The little girl nodded.
“Do you have any questions?”
Mandy thought for a moment. “Mom,” she said, “can I have a cookie?”
Cheryl wiped a tear from her face and smiled at her child. “Mandy,” she said, “you may have two cookies.”
Martha McGill watched her great granddaughter walk to the house after feeding the fish as if viewing the child from a great height. She felt a little sorry at not having been able to say goodbye to Mandy but, in the overall scheme of things, it wasn’t really necessary. After all, they both had more important things to do.
