  Joshua - March

“Hey, watch it,” the cabbie yells as we swerve, narrowly missing a woman who has just darted into the road in front of us. His hands grip the worn leather steering wheel tightly as he tries to regain control of the vehicle. I close my eyes and hold onto the door handle and the headrest of the seat in front of me while saying a silent prayer in my head.

The cab skids to a slushy halt, causing my lungs to release the air they’d been holding hostage. I suck in and breathe out a sigh of relief that we didn’t hit the rouge women. The familiar cross-street, lined with shops, was busy despite the storm. Why anyone was out in this weather was beyond me.

We are only a block away from my destination and I let out another sign of relief that I have arrived. Home. I hadn’t been home in ages. Two months and one week to be exact. I couldn’t wait to get back and surprise Julia with my early return. I’d almost let it slip yesterday when we FaceTimed, but thankfully, I caught myself before I said too much.

My three-month stay in a small coastal town in Guatemala came to an early end. With all the extra hands on deck, we were able to complete the new build three weeks early. My parents ran a non-profit whose main focus was helping to either rebuild areas destroyed by disasters or service underprivileged villages. Guatemala was the country chosen this year, and I hadn’t been able to wait to get my hands on the project. This one hit close to home since we were building a school. The lack of education there was polarizing. Every day, I was grateful that I was able to give them something every kid in the world should have access to.

The only issue with my extended absence was that Julia wasn’t keen on the idea of me leaving. I invited her, of course, but her eyes nearly bugged out of her head at the suggestion. I can hear her voice now: “Joshua, I can’t believe you’d even suggest that. Look at me. I’d stick out like a sore thumb.” She wasn’t lying. She was a typical blonde bombshell, with legs for days, big fake tits, and the lips to match. “And I certainly wouldn’t want to be dirty and sweaty everyday… They don’t even have air conditioning there. It’s never going to happen,” she said with a scowl.

I knew she’d never go for it, but you know how women are—If I hadn't invited her, I’d be the biggest prick ever. So even though the conversation wasted my time, and hers, we still had to have it.

My eyes fix on the metal high rise in front of me. I can barely make out the top of the building because the wind is blowing the snow around so aggressively. It looks like a snow globe you’d find in a souvenir shop in downtown New York once it’s been shaken to bits.

I shift my weight in the seat as I reach into my back pocket, grabbing my wallet so I can pay the cabbie. The faster I pay, the faster I can get inside my building and, hopefully, into Julia, I think with a devious smile. God knows it’s been too long and my hand isn’t doing it for me anymore. There are only so many times a man wants to jerk off and I was craving the real thing.

I gather up the fare and a big tip. He may not have been the best driver, but anyone who works in these unsightly conditions should get a little something extra. I pay him and grab the door handle.

“Hey, ya sure you counted right? You only owe me $18.72. I got...” He shuffles the money in his hands to count it. “There's $70 bucks here.” His voice is high and his eyes are bulging out of his head.

I feel the sides of my lips rising. “Yes. It's correct. Enjoy your night. And drive safe,” I order.

The door opens with a squeak. I grab my bag from beside me and step out, narrowly missing a large slush puddle. The wind howls and hits my face so hard a tear falls down my cheek. I curse out loud.

I went from tropical weather to a winter wonderland, and if my shriveled-up balls are any indicator, I think it’s fair to say I am not accustomed to living in the north anymore.

I walk as fast as I can to the front of the building, dodging and hopping over black ice and slush puddles. When the sliding doors open, I’m met by an insatiable heat. It hits my frozen face like a warm shower, invading me, and I stay still for a moment to allow my bones to defrost. The doors try, unsuccessfully, to shut on me, but on the third attempt, I take the cue to hurry the hell up and get upstairs. The heat feels great, but I am dying to see the look on Julia’s face when she sees I’m home early.

The elevator doors open, and when I step inside, I’m met by my reflection. I take some time to give myself a once over. I didn't have the luxuries I am used to in Guatemala, and honestly, I wasn't interested in keeping up with appearances. My focus was on the job at hand. But, damn, did I look different. My normal five 0’ clock shadow was now a full-grown beard. My hair was no longer well-kept but shaggy, and my tan skin had taken on a dark golden hue.

I look like a sexy mountain man, I think and let out a small laugh. I’m not so sure Julia will feel the same. She’s into the clean-cut, sophisticated look, and at the moment, that’s not me. She’s a nice girl when you get to know her, but she does come off superficial and full of herself at first. It isn’t her fault. She just grew up too privileged. Her mom and dad bent over backward to give her everything she wanted, and I quickly discovered she wasn’t used to hearing the word “no.”

