  About the Author

When Casimir reaches Brightgate, he isn't sure what to expect from the City of Monsters, though he's a monster himself. He definitely doesn't anticipate being attacked mere moments after arriving—or that he'd be rescued by Mikki, the city's rough-edged guardian angel.

He gets another unpleasant surprise in the form of ex-lover Jared, who instead of talking responds with violence, dead-set on exacting vengeance for the events that drove them apart. Given the way his visit is going, about the only thing Casimir is sure of is that the City of Monsters could very well be where he dies.

  Chapter One

Brightgate was a beautiful name for a town, Casimir thought. The name made him think of a shining gate opening, humans standing beyond it and smiling with open arms.

It was bitterly funny to him that Brightgate was now called the City of Monsters.

Nearly every city had monsters now, though. As Shakespeare had put it, "Hell is empty and all the devils are here." He couldn't remember the last time he'd traveled to a place and not met at least one "monster" like himself.

As he walked into the City of Monsters, he began to understand why Brightgate had the nickname above others. Just like every other city, Brightgate was devastated by the events that had blown the gates to hell (or wherever it was monsters had come from) open, some seventy years ago. Casimir had visited places where the decay had been peaceful—quiet, with crumbling buildings covered by vines and inhabited by animals. The Earth taking over what humans had left.

In Brightgate, that wasn't the case. Buildings were falling apart, but many of them clearly had people living inside. Some had collapsed into piles of brick, metal, and twisted wiring. There were no streetlights; only flickering neon signs provided any way to see. Even the moon overhead was blocked out by smog.

The dark didn't bother Casimir—he could see as well as any nighttime predator. As he made his way through, he noticed eyes looking at him. Most weren't human; some glowed with a hellish green light. He nodded in their direction—close to, but not quite, a bow—and continued on his way. He wasn't going to tangle with demons. It only would end with him dying painfully.

As he walked on, he started to hear something. It was a disgusting, squelching noise, like fighting through deep mud. He turned and looked over his shoulder. At first, he saw nothing, but when he glanced back again, he found just what was making the noise.

He'd never seen a monster like it before. The size of a human torso, it was a nauseating roll of a fleshy, red mass. A crackle of energy, so dark that even Casimir could barely see it, surrounded its body as it floated through the air, closing in on him.

Casimir took a few steps back, putting distance between himself and the creature, and drew a gun from his coat pocket. He mentally ripped through all of the information he had about different monsters, but he had no idea what this thing was, or what would kill it. Most creatures could be hurt by bullets, though. With steady hands, he aimed at the center of the mass and fired. The shots easily went through its body and flew out the other end. The monster didn't seem to care, continuing to roll closer.

There was no point in wasting bullets; they were hard enough to come by. Stowing his pistol, Casimir pulled a knife from the sheath at his hip. He had a gut feeling that he shouldn't let the thing come this close to him, but the only alternative was to outrun it. And he had no idea where he would run to.

Once it was close, Casimir brought his knife up into the underside of where he guessed the thing's head would be. The knife passed through, and red flesh wrapped around his hand. He growled in pain as he felt his skin burning, and he pulled with all his might to free himself. Even with his vampiric strength, he lost his knife and found himself sitting down hard on the ground.

  "Move, stupid!"

Casimir had no time to see who gave the order, but he obeyed it, rolling as quickly as he could to one side. He looked up and in the same instant, a bright flash of light came from the balcony above. The fleshy creature burst into flame. It gave off a horrible smell as it burned and finally fell to the ground, where it lay quivering.

Panting, Casimir looked at his hand. It was bubbling and blackened, but it would hopefully be healed by the time he woke again. He looked around until he saw a tall, thin young man standing on a balcony. "Thank you," he called up.

"Either you're new here, or you're an idiot, walking around unarmed," the young man shouted back. "Everyone here knows enough to at least carry matches!"

Casimir shuddered. He would go up in flames just as quickly as the monster would. "I'm new here; I try not to be an idiot," he replied, giving the man a close-lipped smile.

"What the hell are you doing here?" was his immediate, suspicious question.

"I'm looking for a place to sleep. And I'm hungry," Casimir said, hoping his smile looked friendly.

The young man hung over the balcony rail, his long arms dangling. "Hungry for food, or something else?"

"Something else." Casimir admired the man's perception.

He rolled his dark eyes and lifted a hand to jerk a thumb back, over his own shoulder. "Thought so. Behind my building you'll find what you're looking for. But if you hurt any of them, you'll have to answer to me."

"I wouldn't dream of it," Casimir said. One on one, there would be no challenge, but the man knew the city. He could appear from anywhere and set Casimir on fire, like he had the flesh monster. Besides that, Casimir was never one for needlessly hurting people. Especially not since…

"We'll see." The young man disappeared into the shadows.

Casimir waited, but he never reappeared. Either he was a monster as well, or he just backed into a doorway. It didn't matter; he wasn't blocking Casimir's way and had even helped him.

