Prologue
Pain
The roar of the fraise vibrated in my skull. Pain flooded my senses until I thought I was going insane. It was a curse to be an Alien Breed because it was almost impossible to pass out through pain. I was strapped to the operating table, my head in a metal cage that made any movement impossible. There was nothing I could do but hold out helplessly. There was a kind of gag in my mouth to keep me from biting off my tongue, but it also took away any possibility of screaming out my pain. Dr. Muller put the fraise aside, a contented expression on her face. She picked up a computer chip that she wanted to plant in my brain, as she had explained to me before. It was supposed to record my brain activity and could also give commands to my brain that were activated by Dr. Muller's voice. According to Dr. Muller, I was to stay a week with my skull open, as long as the test with the chip lasted, before it was removed and my skull closed again.
"So – that looks quite good after all," Dr. Muller explained, pleased. She took no notice of my pain. The only thing that mattered to her was her work.
After she had finished the operation, a kind of helmet was put on my head to protect the open skull. The pain had subsided a little since the surgery was finished, but it was still strong enough to keep me in agony. My shackles were loosened, the gag removed and Dr. Muller took a small device from a stand.
"Sit up!" She spoke into the device.
Although I did nothing myself, my body sat up. I got goose bumps when I realized what people could do with a technology like this. They had made us stronger and more resistant than them, and with this chip they could make us slaves, following every order, whether we wanted it or not.
"It actually works! Good work, Dr. Muller," praised one of the assistants.
"Of course it works," replied Dr. Muller, pissed off that the man had even questioned it. "Give him the knife!"
"Do you really think it's a good idea to put a weapon in his hand? He could..."
"Do what I tell you!"
The assistant took a knife from a drawer and handed it to me. I calculated whether I would be able to take Dr. Muller and the assistant out before they could use the device or trigger the alarm. I could then go looking for my son and escape with him. The temptation was great, but I had no idea how I would make it out off this heavily guarded facility with a little boy and if I failed, my son would have to pay for it.
Before I could make a decision, Dr. Muller spoke again into the small device.
"Stab the knife into your thigh!"
My hand obeyed her order, although I fought against it. A sharp pain made me cry out...
"Pain! Pain, wake up! Pain!"
I was startled from the nightmare and saw Julia's worried face above me. I was safe. Dr. Muller was on death row and no one would ever experiment on me again.
"It was just a dream," Julia assured and hugged me. Only now did I notice that I was still trembling all over my body. "It was just a dream. Everything’s alright!"
Chapter 1
Pain
West-Colony, Eden
April 28, 2033 / 03:26 p.m. local time
The cell door opened, and I froze. My pain-stricken body made it impossible for me to sleep and I had been awake since I had been brought back. What could my tormentors want with me now? I didn’t even have the strength to turn around to them, but I heard their steps come closer.
"Put him on the roll bed," ordered Dr. Muller’s voice. How much I hated this evil bitch. She was by far the worst of them.
Hands grabbed my shoulders and legs and I was lifted up. I screamed when the pain became unbearable due to the movement. I was hoisted onto the roll bed and I saw Dr. Muller bend over me to shine a lamp into my pupils.
"Be happy, boy," she said in a cheery mood. "We're testing a new formula today and if it works, your fractures will heal all by themselves."
I wanted to put my hands around her neck and squeeze until her eyes popped out of her head, but my arms and hands were broken several times, my left hand completely smashed. I was as helpless as a baby. As helpless as my son, the only reason I didn't fight my tormentors. If I didn't do what they said, they would torture him. The thought of the boy was the only thing that kept me alive, gave me the strength to hold on. Sometimes, I dreamed of a life with my son in freedom. I didn’t even have a clue what this freedom would look like. What was outside these walls? When I was in the treatment room, I could look through the window. There were more buildings and a high wall. I couldn't see what was behind it.
The two helpers of Dr. Muller pushed me out of my cell. At least Dr. Muller didn't seem to want to cause me any more pain today. I hoped that this new formula would really heal my fractures. If I could only be free of pain for one day, so that I could sleep a little. I was so tired. If it weren't for my son, I would like to close my eyes and fall asleep forever. Death was a temptation that became harder to resist with each new experiment.
"Is everything all right with you?" Sturdy's voice broke through the memory.
I turned to him and met his worried eyes.
"Yes – I am okay," I assured him. "I was only ... in thoughts."
"We should have a beer together tonight," Sturdy suggested. "What do you think?"
I shrugged my shoulders.
