“I’m stuffed.” He shoved it back again, smiling politely. “I couldn’t eat another bite.”

The agent sighed. “Fine. I believe you asked why you’re here?”

Thomas nodded, heart pounding, fearing what he might hear next.

“The answer is simple. It regards a game and your role in it.”

“Game?” Thomas scowled. He might have been involved in all sorts of law-bending protests in his time, but he wasn’t one to play games. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The agent’s smile widened, turning a bit sinister. “Someone wants to use you as bait.”

“Bait?” Thomas shuddered at the word. He was a lot of things—attorney, gay man, activist—but he sure was no snitch. And he’d never be anyone’s bait.

The agent waved his hand again and a shimmering image appeared over the dirty, water-stained wall. A tropical island. The image zoomed closer, to show a white shore and a couple.

A shiver prickled Thomas’s skin and frozen fingers squeezed his heart.

Sunlight gleamed off the woman’s long silver-streaked black hair. It was different from the last time he’s seen her, but he’d know her anywhere. He’d spent the past few months worried to death about her because she hadn’t returned any of his calls.

  His sister. Thana.

Thomas’s throat closed. Surely, they wouldn’t use his family against him.

Yet, it seemed that was exactly what someone planned to do.