He looked down at the pile of still-sizzling flesh, trying to find his knife, but it was impossible to see. Even with the creature dead, he didn't think it would be smart to put his hand anywhere near it.

Hiding his injured hand in the pocket of his coat, he walked in the direction the young man had pointed. He passed through a dark alley until his way was brightened by a white neon sign that spelled out the words: "Jewel Box." A beautiful young man was sitting out on the porch in a loose red robe and gave him an inviting smile.

Casimir grinned. This looked like exactly what he needed.

  Chapter Two

Casimir walked into the Jewel Box to the sound of tinkling charms. He was greeted before he even entered the foyer by a woman in a flashy red dress. Her f
ace was heavily made up and spoke of faded beauty.

"Welcome, sir," she said, smiling. "I'm Adeline, the owner of the Jewel Box, and I'll be pleased to take care of your needs. I have a wide array of appearances and genders and even a few monsters, if you're looking for something exotic."

Casimir bowed his head in return. "No, thank you, I'm looking for something human." He watched her reaction closely while he talked. "Gender doesn't matter to me, but I need to stress that I won't accept a child. I'd be happy to pay extra for them to give me a bath and allow me to sleep the night."

"That is not a problem at all, if you are indeed willing to pay extra," she replied. Adeline began to turn away, but Casimir stopped her by clearing his throat.

"There's one more thing." Casimir pushed his burned hand deeper into his pocket. "I'll need to take blood from them."

Adeline frowned and her hand went into her pocket. "How much blood?"

"Not nearly close to enough to make them pass out," he assured her.

She didn't look convinced. "I warn you, if you damage any of my boys or girls, there will be consequences."

Casimir almost smiled. He'd been threatened by two people already and hadn't even been in town an hour. That was unusual, even for him. "I promise, I have no intention of harming anyone here."

"As long as you don't, you're welcome here." Adeline looked thoughtful for a moment, then smoothed down her skirt. "Come with me."

As she led him down a hall, Casimir noted the decadent décor. Not done in a way that was overwhelming, but warm and lush, appealing to the senses. He ran his hand over the wallpaper, smiling a little at its satiny feel.

"There aren't a lot of places to stay here in town," Adeline said, glancing back at him. "I'd like to build small hotel myself, to have a more… classy place for visitors to stay. We get a lot of travelers, but not many that stay long."

Adeline opened a door and stood aside for him to enter. It was a small room, with the bathroom to one side, decorated in the sort of blues and greens that made Casimir feel like he was walking into the ocean. "She'll be along shortly," she said and closed the door behind him.

Casimir removed his coat and boots, draping the former over a plush velvet chair. He sat on top of it, sighing as he sank down. This normally wasn't his kind of place, but it was nice to feel pampered once in a while.

Just as his eyes were beginning to close, he heard the door opening softly. The girl that walked in was slim and lovely with a cascade of golden hair. Casimir said a silent thanks that she looked to be an adult—he had been offered children as young as eight, to his horror.

"Welcome," she said, her voice as pretty as her heart-shaped face. "My name is Beryl, and I'm happy to be of service to you. Our mistress says that you are here to be bathed and to rest."

"And for blood," he added, watching a flicker of fear pass in her dark blue eyes. "Don't worry, Beryl, I won't take much, and it shouldn't hurt." He rose from the chair and began to unbutton his shirt. "Could I have my clothes washed?"

"Of course," Beryl said. "I'll run your bath and call for laundry staff while you're in it."

Casimir shed the rest of his clothing and sank into the bath as Beryl filled it around him from the tap. Hot water—it had been so long since he'd had a hot bath. His weary body seemed to melt, and he half-closed his eyes, watching the ribbons of steam rise around him.

"Is it too warm?" Beryl asked, turning the faucet off.

"No, it's perfect. I like boiling hot water." He closed his eyes. "Just give me a minute to enjoy it." Casimir could hear her moving around the room and gathering up his clothing. He didn't worry about what few valuables he had; they were safely hidden in his bag. The door opened and, after a few murmured words, closed again.

"Sorry to keep you waiting," Beryl said. "Do you want me to get into the bath with you?"

Casimir opened his eyes. She could fit, if she sat in his lap. He smiled at her and said, "No, I think I'm going to be selfish and have this hot water all for myself."

"Of course." Beryl soaped her hands and lifted his arm, gasping when she saw his hand. "Oh my goodness. What happened to you?"

Casimir looked down at his injured hand. It was covered in dark red, raw flesh, visible against his brown skin. "I ran into one of those flesh monsters outside of town. Apparently, it wasn't smart to try and stab it with a knife."

"You're lucky to be alive. They're slow, but once they have you, they never let go," Beryl murmured. She was gentle around his wounds.

