Then Max did what I thought he never would, he finally divined. As fate would have it, we had been paired up for training. Max hadn’t frozen over like I had, hadn't shut off emotionally. His face lit up when he saw me, and in his mind, all was forgiven in an instant.

We've known each other for a long time, and now he is here. I may not want to face him or deal with us, but I have no choice. This is it, now or never.

Where to start? I guess from the beginning.

Max agreed to accompany me on two day pass, and we were transported to a Divinity owned beach house right in front of a private beach. Perfect.

Even though we’d been training together daily for some time, I had major anxiety about the weekend. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly the cause, but it was some sort of mixture between knowing that two days wasn’t enough to make such a big decision, knowing that Max was already dead set on switching trainers, and some left over trauma from having had my ass kicked by cartel members a few short days earlier. Besides, the training side is one thing. It’s my job and I always remain professional. But it’d been a while since I’d done anything on the personal side of life.

If Max was feeling any similar trepidation, I couldn’t tell. He brought along a case of beer, a bottle, and a small backpack with a few changes of clothes.

“I see you brought your booze along, as always.” I said.

“Ugh, yeah. Two day pass on a beach. I figure there’s at least a decent chance we end up in a fight or you run off with some gray haired retiree. I’ll need something to do.” he said. I stared back at him, unsure if he was making a joke or relaying his actual strategy.

“Are you an alcoholic? Like really.” I asked.

“I’m an alcoholic. Like really.” he didn’t even look up. Two seconds later, the crack of a can. “And it’s almost noon.” Max took himself, and his beer out on the back porch and had a seat. I followed behind.

“Ever thought about giving it up?” I asked.

“Nope. I’m a ten. Will be dead soon anyway, as you well know. Want one?” he extended a beer in my direction, to which I declined. Drinking at 11:45 is not what I had in mind for my two day vacation. “Suit yourself.”

“I brought you along for a reason.”

“You didn’t bring me along. You invited me, and I accepted.” he threw back his head, and swallowed several hefty gulps of domestic beer.

“Well, I invited you for a reason.” I said.

“Thanks.” he raised his glass before taking another long chug. “Should be a good time.”

“Yeah.” all of a sudden, I felt the anxiety again. Max had checked out, and wasn’t the type to open back up once he had given up on something. It was the first time I ever felt that he had given up on the idea of us, right at the same time I came back around to the possibility.

Kynsey invited me to the beach. Why not? Just because I don’t like the way the story ends doesn’t mean we can’t have a final weekend to pay homage to the journey. Known each other for a long time, and our connection helped get me where I am. I always try to remind myself that misplaced expectations are no ones fault but my own.

The training here is fun but mentally taxing. I will never say no to a chance to escape for a few days and pound some beers.

Something seemed off about Kynsey when we showed up, not that it’s any of my business. I’d be shaken up too after what happened to her. My only real complaint is the private beach. Sure, it’s beautiful, but there are no girls at a private beach. On the other hand, I don’t think I could take it if Kynsey played that game either. So whatever, figure I’ll treat it like a spa getaway or something.

Stay tuned for the second installment of The Divinity!