When I first met her at a friend's party, I thought she was hot, but she looked high maintenance. Louis Vuitton bag, short tight dress, red bottom heels. Not my type. I typically went for the jeans and t-shirt girls because of what my lifestyle was like with the foundation. But when she opened her mouth and I heard her speak about what she did for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, I was like, “She’s the one.”

The elevator dings, alerting me that I’m at my floor. I take one last glance in the mirror and attempt to tousle my hair into place. I’m just fooling myself. This is the best it’s going to get right now. She’ll have to be grateful that I at least brush
ed my teeth on the flight.

My anticipation builds as I approach the apartment, and my stomach twists with excitement. I grab the key from my pocket and place it into the hole, turning the knob slowly and quietly. It’s late, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she were sleeping. Thinking of her in bed makes my mind jump to the last time we made love. No, while there was love between us, that night was pure, unadulterated fucking. My dick stirs in my pants at the thought.

The night before I left for my trip, she pranced into the bedroom, fresh out of the shower, a tiny white towel barely covering her body. “Ooops,” she said as the towel casually fell to her feet, exposing all of her body to me. Biting her lip, she stalked toward me, making sure to twitch her hips with every step. “Do you like what you see?” she said while slowly trailing her fingers up her abdomen until she captured her large tits in her hands, pinching at her nipples.

  “Fuck yes.”

“I’m going to leave you with something memorable. I know you'll go crazy there without me. I hope you’ll forgive me for not going.” She pouted her lips at me; then they turned upward into a devious smirk.

My hand caressed my quickly growing cock. “Why don’t you show me how much you’ll miss me,” I said to her while pumping myself in my hand.

She sauntered the rest of the way to me and climbed onto the bed, one hand caressing her pussy while the other hand made its way to her mouth. “I’m going to suck you just like this,” she said while taking three fingers into her wet mouth.

A small grown escaped my lips and I pulled her on top of me.

She rode me like a bull at the rodeo that night. The memory of her already has me growing in my pants. After it was over, she said it was my parting gift. Now that I’m back I’m ready to collect my welcome home gift.

The door opens with a creak. I don’t see her and the lights have been turned off. I put my bags down and head for the fridge to grab a drink. I’m freaking parched from the flight. I stop mid-gulp, thinking I hear a male’s voice. My head cocks to the side so I can listen closely, but I don't hear anything anymore. Hm. She probably fell asleep with the TV on, I think as I cap my drink and move toward the bedroom.

My hand brushes the knob as I hear her release a moan from the other side of the door. I melt to the wall while desire builds in me. My mouth turns up into a full-blown grin because I know I can ease the longing she’s feeling by surprising her with myself and my cock. Catching her touching herself has always been a fantasy of mine, and not only am I getting that, but I‘m also about to screw her senseless.

I put my hand on my ever-growing hardness and rub a few times over my pants. My hand turns the knob, and when the door opens, the smile I am wearing dissolves immediately.

It’s dark but I can make out Julia’s naked body writhing and another body hidden under a sheet between her legs. My vision blurs and I taste bile, which is slowly making its way up my throat.

“What the fuck.” My voice sounds small coming out of my tightened and sickened throat.

I clear my throat and try again. “What.The.Fuck!” I shout each word.

My hands go to my hair. I pull it with all my strength; the searing pain is nothing compared to the ache I feel in my heart.

She glances over to me and screams, grabbing the blanket and covering her nakedness.

Oh, now’s the time for modesty, Julia? I ask, dumbfounded. I wonder if she recognizes me with my new scraggly look, but she’s a smart girl and realization of who I am must hit her because her look turns more terrified—not of me, but terrified that she’s been caught.

“What are you d-d-doing here?” she stutters, looking like a deer caught in a symphony of headlights.

“What am I doing here?” I point to myself. “...In my apartment?”

My feet feel like they are weighted down by cement blocks. I keep trying to take a step toward her but they are refusing to move. I blink hard, squeezing my lids together and opening them again. I make sure what I'm seeing is real and not some mirage from my jet lag. My teeth grind together, making a squeaking noise, and my lips form a thin line.

The audacity of her asking me what I’m doing here.

“What the hell are you doing? Who the fuck is that?”

Julia faces the mystery man and starts to shake. I can’t tell if she’s crying or just shaking from fear. I squint, trying to get a better look at the guy from the bits of him that are exposed.

That’s when I recognize the tattoo on his shoulder.

Dread hits me. I feel even sicker now. My head starts to spin as my body falls to the right. I’m thankful for the wall that catches and holds me up.

