  Mir

Babette’s heart skipped a beat as she replied,

  Mir,

Blessed be the gods. I will meet you then. I know I cannot wear your necklace in public, but I was pleased to have received it.

  Babette

And she hesitated as to whether or not to attach the nude picture of herself, and she decided to do it. Alliance men were always posting naked pictures of themselves, so why shouldn’t I? She had heard that women often did this when they were courting men, why not?

Mir was happy to have received a message back from Babette. And he was absolutely giddy with the picture she had sent of herself naked only wearing the necklace he had sent. He looked at it for a long time admiring her human body, like an Alliance but not Alliance woman. He longed to touch her fur and see whether it felt soft or rough. He messaged her back,

Wear it under your clothing as if I am touching you, always.

On the appointed day, Babette left House Human early to meet Mir at the East Gate of the Promenade. She was excited to see him again. She arrived at the Gate a little late because she had initially gone to the wrong one. By the time she arrived, he was already there waiting for her in a crowd of other Alliance people. They all looked twice when they saw her. Even though it was not uncommon to see humans in the Capital City, it still surprised some people.

“You are just as beautiful as I remember you in my dreams,” Mir said as he looked at Babette.

  “From the punishment room?”

“In the waiting room and afterward, of course. Come,” he indicated they should enter the park and walk the Promenade.

  She followed with a smile.

“I love the Promenade in spring,” he commented.

“I like it all the time, I guess,” she said politely. She liked him so much she was nervous and couldn’t think of what to say.

Mir smiled and then said, getting to the point, “ I want to court you and marry you, Babette, but I won’t be eligible to court you for another year at least if we do things by the book.”

“I’ve never been one to follow the rules.”

“I want to do this properly; will you wait for me?”

  “Why wait?”

They stopped walking, “Because it’s forbidden to do otherwise and since we were both being punished by the High Priestess, I assume neither of us has money to pay fines to have these sins, which would be great, erased.” He didn’t mention the blood price was death.

She couldn’t help but smile up at him, “Oh,” she said in just the way that meant, ‘that’s too bad,’ but that also meant, ‘Kiss me now, kiss me and I don’t care about any fines.’

Mir looked into her blue eyes full of wanting for him and then at her slightly opened mouth and wanting nothing more than to kiss her. But they were in public, and he couldn’t risk another punishment so soon after the other. He slowly raised his finger up to her lip, caressed her warm skin, and then placed his finger under her chin and to lift it up and close her tantalizing mouth. “Don’t tempt me, little tabi.”

Babette knew that ‘tabi’ was a term of endearment, she just smiled and then continued walking, “Are we going to be pen pals then?”

Mir laughed, “The translation must be off as I wouldn’t send you papers from around the galaxy.”

“Just friends who write to each other but never touch.”

He purposely brushed her hand as they walked, “I wouldn’t say ‘never’ but not in public, and we cannot court until I’m invited back into my house either.”

  “But that’s not fair.”

“I don’t make the rules,” Mir said with a touch of resentment.

“I know, of course not,” Babette caught herself, realizing he was caught with an even bigger problem than she was. “Is it for sure that you will be invited back?”

  “No.”

When he didn’t elaborate, she asked, “What happens if you can’t make it happen?”

  “I remain Houseless.”

  “Really?” she asked in disbelief.

“Yes, I’ll be without a House. It’s the risk everyone takes when they switch classes. It’s there to make sure people who are not fully committed don’t do it.”

“Oh, and do you have to have a House for us to marry?”

“No, but it would be problematic for any children, they would be Houseless.” He paused and then added, “I could never do that to a child.” Except when he looked at Babette. When he looked at her, he felt like all these rules and laws, he grew up with didn’t matter anymore. He was confident in their destiny.

“Well, it’s not that big of a deal, is it? I mean, you are Houseless now. I want to be with you.” She really did. Babette had never felt so strongly about a man or anything in her life before. And right now, he was in front of her, and she wanted him.

“Yes, but I was born into a House. I have my position on a starship because I was born into a House and showed great promise for a different class. To be born, Houseless is terrible. Those born Houseless will never have a position in Alliance society.”

“Oh,” Babette said, disappointed at the finality of his words. She didn’t care for all these Alliance rules. She just wanted him. “You are really Alliance after all.”

  “What do you mean?”

“That you plan everything? And never just go with your instincts?”

“I’m probably the least Alliance person that you’ll ever meet. That’s why we met where we did, and I’m in this situation of being Houseless. However, I’ve higher ambitions for myself than just running off and marrying the first human woman I see, no matter how attracted I am to her,” he lied, even in that moment he was unsure whether or not he would take her to the Underworld to marry, even now. The Underworld was the only place in the Alliance for couples of different classes to marry.

Babette was momentarily pacified by this compliment and then asked, “Tell me about your ambitions then, and I’ll decide if you are worth waiting for.”