"I've never seen a creature like that before. I know better now." Casimir watched as her hands moved up his arm, and then out of view under his chin, rubbing his throat. "That reminds me: I was rescued by a man just inside of town. It's a long shot, but I was hoping you might know who he is so I can thank him."

"I might, if he lives here," she hummed. "What does he look like?"

"Young. Lanky, unshaven, with a rough voice. Messy dark hair." It wasn't much to go on, but he didn't know much else about him. "If it helps, he called me stupid."

Beryl laughed. "That's probably Mikki. He's a sweet guy, but rough around the edges. He patrols the town and protects the Jewel Box from monsters. Not… not monsters like yourself, but bad ones, like the fleshballs." She smiled as she reapplied soap to her hands. "Opal has a crush on him."

Opal. Beryl. The name finally made sense to him. "I'm surprised you're not Diamond or Ruby."

She smiled again. "There are many of us here; Diamond and Ruby were already taken."

So, the young man's name was Mikki. He would have to see if he could find him again. Casimir's thoughts were distracted by Beryl's hands gliding down his chest. She stopped and gasped loudly.

"Oh, you have a heartbeat!" She blushed when Casimir looked at her and went back to washing his body. "I'm… I'm sorry. It's just all of the stories I've heard said vampires had no heartbeat."

"Those are just stories. Of course we have a heartbeat—how else would blood circulate through our bodies? We also aren't repelled by garlic, we don't count seeds, and I like running water just fine."

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you."

"I'm not offended. You're not the first person I've gotten that reaction from." He reached up and stroked her hair to reassure her. The more time he waited to feed, the harder his heart would beat with the desperation of drawing more blood to the rest of his body. He held off for a moment, however, not wanting to scare her by being abrupt. "You're beautiful."

"Thank you. Miss Adeline prides herself on keeping a beautiful stock." Beryl knelt beside the tub, her eyes looking over him. "Would you like me to wash your hair?"

  "Please. It's disgusting."

Beryl's worked her fingers through his hair, humming to herself as she did so. "Your hair is wonderful," she said, rubbing at his scalp. "It's so thick and wavy…"

"Yes, but a real chore, especially when it's been a while between baths," Casimir said. He faked a chuckle, but the hot water had made his heart speed up even more; his veins were burning. He gripped the edge of the tub to keep control of himself. A little longer. He could wait until she was finished with his hair.

After Beryl rinsed his hair with a pitcher, he said, "I would like to finish my bath by myself. Wait for me on the bed." As much as he wanted to enjoy the hot water—and her soft hands—longer, the hunger was too strong to ignore. He needed to take care of it while he was still in control of himself.

He finished washing quickly and pulled himself out of the graying water, toweling off. He walked back into the bedroom area and saw Beryl sitting on the bed, still wearing her transparent blue wrap. When she saw him, she began to untie it.

"I'll do that," he murmured, sitting down beside her. He pulled the strings at her breastbone and waist, the only things that held the wrap closed. She was naked beneath it, and he pushed it back from her shoulders, letting it fall. "Lie down and relax."

Beryl did as she was told, her hair fanning across the pillows. She spread her legs for him, her e
yes fixed on the ceiling.

Casimir frowned a little at her actions. This was just a job for her, after all. She expected him to fuck her and leave. He stroked a hand over one of her small breasts, bending to kiss her. She started and lifted a hand to his wet hair, returning the kiss just as gently.

He left her mouth and kissed down her throat, feeling her heartbeat speeding up. It was most likely in fear, and the anticipation of pain, but he continued to work his way down. He was very careful of his teeth as he bit gently into one nipple, hearing her soft intake a breath.

With a smile, Casimir ran his hand up her inner thigh. He stroked in a long, smooth path up to the crease of her leg and back down to her knee. Beryl watched him, propped up on her elbows, and smiled as he touched her. Her smile turned to a gasp as his hand pushed her legs all the wider, kissing down until his tongue was tracing her outer folds.

Casimir watched her, finding her clit and circling around it. He could taste her growing wetness with each swipe of his tongue and could see the flush of her skin. Two fingers were eased halfway inside of her, spreading her apart, and working slowly back and forth.

"Oh," Beryl moaned quietly, her fingers winding in his thick hair. She seemed uncertain about raising her thighs around either side of his head, but relaxed when he only continued to gently pass his tongue back and forth across the tip of her stiff clit.

He raised his head, ignoring the disappointed moan from her, and pushed one of her thighs down, the stroke of his tongue replaced by the pressure of his wet fingers. "Tell me when you are going to come," he said, kissing her leg before adding, "And don't fake it for my sake, please. I really do want you to come."

"Ah… all right. I'm going to need you be a little rougher, then," Beryl replied, breathless. "Rub my clit harder, please."

Casimir thrust his fingers inside of her, wetting them again, and rounded them around her clit before applying more pressure. At the sound of her sharp breath, he bent over her thigh again, his lips feeling where her blood pulsed close to the skin. He moved down from there, just a little, and laved his tongue against her skin.