No. No. No. My head is incessantly shaking.

What I’m seeing can’t be real. My hands are curled into tight fists. He turns to face me, still slightly covered with the sheet. My eyes focus on his eyes and everything stops.

My best friend, the guy I’ve trusted for eight years, who’s been like a brother to me, is sleeping with Julia.

  My Julia.

I want to ask how long this has been going on, but my brain knows I can’t handle any more information. I don’t remember walking out, but I find myself at the front door. I take the keys from my pocket just as Julia rushes down the hallway toward me, wrapped in the damn sheet. I turn my back toward her. I refuse to look at her.

“I’m leaving. When I get back, I expect all your shit to be gone.”

She’s in hysterics now. “Please, Joshey,” she begs. “It’s not what you think.”

If she’s expecting any sort of sympathy or understanding from me with these crocodile tears, she's out of her damn mind. If she only knew about all the women I turned down while I was away… and I did it because I’m a loyal guy. Now, I feel like the biggest fool. She clearly wasn’t waiting for me to get her off, and there I was, jerking my dick for months while she was here sleeping with my best friend.

I head for the elevator, barely bothering to close the door behind me. Mark comes running down the hallway after me. I can hear the pitter-patter of his feet as they connect to the wood floorboards. I turn to look at him. His pants are on and he hurriedly zips up and fastens the button. My head shakes in disbelief and disappointment.

“Man, listen, it just happened... It wasn’t planned,” he tries to explain.

I slump over, bending my legs and resting my hands on my knees. Isn’t that what everyone says in the movies when they get caught cheating? Can no one come up with something more original? The cliché my life has quickly turned into makes me laugh. I can’t help it. And once I’ve started the sound continues to fall from my mouth.

  I think I’m losing it.

I sit back up and rub my hand over my face. My brain is fried from the mental exhaustion they’ve just put me through and I struggle to think straight.

“I’m s-s-sorry. We didn’t mean to hurt you,” Julia says through tears, coming up to stand beside my no-longer best friend.

That “we” hits me hard, and my eyes close. I shiver even though my body feels hot. My hands grip my luggage so tightly I look down to see the blood has drained from my fingers and they are now stark white.

I look at the both of them and let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. I need to be very clear, and to do that, I need to stabilize my breathing. They are standing side-by-side, almost touching, and seeing their physical closeness makes me recoil.

“I’m going to say this once.” I hold up one finger. “I’ll give you three days to get your shit and get out.” I turn away from them as the doors of the elevator open, and with my back to them, I add, “Oh, and in case it wasn’t obvious, you’re both dead to me.”

  Taylor - May

My hand raises to shield my eyes from the light that is filtering in through the window. I guess this means I surprised myself and got some sleep. It must have happened somewhere between sobbing and wiping snot from my face with my conveniently placed tissue, which also happened to be my shirt sleeve.

  My waist len
gth hair must have wrapped around my arms in my sleep, and as I try to move I am restricted, like I have been buckled into a straight jacket. “Ugh,” I let out a guttural noise. I loosen the hair from my left arm and rustle the rest free as I reach for an elastic. I normally braid my hair before bed to prevent this from happening, but given the circumstances of yesterday, doing anything besides bawling my eyes out wasn’t on my mind.

I gather the messy and tangled mane on the top of my head and twist the elastic three times, not caring which direction or angle it’s going. I’m sure I have a bird's nest atop my head, but I can’t bring myself to care. This will most likely be my go-to style for the following wallow week I’m allowing myself—a week of eating my weight in snacks and watching horror films to lessen the unfairness of the world.

I sit up in bed, expecting my head to pound, but there’s just a dull ache behind my eyes. I let out a sigh as my hands caress my swollen and sore eyes and the realization of what happened last night fully sinks in.

When Tristan called me last night, I thought he’d dispel the rumor that had been making the rounds at school. The one I discovered wasn’t actually a rumor after alI. I waited a whole week for him to mention something, anything, to me, but in typical Tristan fashion he avoided it, acting like his normal self, walking me to class and kissing me. But something was definitely amiss.

I never would have thought the Tristan I knew was capable of cheating. Maybe he was frustrated because we weren’t having sex. I hadn’t exactly put it out there that I wanted to do it, but I beat around the bush enough. You’d think the guy could take a hint. Apparently not, since he decided to get his rocks off with someone else.

I fell for Tristan because he was lighthearted and fun, and he went out of his way to help people whenever he got the chance. Seeing him help out at homeless shelters and volunteer as a big brother was heart porn for me. It made him even more attractive, not that he needed help in the department. His eyes alone were an undiscovered wonder of the world.