“I already know you’re going to wait for me. You said you would, and we are destiny you and I, but I will tell you anyway, you know.”

“I don’t really believe in destiny,” she lied because she had no other way to explain her attraction and irrational behavior towards Mir. She thought, On Earth, we call this ‘love at first sight’ but isn’t that the same as destiny?

“Of course, you do. All Alliance people believe in destiny, and you are an Alliance citizen now.” She didn’t protest, so he continued, “I’m currently moving classes from the slave class to maximum class. I finished my squire duties to Admiral Jei on the Alliance Flagship last year, and now I’m an officer on the Fira. Once I am promoted again, I’ll apply for entry back into the House I was born into. I see no reason they would not accept me. But, if I act too immorally or fail to make it to high enough officer rank, they can deny me.”

  “I’m immoral, aren’t I?”

“No, but to be with you without courting beyond today could be seen as immoral, but you are not immoral. The rules regarding this and human women, in particular, are unambiguous. I should not even be talking to you. Actually, you know that.”

“Do you think we will be fined?”

“No, we could have just casually run into each other. It’s a busy place the Promenade and on such a fine day too.”

“But will I be able to see you again? When you return?”

  “I don’t know.”

“You want me to wait a year or more, but we might not ever be able to meet during that time?”

  “Yes.”

“I don’t know if I can do that, Mir.”

“What are your other options? You’ll find no other man like me. I dare you to try.”

Babette smiled, “I like a good dare. I’ll keep you updated.”

Mir just looked at her in disbelief. He hadn’t imagined this going this way, but he was not one to back down, and he wasn’t going to beg her to be his, “Good,” he said unsure of himself. “For every man you
see privately in the next year, you will owe me.”

  “Owe you what?”

“Something. I don’t know you well enough to name my price yet.”

“A service or a material thing?”

“You’ll owe me a day of a human garment,” Mir said this off of the top of his head because he still had her undergarments from the punishment day. He reckoned she didn’t realize that until now, possibly.

  “Excuse me?”

“I’ve heard,” Mir explained, “that human women wear nightclothes and underclothes that you must ask the gods for extra penance for in the form of prayer candles. I would ask that as well,” he pointed to her dress. “For every man you entertain, you’ll have no undergarments for a day after we are married during the week. For example, one man, one day every week, no undergarments, and so forth.”

“And if I meet more than seven men on my quest?”

“I doubt it. Or else we will double the days you owe me,” he said.

“I can be quite fast,” she said teasingly even though she could tell he didn’t like it. She wanted to get back at him a little as she didn’t like his situation. She knew he could not really change the situation he was in now, but it didn’t change the fact that she still felt frustrated by it.

“Then we will come up with something else if your list becomes too long. In the meantime, are you wearing the necklace that I gave you?”

Babette nodded and instinctively touched her chest, where the necklace lay against her skin.

“Good. Now,” Mir said, looking around, “Let’s go sit over there.” He motioned to a black stone bench.

Babette followed his lead, and they went to sit down next to each other, but not touching.

Mir turned to Babette and said, “I have the same necklace, but I want to seal our commitment to each other today. Do you want that too?”

Babette was confused, “What do you mean?”

“What we just talked about. That you, despite whatever you do publically, are privately still waiting for me.”

Babette remembered the Commander’s words on her voyage over about Alliance people always leaving out essential details, she cautioned herself, and she wanted to ask more. Still, she couldn’t make the words come out. Instead, she said, “Yes.”

“Now, do you trust me to make this promise binding?”

“How?” Babette liked Mir a lot, but she worried a little about the word ‘binding’ as the only other time she had heard that word used was in conjunction with Doctor Dru and her husband, and she wasn’t ready to commit to something she couldn’t really commit to forever. “And for how long will our commitment be binding?”

“Only until we agree that it is not anymore. We need only say the words to undo it. Now, do you want to make this promise binding?”

Babette looked into his eyes and felt like she would give him anything, “Yes. Show me how.”

Mir smiled and said under his breath, “You’re going to show me actually.” Then he pulled something small out of his pocket and motioned for her to take it with her hand.

Babette took the small silver ball and looked at Mir questioningly.

“Place it at the hem of your skirt and blow on it. Pretend you dropped something.”

Babette was curious now and did as she was told. As soon as she blew gently on the tiny silver ball, it sprouted legs and ran inside her dress. She could not help herself and peered up her dress. She couldn’t see anything but darkness, though. She sat back up when she heard Mir’s laughter, though.

“You can’t see it, but you should feel it soon.”

“What do you…” she barely got the words out before she felt a sucking on her labia. She closed her eyes thinking, The Alliance is such a strange place.

“It’s working. You need to come my dear sweet Babette, to make this binding. I’m sorry we have to do it here, but given our circumstances, this is the best we can do.”

“What? I’m not doing this here,” she said and then closed her eyes again, unable to stop the pleasure from the little machine.

