“So how come you’re here?” Sam asked, that seemed to be the only hole in their story.

“Well, now only High angels are allowed through unless of course you have permission,” Max said as he continued proudly, “We however do not need permission for we are high Angels and the only rule we have to follow really is not to fall for a human and create family.”

“Well that’s bull,” Sam snorted, “You were all over Emma the other day.”

“No, that was only because I had thought she was who we were looking for,” Max said. He was getting annoyed, you could hear it in his voice, “There is no way, I would fall for humans I have too much pride and honor to go that low.”

Alex’s jaws tightened at the way he said humans. He had made it very obvious of his hate of humans; the reason however still escaped her

“Well how does this include me?” she asked.

“You are the one we’ve been searching for, were just lucky that we got to you in time, we don’t know what would happen if…” She trailed off. She had obviously said something she shouldn’t have and that was all Alex needed.

“If what?” She asked, “What would’ve happened if the kid had got to me first?”

“Well he would’ve done everything in his power to turn you as evil as possible and straight into a Dark angel,” Max replied. He was obviously not one for hiding things, and Alex was determined to use that to her advantage.

“What exactly is a Dark angel?” Sam asked, “I’ve heard it being said before by Martha but I don’t know what it is.”

“A dark angel is, putting it bluntly, when an angel turns bad. Their marks change. We don’t know how, but it was started by Lucifer centuries ago and he has slowly been building up a resistance to the High angels,” Max explained hate unhidden in his voice, finally shutting up when Martha gave him such a death glare, an Alpha would’ve backed down.

“This is getting all too much, I think I need a small breather,” Alex sighed as she got up, “Is there anywhere I could go where there is no one that can annoy me?”

“Sure, we have the back garden,” Max said, he was eager to get her out of the same four walls he was used to and he didn’t even try to hide it which angered Alex right to the end of her rope.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea Alex,” Sam said as he walked up to her, “Remember what happened on the train?”

“Sam, I’ll be fine, I’ll call on you if I need any help” she promised.

“That’s what you said last time too,” He said bitterly. He was still hurt over that, and Alex couldn’t help but feel a twang of guilt.

“Fine then, you can wait at the door,” she said finally giving in. she couldn’t help it, she didn’t like arguing with Sam.

Max showed them to the door that led to the back garden before leaving. Alex opened the door and closed it behind her gently. The garden was so beautiful, it had two flower beds holding 20 if not more different flowers that she couldn’t even name. Alex walked around admiring the scene before her. It was like something straight out of a Disney scene. It gave her peace of mind and she could finally try and decipher the bucket loads of information that had been landed on her but as hard as she tried she still couldn’t figure out what connected her to the whole situation.

“Damn it!” she cried out in anger, “Why can’t they just come out and tell me why I’m involved.”

The more she thought about it the more agitated Alex got.

  “I can tell you…”

The voice almost made Alex out of her skin. She spun round as fast as she could and there, standing only three meters away was the kid. Just his presence made her skin crawl. She opened her mouth to call out for Sam but the full meaning of his message hit her and she let curiosity win.

“Tell me then,” she said, breaking the promise she had made to Sam once again but the feeling of guilt was smothered by the feeling of deep anticipation, “Why are you after me?”

“You are the key,” He simply stated. Alex figured that she would have to get it out of him.

“What do you mean the key?” she asked annoyed by how he said it. Like she didn’t have a choice which to be fair she probably didn’t. This only angered her more. “Do I look like a piece of metal?”

“You are the bridge between our worlds,” He said ignoring her little jib. “We will be able to get it, finally.”

“Get what?” she asked, she was getting more confused than she was before, “What are you on about, you said you will explain why I am involved but all you’ve done is confuse me.”

“You’re the offspring of both sides, Dark and High Angels,” He explained as he started to pace, “You are the good created from evil and evil from good.”

She gave him an exasperated look. What kind of bull was he trying to pull?

“You should never have been, but now that you’re here, were going to use you to the best of our advantage.” The words cut her like knife through butter.

“What do you mean, I shouldn’t have been,” she demanded, furious now, “And you’re not going to use me, I’m not some tool for your plans.

Alex was insulted that he thought he could use her like a piece of metal.

“Your parents were wrong to do what they did, even now they still get prejudiced for it, why the Supreme dark Angel even fell for that… thing,” he spat the word thing as if it was fire on his tongue. He didn’t need to say what he meant, Alex could guess but that still didn’t mean she believed him.

“You are lying, I know that much, my mum is perfectly normal,” she said as she gave him a knowing smile before rolling her eyes, “I said tell me the truth not a bucket of rubbish.”

“Ok then, I’ll explain it to you slowly,” he said putting an emphasis on the word slowly. “The Angel law number 1 is not to make love and to try and avoid the other kind of Angel completely or you would be making sacrilege. This is just because the High Angels wouldn’t listen to anyone else’s view points on the way we lived. According to them if you weren’t of High blood, your opinion didn’t matter.”