"Why not?" I agreed half-heartedly. Sturdy wanted to help me, like so many of my friends, but I was a loner. I knew that I should let the past rest. It was hard for me to do that.
"I know what would do you good," Sturdy said.
I just looked at him and knew that my face wasn't exactly enthusiastic.
"What you need is a female!"
I shook my head resolutely.
"No, that is not for me."
"Why not?"
"First of all I am not a good partner and secondly I don't want a female anymore. Not after ... Oh! Forget it!"
"Not after what?"
Not after the death of my mate. We had been put together to breed. Against all odds, my mate had become pregnant. I had felt responsible for her, a trait innate to all Alien Breeds. Even though we would never have become mates under normal circumstances, the time we spent together in my cell and the pregn
ancy had welded us together. And I felt so guilty, so guilty for her death.
I awoke because my mate writhed in pain next to me. Alarmed I sat up.
"What is it? Are you in pain?"
"What do you think?" She spat at me and doubled up again.
I sat there, helpless, staring down at her and trying to pull her into my arms, but she pushed me aside.
"It is all your fault. You put this damn child in me! You should have refused. Now I ... Arrrgh!
I jumped up and ran to the cell door to pound against it.
"HEY!" I yelled. "HEEEEY!"
Steps approached the cell door!
"What is it, you damn animal?" Sounded the angry voice of a guard. "Be quiet, or we'll get Dr. Muller!"
"My mate! She is in terrible pain," I shouted desperately. "Please," I begged. "Please help her!"
"Looks like the bitch starts whelping," I heard a second guard say, then both laughed and their steps moved away.
Beside myself, I pounded against the door over and over.
"Come back! You damn bastards! Come back!"
After an apparent eternity I heard voices and footsteps.
"Hold on," I said to my mate. She lay rolled up on the bed and groaned. Her skin had taken on an unhealthy looking grey color.
"Please, hold on!"
The steps stopped in front of the door.
"Step back from the door or you'll regret it," the guard's voice sounded.
"Okay," I shouted and stepped back a few steps.
The door was opened and four guards came in with a rolling bed. Two pushed the bed, the other two had their stun guns pointed at me.
"Back off further," said one and waved his rifle in front of my face. I walked backwards until I had the wall in my back.
My mate was hoisted onto the roll bed and pushed out of the cell, then the other two guards pulled back and locked the door behind them. I was alone and worried about what would happen to my mate and the child.
I didn't hear anything for three days. Guards came and pushed my food through the flap, but they didn't answer any of my questions. I was ready to commit murder, but no one opened the damn door. Then, on the fourth day, I heard footsteps. It was only an hour ago that I had been brought food. What did they want now? Would I finally hear news from my mate and the child?
"Back away from the door!"
"What about my mate?" I asked to know.
"Go back, or we kill the child!"
My heart stopped for a moment. The child? My child? Then my mate had really made it? Wouldn't she be brought back to me, now that we had given them what they wanted?
"Step back! Last warning!"
"Okay," I shouted. "I step back. Don't hurt the child!"
I withdrew to my sleeping place and heard the door open. Two guards accompanied Dr. Muller, who held a baby wrapped in a blanket in her hands. I felt tears begin to roll down my cheeks. My child. I wanted to hold it in my arms, look at its tiny face. But I stopped where I was for fear they would do something to the child.
"Congratulations," Dr. Muller said. "You have a son. We are very pleased with you."
"May ... May I hold him – please?" I asked hopefully.
Dr. Muller shook her head and anger and disappointment brought tears to my eyes again. I wanted to tear my child out of this witch's arms and run away. But I wouldn't make it far, probably not even out of the damn cell. I wasn’t allowed to endanger my son's life.
"Please. I promise that I will not try anything," I tried again.
"That’s not possible. You have seen your son and now you know that he exists. If you behave well and don't make us any problems, then he can live and we take good care of him. If you make trouble for us, your son will atone for it. – Do we understand each other?"
Anger and rage seized me, and only the thought of my child held me back from tearing the bitch's throat open. My hands clenched into fists, but somehow I managed to get myself under control.
"Can I at least see him?" I growled.
Dr. Muller nodded and pushed the blanket a little to the side so that I could see the rosy face. My heart squeezed. It hurt so much not to be able to hold my child, not even touch it. It went against all my instincts to stay put.
"How do I know that you keep your word and that my son is well?" I asked.
"We will bring him to you once a week."
"Where is my mate?"
