heading in his direction. He zoomed in the binoculars and spotted Seth in the cart. He lowered the binoculars and wondered to himself, what the fuck is going on around here?

A few minutes later, the nude cart pullers topped the hill. Seth sternly called out to them. “Whooooa, Nellie!”

When the group halted, Kenneth discerned that six men and three women were occupying the spots along the shafts of the cart. Mouths sewn shut; their faces were covered in snot from being forced to breathe through their noses. Seth was holding a gun in one hand and a whip in the other. Kenneth silently questioned Seth with a disconcerted expression of bewilderment. “What the hell is going on?”

Seth patted the seat. “Jump on. We need to get out of here before it gets dark.”

Kenneth climbed into the cart and sat next to him. “Who are these people?”

“Our scumbags.” Seth cracked the whip above their heads. “Trot, you fuckers!” They hauled-ass lugging the cart through the woods.

Kenneth was flummoxed. “I don’t understand what’s happening. Why are you making them do this?”

“It’s simple. I found the cart in the barn and didn’t feel like trekking back up the hill.”

“Don’t you think this is kind of weird?”

  “Not really.”

“And what’s the deal with the decapitated bodies back there?”

“Those are the assholes I hired. They tried to fuck me over.”

“I told you that was going to happen, but why are they positioned like that?”

“Because they like to fuck people over.”

“Damn, Seth! You do some of the most bizarre shit sometimes.”

A couple of the bare-assed degenerates pulling the cart glanced back, yelling through their stitches. Kenneth was shaking his head. “Why did you sew their mouths closed?”

“Didn’t feel like hearing them bitch and whine.”

  “Of course, you didn’t.”

“Barry’s infantile tantrums are still ringing in my ears.”

  Kenneth laughed.

When the group reached the truck, Seth strong-armed them into the camper shell, then forced them to give each other a tranquilizer shot. Seth pulled out of the wooded area and keyed up on his two-way radio. “Swamp Fox!”

  “Go ahead.”

“All is well. We should be back in about an hour.”

  “Ten-four.”

Built-up tension drained from Kenneth as they drove down the road. “I’m glad that’s over. I was so worried we were going to get busted.”

“It can get dicey when others are involved.”

“Especially when you turn it into a fucking circus.”

“I didn’t turn shit into a circus. And I think it
went smooth as hell.”

“Tell that to the police that have to investigate that mess. I’m sure they’re going to freak out when they see all those headless bodies fucking each other.”

Seth and Kenneth laughed together as they thought about the reaction the cops would likely have to the grisly scene that awaited their arrival.

On the way back to the RV, Seth stopped by the old gas station. Kenneth stayed in the truck when Seth carried a large sack into the garage. He handed it to Bobby then they shook hands.

A few minutes later, Seth got back in the truck and took off. Kenneth eyed him suspiciously. “What did you give him?”

  “A sack full of heads.”

“Is everyone you know fucking demented?”

  “Yep. Including you.”

  He chucked to himself.

  Bamboozled

The sun was setting as they pulled up to the building. Wyatt opened the overhead door, allowing them to drive in. Seth opened the back of the truck, then motioned for Wyatt to come over. “Let’s get them moved into the RV.” He looked around the building. “Where’s Spanky?”

  “He’s around here somewhere.”

  “Is he still pouting?”

  “A little.”

“Go get him so he can help.”

A few minutes later, Barry walked up. He didn’t say anything as he stared at Seth.

“Don’t just stand there. Help Wyatt move these assholes.”

  “I’m waiting.”

  “For what?”

  “Your apology for cheating.”

“You still crying about that? And I didn’t cheat.”

“I’m not fucking crying. And fuck if you didn’t.”

Seth noticed Barry didn’t have a missing tooth anymore. “What the fuck is that in your mouth?”

He lowered his top lip to conceal it. “Nothing.”

  “Bullshit!”

Wyatt laughed. “It’s a white Chiclet. He wedged it between his teeth to hold it in the gap.”

Barry became pissed. “You don’t know shit!”

Seth reached out and tried to grab his lip. “Let me see it.”

  Barry stepped back. “No!”

“At least your breath won’t stink.”

  “It’s not funny.”

“I’m not laughing. I think that was creative.”

  “You think so?”

“Yeah. You can sport an orange one for Thanksgiving, red for Christmas, pink for Valentine’s and a green one for Saint Patrick’s Day.”

“I knew you would have something smartass to say.”

“I’m just messing with you. It looks fine.”

  “Don’t patronize me!”

“Patronize? That’s a mighty big word for you.”

He shook his genitals. “I have something big for you right here.”

  “To a fucking ant.”

  “Ha, ha, motherfucker!”

Wyatt grabbed one of the men in the back of the truck and started pulling him out. “Barry. Grab his legs. These fuckers aren’t going to move themselves.”

“I’m not doing shit until y’all make this right.”

“And how can we do that?”

“I want a gold tooth to replace the one Missy took. And it better be solid gold.”

  “Anything else?”

“Yeah, and some kind of artificial eye. A cool one, like a cat’s eye, so I don’t have to wear this stupid patch. And I want Seth to admit he cheated and that I don’t owe him shit.”

Kenneth walked up laughing. “A gold tooth and a fucking Halloween eye. I’m sure the chicks will dig the retarded gangster look.”

“Screw you! And I don’t see women flocking to your ass! Your bald head looks like a fucking Milk Dud!”

Kenneth became angry. “Fuck you, you little prick!”

