  Epilogue

Special Agent Jack Benton stood and paid the diner’s check. Breakfast was over and it was time to head to Boston Police Department’s downtown precinct, homicide unit. He was nervous, and Deming was picking up on it.

“Now that I’m in town, I have some people I’d like to check in with,” she said, “if you wouldn’t mind, that is. I haven’t been back in Boston for a while.” She shrugged, looking uncomfortable. “Gilroy is already on his way over to the precinct, but I’m thinking Modena will be a while. He and Charlotte have a lot to discuss. I’ll meet up with the team early afternoon, if that’s okay. I’ll take a cab.”

Jack nodded. “Sure.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys. “There are a few things I need to iron out when I get there anyway. Probably best if you give me time to do that before the team jumps into the new case.”

“You’ve been keeping details close to the vest on this one,” she said. “Should I be worried?”

“Serial killer. We should all be worried.”

Deming nodded, shoulders sagged. “I hate serial killers.”

He walked with her out of the diner. “This one is…complicated, Deming, so get back as soon as you can, all right?”

“I promise.” Then she was off, hailing a cab.

Jack looked left and right, a stranger in a strange land. No one was looking for him in this town, because one year ago, it had been his picture in the obituaries. With no living family, coming “back to life” seemed moot. The only people that did know he lived were his team members. His task force. And, of course, his supervisor, the Special Agent in Charge. They were all that mattered, or so he’d thought as of yesterday, when he’d gotten the call.

His ex-partner, Special Agent Hannah Cambridge, thought he was dead.

Jack was still reeling from that bombshell. When he’d taken the Coppola Syndicate undercover assignment, it was a promotion, and gave him team leader status over a task force. The promotion required him to “die” and take on a new identify. Who wouldn’t jump at that opportunity? He did. Things had happened fast, so he’d asked his Special Agent in Charge to tell Hannah the news. Only he didn’t, unaware that his partner, Hannah, was more than just a partner.

She was his lover. They’d kept it quiet, not wanting to cause gossip.

So, Hannah spent the last year believing him dead. Murdered. She went to his wake, for heaven’s sake.

Sure, their relationship had always been rocky, and this year he’d suspected Hannah had been glad to see the back side of him, but this news changed everything. Jack never intended for Hannah to believe he’d died, but now that he’d arrive in Boston, Lazarus arisen from the grave, what was he supposed to tell her?

She had a temper, and a serial killer wanted her dead, so… He sighed. He’d save her, but first he had to convince her not to kill him.
