“Good. That’s sorted that.” the Emperor said. “Just remember to play down any suggestions of any romantic involvement at this stage, at least until we see which way the wind is blowing at the Royal Palace on Brython. Do you have any other questions, Captain?”

“Not really, Your Majesty. I think we’ve covered everything that’s likely to be relevant to me,” he replied.

The Emperor studied him for a moment. Then he turned to his wife and they exchanged a moment of some sort of unvoiced communication, something Gizel had seen them do regularly over the years. This was a trait that she could already feel she and Karvon were developing as well, even this early into their relationship. The Emperor turned back and spoke to Karvon once more.

“We are placing a lot of trust in you, Karvon,” He said, using Karvon’s first name, which he had not previously done in front of other people, Gizel had noticed.

He waved a hand at Gizel.

“She’s still our little girl, in here,” he said patting his chest above his heart. “It’s hard for us to accept she’s all grown-up, but we’ve seen the way you two are when you are together and we have to accept that she is old enough to love and be loved. So, you better look after her, young man.”

And he stood and offered his hand to Karvon who likewise stood and shook the Emperor’s proffered hand.