Seth intervened before they got into it. “Y’all chill out!” He looked at Barry. “If you want a gold tooth and a fucking Halloween prosthesis, I’ll get ‘em for you.”

“It has nothing to do with fucking Halloween, so y’all stop saying that.”

“Whatever. You’ll be the one wearing it.”

  “And what about your apology?”

“I told you I didn’t cheat. You’re just trying to worm your way out of the bet.”

“You did cheat, and I’m not fucking paying you.”

  “We’ll discuss that later.”

Missy walked up. “Y’all still arguing over that shit?”

Barry looked as if he was going to cry. “They’re trying to hoodwink me.”

  Everyone started laughing.

  “It’s not funny!”

Seth had an idea. “I know how to fix it. You think I cheated, and I think you’re trying to weasel out of a bet. We’ll settle it with this group of assholes.”

Kenneth shook his head. “Hold up! I thought we were going to hunt them?”

“We are, but we’ll also be betting on who survives the longest.”

Kenneth pointed to a man that was stocky. “I choose him.”

“You can’t pick until I get them ready.”

“Get them ready? Aren’t you just going to let them go, then we hunt them down?”

  “That would be boring.”

“Here we fucking go again! You said you weren’t going to do anything fucked up.”

“That’s incorrect. You asked if I was going to do any gay shit and I said no.”

Barry laughed at Kenneth. “You got Bamboozled, fool.”

Seth looked at Barry. “Bamboozled? Hoodwink? Patronize? Where are you coming up with this shit?”

Wyatt pulled a small book from his pocket. “He’s been reading this.” He held it up so everyone could read the cover. Words to Make You Sound Intelligant.

Barry snatched it from him. “You fucking thief! That’s mine.”

Kenneth was shaking his head. “Dude, you look like you’re the one that got bamboozled. That book was written by an idiot.”

“Don’t start. You’re just jealous that I’m bettering myself.”

“I’m being serious. The author misspelled ‘intelligent’ on the cover?”

Barry looked at it. “Uh… You know what they say? You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

“You know what? You’re right. It’s perfect for you. A book written by an idiot for an idiot.”

He stuck it in his back pocket. “Whatever, dude!”

Wyatt got Barry’s attention. “Can we start moving these assholes?”

Barry and Wyatt started hauling the slimebags into the RV. Seth handed Kenneth a folder. “If you want, you can pick up William Fetterman in Uvalde and then meet us in Catarina.”

“I thought we were going to hunt theses assholes we have in the truck?”

“We are. We’re taking them to a wildlife management area that’s to the east of Catarina. Uvalde is on the way if you take Highway 90. If we don’t pick him up now, we’ll have to backtrack later.”

“I don’t have a problem doing it now. I was just making sure you weren’t changing your mind about the hunt.”

  “Nope.”

  “Then I’ll head on out.”

Seth looked at his watch. “It’s almost ten o’clock. Uvalde is about a two-hour drive from here. Picking up William should take you about thirty minutes to an hour, but it’s another hour drive to Catarina, which means you will be arriving around 2 AM. We’ll be at a truck stop when you first come into Catarina. It’ll be on the right.”

“See you then.” He took off towards his truck.

Barry ran up to Kenneth as he was driving off. Kenneth stopped, letting him in the truck. Wyatt marched up to Seth as they sped off. “I know Barry didn’t just ditch my ass.”

  “Yep.”

“I still have four more assholes to move.”

“Don’t get in a tizzy. I’ll help you.”

“I didn’t think those two even liked each other.”

“It’s a love hate thing.” Seth helped Wyatt move the rest of the unconsciou
s delinquents into the RV.

Two hours later, Kenneth and Barry stopped at a rest area just outside of Uvalde. Kenneth looked through the file Seth had given him on William. He showed Barry a printout from Google Maps. “William is staying here.”

Barry noticed the house was out in the country. It was surrounded by farmland. “This is good. Less people.”

He read through some pages. “Shit! He lives with another dude named Isaac. We’ll have to come up with a way to work around that.”

“We can fuck him up too.”

“I don’t think so. It doesn’t have any information about him except that the house and land belong to his family.” Kenneth showed him a picture of William. “This is the dude we’re going after.”

The man in the photo was skinny, had big ears, eyes that were close together, hair cut like a mullet and a very sparse mustache. “Nice trash-stash.”

“What the fuck is a trash-stash?”

“You know; the stereotypical, white trash mustache. They’re thin with patches of missing hair. It seems the trashier they are, the less they can fucking grow hair on their face. But they sure in the fuck can grow a mullet.”

  Kenneth laughed.

“And how old is this fucker? He looks young.”

  “Twenty-eight.”

“What the fuck did he do to get on the list?”

“Murdered an elderly woman when he stole her purse. He did it when he was eighteen. He just got paroled from prison for good behavior.” Kenneth got out of the truck and stood between the open door and cab. He opened a duffle bag and started changing his clothes. He put on a bulletproof vest, covered by a black jacket. Barry was sitting in the truck wearing gray sweatpants, a red t-shirt and white tennis shoes. “You better change your clothes now. We’re not stopping again until we get there.”

  “This is all I have.”

“Dude! You’re going to stand out.”

  “I don’t give a fuck.”

Kenneth put on black tactical boots, black gloves and a black toboggan. “You might not care if you get your ass shot, but I do.”

“Shot? Do you think they have guns?”

Kenneth got in the truck. “I’m sure. They live in the country.” Kenneth put William’s address in his GPS and sped off.

“Do you have another vest I can wear?”

He took a deep breath. “Yeah.”

  “Where’s it at?”
