“Yes, we do actually,” Giorgio said, “It’s for your own safety, we needed to know if it meant something.”
“Of course it meant something,” Alex snapped, “it meant that I was in danger! Now if you don’t mind, I’d like it if all of you left s that I could at least get some sleep.”
She glared at everyone in case someone tried to argue with her. Seeing the look of stubborn determination in her eyes Sam and Thomas knew better than to argue, unfortunately, Giorgio did not.
“No can do, we have to wait until the guard arrives,” he said as he leaned against the wall. He voice held a note of authority but it did not deter Alex.
“Well, you can wait outside or I swear I will walk out of here,” She threatened and she meant every word she said, she could only take so much before she broke. Thomas must’ve realized the truth behind the threat because he shot Giorgio a warning look before dragging him out of the room leaving Sam and Alex alone.
“I said everyone,” Alex said as she fell backwards onto the bed.
“Alex, you don’t think I told them do you?” Sam asked, a hint of worry in his voice, “because I swear I never told them a thing.”
“Don’t worry I know that you’ll never agree to anything that might harm me,” She reassured him, “I just want to be alone”
“Okay but if anything happens you better tell me straight away,” he told her, “I mean it, Alex, you can tell the others as much as you want but tell me the truth. No more of this, ‘I don’t want to make you worry’ crap you always pull.”
“And what If you accidently let your guard down and someone finds out information we don’t want them too,” Alex asked.
“I’m not that stupid Alex!” Sam growled, “Trust a little will you, you act as if the whole worlds against you, and maybe they are but I’m not. So it’s fast time you got that through that thick skull of yours.”
“Sam…” Alex never got to finish the sentence because he was already out the door leaving no trace that he had ever been there.
Alex buried her head in her pillow. She had made Sam upset for no reason other than to feel better about herself. She didn’t even know what she was getting at with her horrible accusation. She knew Sam was a very cautious person and would never let his guard down if he held valuable information. Tomorrow first thing she was going to go apologize to him, she vowed as she drifted into an uneasy dreamless sleep.
She woke to the sound of footsteps, someone was coming. She open her eyes a fraction, just enough to see through her lashes. The door to her room opened and a tiny figure tiptoed in, gently closing the door. The person moved towards the bed and Alex made sure that she had her mind shield in place as the person kneeled down in front of her. It took her a moment to realize that it was only Zara. She had probably sneaked out to see her. She felt relief was through her she was about to open her eyes fully when Zara pulled back and pulled out something looking suspiciously like a syringe. Realization dawned on Alex like a twenty-pound boulder. Zara had not snuck out to see her; she had snuck out to kill her. Without thinking, Alex jumped up and ran to the other side of the room.
“Alex, I snuck over to see you,” She said as the impact of the initial shock wore off. Alex could not believe she thought her that gullible.
“You can drop the act. What do you want from me?” Alex snarled. She was sick of deceit.
“I don’t want anything but you dead, unfortunately, Lucifer wants you alive,” She said with an over exaggerated sigh, all niceness gone from her voice, “If you weren’t Lucifer’s daughter, and if I didn’t have the deepest respect for him, you would already be dead.”
Alex barked out a loud and cold laugh wanting to attract as much attention as possible in he hopes of someone coming to her rescue.
“You wouldn’t have succeeded, I’ve got 24 hour surveillance, like I’ve got a guard somewhere nearby who should be arriving soon,” Alex said hoping she was right.
“Well that may be true, unfortunately you forgot one thing. I already took him out, “Zara said with a smirk. The meek, quiet girl Alex had known was gone replaced by a mean, spiteful arrogant witch.
Before Alex could think up a smart remark to throw back at her, Zara had lunge forward grabbed Alex by her pigtail and jerked backwards so that her face was on level with Alex’s.
“Now, you’re going to come along with me and gratefully help your daddy like a perfect little daughter, got it/” She hissed as she pulled harder on Alex’s hair. Alex held back a whimper.
“And what if I don’t, are you going to disobey your master and kill me? Hmm?” Alex asked. She knew it was bad idea to taunt Zara, especially in her current circumstance but she refused to go down without a fight.