Mir leaned closer without touching her and said, “I’m sorry, my tabi. I wish it was my tongue on your furry wet folds.” He looked at her beautiful pale face and longed to run his hand through her hair and down her body. He was extremely jealous of the little robot now.

“I don’t want to do this here,” she admitted feeling embarrassed. “Everyone will know,” she looked at the people walking by them.

“No one knows,” he reassured her. “Only you and I know. No one is close enough to smell how wonderful you smell now. Your vagina inviting me in, and you have no idea how painful this is for me not being about to accept that invitation now.”

She looked over at him and said, “Why are we doing this? Let’s just go somewhere.”

“We can’t. Do this for me, please?”

She closed her eyes and nodded. The robot was bringing her closer and closer to orgasm, but she didn’t know if she could come in such a public place.

“Babette, you must come soon. Is the robot malfunctioning?”

“No, I’m embarrassed,” she admitted again.

He leaned in closer, “Babette, this is the sexiest thing in the world that I will remember for the rest of my life. You are doing this for me. Here we are, poor and without status, running the risk of a scandalous affair, but still, you want me.”

  “You’re not helping,” she said.

Mir tried a different tactic then, “Babette, my sweet, beautiful human woman when I’m invited back into my house, I am going to run my hands up and down your soft body and give every centimeter of it the attention it deserves. I’m going to begin by kissing your plump pink lips until they are swollen with my attention, and then I will kiss and caress your neck, pulling your dress loose to reveal your breasts. I’m going to enjoy sucking on each one until they stand tall and wanting, exposed in the air. Then I will pull your dress lower, revealing your furry vulva, and I’ll run my hands through your fur there. Then I will kiss and lick your legs, from your ankles to your thighs, making you shiver with delight, and then finally, I will kiss and lick your clitoris until you come so hard you will see black.” He paused and then added, seeing she was almost ready to come now, “I only wish now I could stick my hand inside your dress and touch your nipple. I would pinch it just a little bit and then caress it because we are in a very public place. Then I would reach my hand up your skirt and run my finger down your vulva and move your labia gently back and forth, while I searched for your clitoris, all the while, being so aroused myself that our poverty has brought us to this public place to do this forbidden thing we are doing.”

“It’s wildly forbidden,” Babette admitted breathlessly, but she wasn’t talking about what he was talking about. She was referring to doing this in public, which by Alliance standards was terrible but not nearly as bad as what he was referring to, which was entertaining a relationship together because he had no House and the punishment would be high for both of them if anyone found out.

Mir saw Babette stiffen and go absolutely motionless, “That’s it, come for me, Babette. I want your commitment to me. I want you to wait. When you come you must say my name, ‘Mir of no House.’”

“What?” Babette could hardly think, the little robot was providing so much pleasure right now. Hearing him was like trying to understand someone through a thunderstorm.

“When you orgasm, say my name.”

Babette just nodded thinking, Ridiculous Alliance People, and then she came so hard and barely whispered out the words, “Mir of no house.”

He took her hand quickly and replied, “Babette of House Human.”

Then both of their necklaces when ice cold under their clothing.

Babette put a hand up to hers, “What’s that now?”

Mir let go of her hand as people were beginning to stare, “I’ll explain later. Please put your hand down.”

Babette did and then gave him a look, she felt strange. She couldn
t believe she had just done that.

Mir noticed her expression and said, “Don’t feel anything but joy. You have brought me a tremendous amount of happiness and hope today. We will be married and look back on this day and laugh and only remember it as romantic.”

  “Was it romantic?” Babette questioned.

“Of course, it was,” Mir assured her. “Don’t you think it was?”

“I don’t know,” Babette said and wondered if it was sexy what they, no she, just did or if it was embarrassing or what. She didn’t have an answer right now. After a minute of silence, Babette wanted to change the subject, “I’ve only one more thing to discuss with you before we part, and maybe I should have told you this before, but I am selfish sometimes.”

“Oh?” Mir wondered what they possibly could have left to discuss. He assumed quickly it must be a human issue.

“I would want fidelity in a marriage. I’m not like Captain Kara.”

  “Of course.”

“Of course?” Babette was surprised by his answer. She was under the assumption that all Alliance people slept with slave artists on one time or another.

“Yes, of course,” Mir assured her.

“That’s it? But I heard that many men would never agree to such a thing.”

“Oh, but Babette, what do you know of the slave class marital customs?” He smiled at her and resisted touching her face in a gesture that was reserved for married or courting couples.

“Nothing,” she replied. All human women had been brought over as maximum class. She only had learned about maximum class customs as Madame Bai had told her that they were the only cultural norms they needed to know.

“Exactly. Every class has their own customs. And of course, the maximum class doesn’t want human women to know what the other classes do either. They want to present their Alliance to you. The maximum class Alliance filled with hypocrisies and slave artists…” he trailed off.