“Lucifer tried to explain about the final chapters of the Crolonian, which are hidden from the view point of the Angels for it is written in the ancient ruins that no Angel, High or Dark can read anymore, for the knowledge has died with the last of the Ancients.”

“So?” she asked, if she had to be honest she didn’t really care, but at least she was getting things explained to her.

“Lucifer was right, but would they listen, no, instead they just kicked him and all the believers out of their city, condemning us as the Dark Angels, because we thought outside of the box.”

As much as Alex disliked the creepy kid, she agreed with his disgust at the High Angels behavior. They seemed so old fashioned, if someone thought they had figured out a way to read the damn final chapters, they should at least give them a chance and try it, not condemn them and seclude them from society, that was just plain wrong. But suspicion was beginning to creep into the back of her mind. She was certain he wasn’t telling her the full story but she wasn’t sure if she should ask him,

“What did he think should be done?” she asked, her suspicion getting the better of me

  She got no reply.

“Tell me,” she hissed in anger, he was speaking freely a few minutes ago so why did he suddenly stop. There was suddenly a pricking sensation and the hairs on her neck stood on end, it was like someone was running scissors down a chalkboard. Alex’s eyes opened wide in fear, she didn’t even have to turn around because she already knew what was behind her, but still she wanted to make sure. Slowly she turned her body around and the color instantly drained from her face.

Standing in front of her was the most hideous creature she had ever seen, with a scar running from the side of his cheek to the spot where his heart lay. Tattoos unfolded from his right shoulder all around his right side of the chest and too his hips. Pictures of flowers entwined with vines smothered his skin but her eyes were drawn to the symbol
on his left arm. On the heap of muscled was a symbol exactly like hers except for the M drawn above. From his shoulder blades she could see wings bursting out, the feathers were approximately 30 centimeters long and they were jet black with hot blood red and poison pink running through them. It was so beautiful. It captured the eyes and held them captive.

  “Hello… Daughter,” he said.

  Chapter 5

Alex could feel her body start shaking uncontrollably with fear. Her mum had never told her much about her Father, all she said was he left before she was born and Alex was left hurt at being abandoned but when her mother got remarried and got abused so badly she divorced him, she was grateful. She never wanted to see her mum hurt again or for herself to get hurt like that, but as she stood in front of the man she was certain was her father. Unexplainable emotions seemed to bubble and take over her body. Her breathing became heavy and she found it hard to stand.

“You know I’m telling the truth,” He smirked, “You are mine.”

“NO, I’m not yours, and never will be,” she hissed, “You lost all rights you had on me the day you walked out on my mum.”

“Now, be reasonable Alison,” He said smiling slyly as he started to walk towards me, “I wasn’t the only one in fault, did your mum tell you anything as of why I left. It was her fault.”

Alex doubled over, clamming her hands over her ears, refusing to listen.

“SHUT UP AND GET AWAY FROM ME!” she screamed at him, she stumbled backwards narrowly avoiding the kid who was just watching on silently waiting for orders.

“I’m not going to sit and listen to you try and blame my mum for what you did. It was your choice to leave, she didn’t force you, and all you really want to do is use me before probably disposing of me,” she whispered as tears blurred her vision, “You didn’t even say how are you.”

“I know I may not have been the greatest of fathers,” He began, “But come on, I helped bring you into the world.

“YOU ARE NO FATHER OF MINES!” she screamed, she couldn’t help it, and he made her blood boil, the way he took everything in his stride. She turned and fled, Alex had barely reached the door when it was flung open and Sam emerged, stumbling a little. Alex didn’t even care anymore; she let her tears run freely as she flung herself at him. He collapsed under her weight but her arms wrapped around him tight sobbing onto his t-shirt and he let her cry to her heart’s content.

“You okay?” He asked as he looked her in the eye. She felt embarrassed at letting him see her in such a heap of mess. She turned her face away and tried to wipe her eyes but the waterworks wouldn’t stop flowing, Guess that’s what happens when you suppress your emotions for too long.

“Sorry, I’m so sorry,” Alex said, laughing at herself in disgust as she tried to extract herself off him, “this is just so not me.”

“Your right, it’s not, “he said as he held her tighter clasping his hands around her waist, “Which must mean, something has happened.”

“I’m so sorry, I should’ve called for you earlier but I wanted answers…” Alex whispered as a new wave of guilt washed over her, “You have every right to be angry at me.”

“I’m not angry,” he sighed, “Just disappointed in you.”

Those words could have been like bullets because they killed her more.

“I’m sorry,” was all she could manage to say, not that it made up for anything.

“I’m really disappointed that you don’t trust me enough to tell me what’s going on” he said.

“That’s not it, I trust you, I really do, it’s just hard, especially now that I found out my mums been lying to me,” she said bitterly, the conversation she had minutes ago was still fresh in her memory.

“Really?” Sam said, “Tell me what happened.

“Yes, why don’t you tell us all,” Max said, Alex hadn’t heard him coming at all and was slightly embarrassed at her behavior. She quickly got off Sam and stood up before following Max back into the sitting room.

“What happened dear? You were gone for quite a bit then we heard you screaming,” Martha said as she got up to comfort her,

“I saw my dad,” Alex said quietly.