"She didn’t survive the birth," Dr. Muller replied without any emotion.
"You damn bastards!" I shouted beside myself and forgot every good resolution to be cooperative. I stormed forward and came to an abrupt halt when one of the guards held a gun to my son's temple.
"Back off!" The guard yelled at me.
Slowly, I moved backwards. Pain, anger and despair gnawed at me. And this damn helplessness. They’d got what they wanted. An Alien Breed baby. And they had more power over me than ever before. Even if I could get a chance to escape, I couldn't use it without putting my child in danger. The realization literally tore the floor under my feet away and I sank backwards onto my sleeping place.
"Tomorrow we start a new experiment and I expect you to cooperate. Now you know what's at stake," said Dr. Muller and left the room, followed by the guards.
"Pain?"
I shook off the memory and met the worried look of my friend.
"I must..." I began and touched my forehead. „... go.
Before Sturdy could reply anything, I turned on my heel and hurried away. I walked through the rows of houses to the end of the settlement. There I turned onto the path that led into the jungle. I wanted to be alone – I didn't want to see anyone. Guilt! All I felt was guilt – grief and anger.
Julia
I looked up from the plants I had studied when I heard footsteps on the path. Not far from me, Pain rushed by without noticing me. He looked as if a monster was after him. Since I learned about his past, I had to think about him a lot. He wasn't exactly a talkative guy, but he had once shown me sweet monkey-like animals called bayakas. I had a little crush on Pain, but he didn't exactly make it easy for me to get to know him. We had exchanged a few words a few times, but he was always quiet, almost reserved. I knew he was a loner, and one who carried a lot of mental garbage from his terrible past. I would probably do better to forget him, but that was easier said than done.
Without thinking about what I was doing, I stood up and followed Pain. Maybe he needed someone to talk to. It wasn’t good to deal with such a trauma alone, but as I had learned from my friend Jessie, he refused to talk to a therapist.
It took me a while to catch up with Pain. He was obviously in quite a hurry. Suddenly he stopped and turned around to me.
"What are you doing here?" He barked angrily. "You shouldn't run into the forest alone. There are many dangerous animals here, not to speak of the Jinggs. If you need a companion for your tours, you should turn to Sturdy or Steel. They'll be happy to show you around."
Those were more words than I had ever heard from his mouth before. He seemed angry and upset. His brown eyes sparkled at me and his whole body seemed tense, as if he was about to explode.
"I saw you on the path and thought..." I began miserably.
"Thought what? That you could stalk me?"
"You don't have to be so mean," I countered, upset and hurt. "I saw that you were running away from something and thought that you could use someone to talk to."
"I don't need anyone!"
"Fine," I huffed, and turned around, angrily wiping off the tears that rolled out of my eyes.
"I'll bring you back," grumbled Pain and came after me.
"Thank you, but I DON’T NEED ANYONE," I replied angrily.
But Pain didn’t listen. He followed me all the way back to the settlement.
"Stay in the damn village, where you are safe, or get a damn guard," he said grimly as the way opened to the main road.
I turned to him.
"Don't worry! I will certainly not bother you again!"
"Good!"
"Asshole," I mumbled as I walked the way past the clubhouse. "Fucking asshole!"
Pain
I stared after Julia as she stomped angrily along the way. She was hurt. I had seen the tears in her eyes. It was better if she kept her distance from me. Better for her and better for me. So it shouldn’t bother me that I had hurt her – that would keep her away from me. But for some reason I didn't want her to cry and certainly not because of me. Meeting her in the middle of the jungle had made me angry for two reasons. First, I had wanted to be alone with my thoughts, and second, she had put herself in danger. The thought of what could have happened to her gave me a strange feeling in my chest. She could have fallen into the hands of the Jinggs, or been attacked by a wild animal. It wasn't safe to be alone, and a weak female at that, in those woods. In the settlement there were guards running their rounds and the dogs sounding the alarm when someone or something approached, and there were high fences making it difficult for wild animals to sneak into the village.
With a sigh I turned away and ran back into the forest. I’d had enough of unwanted company. Sometimes I stayed away for several days. It was a good feeling to move freely. I had spent so many years in my cell, imagining what it would be like to be free. The only rays of hope in my captivity had been the brief visits with my son.
"Tell me! What did you do last week?" I asked my son. He was now about four years old, but he didn't seem much older than a two-year-old. The doctors said he had a genetic defect and was worthless. They only let him live because they could use him as leverage to prevent me from rebelling against them.
