“How are you?” he said.
Kate smiled, “Good,” she said.
Orion’s question was a mere formality. He knew exactly what Kate was up to. In fact, he made it a point to ensure that she was well. Now that he couldn’t be the most powerful man in Egalia (well at least not openly), he had to settle for overprotective brother and father. Speaking of which, Ren was so much harder to track. His journey through the Alps was proving a mountainous task for his men.
The pair chatted comfortably, talking about everything and nothing all at once as they enjoyed each other’s company.
“What are you thinking about?” Orion said midway through their conversation. He noticed that Kate seemed to be a little distracted.
“Nothing,” Kate said, but she stifled a cheeky grin.
“Tell me,” Orion said, his eyes narrowed.
“Relax,” Kate said, as she spied Orion’s face, “Don’t be so suspicious! I was just reminiscing about those times where I would be the one getting visits from you and Billion.”
Kate laughed. “Isn’t it ironic? The captive and captor have swapped places! Who knew such a day would come!”
Orion smiled but the smile didn’t meet his eyes. He felt bad about what he had done to Kate.
“Don’t look so serious,” Kate said, “I’m obviously fine now if I can laugh about it!” she said.
Kate looked at Orion fondly. She no longer bore any ill will or resentment towards him for the time she spent locked up.
She felt the lightest she ever felt in her life, unburdened by her past. Replacing all the weight on her shoulders was the knowledge that she had gained a brother.