“What- how did you know he was your dad?” Sam asked, “He could’ve been anyone pretending to be your dad.

“He was my dad,” she repeated bluntly, “He even had the same symbol as me and everything and my body began to shake uncontrollably, I didn’t know why or how to stop it”

At hearing this Martha collapsed on the nearest chair.

“You saw him,” she stuttered, fear in her eyes, “is he still here?”

“I don’t know,” she said but seeing her reaction she hastily added, “I don’t think so.”

“What did he tell you?” Max asked jaws clenched.

“It wasn’t him that told me everything, it was the kid,” Alex said, “He was going on about me being the key, that I should never have been but now that I am there going to use me-“

“No one’s going to use you,” Sam interfered, “You’re not some kind of tool for them. And what does he mean, you shouldn’t have been?”

“Well apparently Dark Angels and High angels are supposed to try and avoid each other completely, it’s the law or they would be creating sacrilege.”

“That’s bull,” He said flatly “You can’t control who you fall for.”

“Yes you can, I can anyway,” Alex said, “But this is the stupidest part. They made Dark Angels outcast just because Lucifer had an idea about the hidden last pages of the Crolonian. I mean seriously?”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about?” Martha gasped, “If you knew what he asked for you would’ve isolated him and his followers too.”

“Somehow I doubt that,” she said bitterly, “What could he ask for that was so bad?”

“He said that the only one who could probably read it was a mixture of Bloods, a mutation of an Angel and the sign of the Crolonian on them.” Max said flatly.

“What, but back then, there weren’t dark angels,” Sam said confused,

“Yes, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any other kind of people.” Max explained.

“Oh, so how was he planning on getting this, would he just go around asking random creatures?” She asked, “Or what?”

“You’ve got it wrong, in our world, you should only speak to your kind, so everyone would’ve said no because of the law and even if you paid them, it would mean nothing, because we all have different currency,” Martha explained. She didn’t need to continue, Alex had already caught onto what she was trying to explain.

“Oh…” she said, eyes wide, “That is just ridicules!”

“Yes, that’s what we said, but he refused to listen and went around killing and extracting blood and DNA from several beings, wizards, Amazonians, Phoenixes, before finally getting a high Angel.” Max said real sorry in his voice. “Your mum.”

“But my mums still fit and healthy,” Alex said puzzled, “So how…”

“Alex, he raped her.” Martha said gently.

The news came as another blow to Alex and her understanding of men and love.

Her mouth opened and closed repeatedly but nothing came out. Not a word. Sam tried to comfort her but she just pushed him away, she didn’t want to be around any male. She didn’t want to be around any Angels. She didn’t want to be around anyone. She didn’t want to be.

Alex could feel the world spinning, everything went fuzzy, there was a rush of air and she could see the ground rushing at her before she banged her head and was sent into darkness….

When she finally came around, she was lying on a bed and she could hear voices.

“We should tell her…” she heard Martha say.

“You tell her and lets’ see how you deal with the Council,” Max hissed.

“But she deserves to know,” Martha pleaded.

There was something they weren’t telling her, Alex had guessed that, but it seemed they weren’t allowed to o
r the ‘Council’ would do something to them, and she was willing to bet it wouldn’t be giving them benefits.

“Shh, I think she’s coming round,” Max said as he approached the bed.

‘Damn, my covers blown’ Alex thought angrily before opening her eyes. She was blinded by the lights she was lying under for a couple of seconds before getting up.

“What time is it?” she asked, still groggy from her sleep.

“It just turned 9 in the evening,” Max said, “You’ve been out for four hours.”

  “Really?” she frowned. “Where’s Sam?”

“He’s in the sitting room asleep” Martha said, “But it’s okay, You can have Max’s bed, he can sleep on the sofa today. I think you need the comfort.”

Instantly Alex jumped off the bed and started dusting herself off, she was just beginning to get comfortable on that bed too. Talk about bad luck.

“No, it’s okay, I don’t want to trouble you,” she said, “I’ll sleep in the sitting room too.”

“But Alexis dear-“Martha began but was cut off by Max who thrust a pillow and duvet cover in Alex’s face.

“Mind the third step, its wobbly so don’t go and fall again,” he said before physically shoving her out the room.

“And good night to you too,” Alex muttered as she walked down the set of stairs. She was so busy trying to see where the third step was that she tripped over her own feet and went flying down the rest of the stairs. Thankfully she landed on her beddings so she made a muffled thud. She got up and looked around; she could hardly see anything at all. It was so dark. She felt around the dark for the light switch or even the lamp she saw earlier but walked into the coffee table. A yelp escaped her mouth before she could stop it. I heard a moan, shuffling and then light poured into the room, chasing away the dark.

“Alex!” Sam said suddenly alert as he jumped of his sofa and stumbled towards her. He looked so messy it was funny. His hair was sticking all over the place.

“Are you okay?” he asked as he gave her a hug, she let him this time, “I’m so sorry, I should’ve tried to be more comforting instead of making up excuses.”