Before Zara could reply, however, there was an eruption of noise and seconds later, the door to her room was flung open with no care what so ever to whatever was behind it. Three men Alex didn’t recognize followed by Max, Sam, Thomas and Giorgio.
“I knew it!” Max cried, “I knew you weren’t to be trusted!”
“Alex! Zara! What on earth is-” Sam began as he took in the situation in front of him. A sense of dread entered is body and felt like dead weight in his belly. Max was right, a few hours ago, Max had told every one of his suspicions. Foresight was only known in Dark angels because it was considered an unnatural thin, seeing the future. Sam had originally not believed any of Max’s concerns, he blamed them on Max being the paranoid jerk he was but as he stood there, watching as Zara held a syringe filled with a misted blue liquid that he knew would do no good, reality hit him. He had to face the truth. The only other person he could confide in with confidence about any trouble with Alex was on the bad side. And worse still, was trying to kidnap her and take her to her father. When had friends become so deceitful? When had trust become something of no value?
When had life become a war?
Alex froze with fear, with so many people in the room; her hopes had risen briefly before once again being deflated. With so many people in the room, there was almost a guarantee and that normally made people nervous, but at the odds so stacked against you, Alex didn’t have a clue how Zara might react. The same conclusion occurred to Sam.
He froze; the amount of tension in the room could be cut with a knife. He was fully expecting Thomas to make a strategic move because his brain had shut down the moment he saw Alex’s petrified look. It tore his heart to think that she could be dead any minute and the last time they had spoken, he had shouted at her when she was in such a traumatized condition. Shame threatened to overwhelm him, so he didn’t notice the commotion until it was too late.
A wall shattering explosion erupted from behind them. The door was flung off its hinges and straight into a Thomas and Max. Chaos erupted, screams could be heard over the running and falling debris as it hit unknowing victims but one voice was louder than the rest. One scream sent shivers down his back, one he had heard all too well. The scream of a Black midnight dragon. His blood ran cold, if a Black Midnight dragon was there, did that mean more reinforcements were coming. Without thinking of the consequences of what his action might be, Sam did the most stupid thing he had ever done.
He turned and ran to see what the commotion might be, climbing over several bodies to do so, leaving Alex with less than five people to help her. Halfway down the corridor, he realized with dawning horror his awful mistake. He spun on his heels and raced back into the room to find Alex and Zara seemingly suspended in air. Giorgio was standing doing nothing and Sam felt a wave of hatred towards the man but it was not the right time to let his emotions run out of check. He searched the now crumbling room and saw Max slowly inching towards Alex. Why? Sam had no idea and didn’t really care; he had to get Ale back and about now when she wasn’t in so much danger. He mad to move forward but instantly Max’s head snapped towards him and sent him a warning look telling him to stay put. However, that was the last thing on Sam’s mind as he lunged forward to make a grab at Alex’s foot only to get the shock of his
life. His muscles jerked out and he collapsed on the floor in numbing pain. His eyes glassed over as he watched Alex’s body get plucked out of the air and hauled over to the window. A blur of legs told him that Max had ran after him but the distinctive sound of breaking glass told him that they had escaped seconds later, Giorgio’s angry face was in Sam’s.
“What the hell did you think you were doing back there!” he bellowed spit landing on Sam’s face, he did I’ve Sam a chance to reply, “I’ll tell you what you just did! You just handed them the key! That’s what you just did, you gave them, Alex!”
Horror mixed with anger erupted inside of Sam.
“I didn’t see you doing anything!” Sam spat back as he rubbed his temples, trying to get feeling back into his muscles.
“Well maybe that was because I was the one suspending them in thin air you idiot!” Giorgio bellowed, “But what did you have to do, you had to go break the line of power didn’t you!”
“Giorgio, he didn’t know better,” Max said as he pulled Giorgio away from Sam.
“It doesn’t matter, the fact still remains that Alex is gone and it’s my fault,” Sam said as he buried his head in his eyes in despair, the truth of his words finally sinking in.
The moment Alex saw Sam drop to the floor she lost all hopes. The way his body jerked and then went deadly still was in graved behind her eyelids. If he was dead, she only had direction to go to, not that she had a choice. She had one last comforting thought however as Zara dragged her numb body through the broken window.
She was going to see her mother. For better or worse, she was going to be back with her mother. Back where she belonged…
