“Come with me.” Tory crossed the open room and did her ‘magic hands’ trick to open the wall where her friends had entered. Elle followed her out of the comfortable living space and onto a large mezzanine that overlooked a massive open area filled with hundreds, possibly thousands of ‘people.' From the height of the overlook, Elle couldn’t distinguish if those below were Takers, humans, or a mixture of both. The air was filled with a near hopeless vibe that was reinforced by the dull and solemn tone of the voices below. Many of them sat at tables eating, or conversing, but most of them milled around chattering amongst themselves and from Elle’s vantage point, there were so many speaking at the same time it sounded like the dull buzz of swarming bees.
“Turn Phoenix to see the crowd below,” Troy whispered. “Please.”
“K” Elle uttered a single sound as she turned sideways and showed her little man the confusion and chaos, like an army of ants, below. The golden sparkle of her child’s eyes inflamed and glowed brightly as his lips curled upward in a tiny toothless smile.
“Behold!” Tory shouted above the echoing noise from below and slowly a hush came over the multitude and one by one, as they noticed the child above, they dropped to one knee and lowered their heads. “Phoenix. The child of the heavens and the earth. Born of alien and human... This is our future and our savior. Stand and behold what we will become, what we must become.” The masses below followed Tory’s command and a roaring cheer drifted up from them and then fell quiet again.
“Say ‘Hi’ ‘Nix.” Elle waved his hand to the crowd and the small child let out a loud coo that almost sounded like he was saying hello. Some cheered at the greeting, some laughed, but it seemed that all were very vocal, very positive and perhaps the mood had taken a turn toward happiness and hope. “Are they all humans? Who are they?” she said quietly to Tory.
“Many are, but many are Takers who have joined us also,” Tory explained.
“But they’re talking and... stuff.” Her tone radiated confusion, and rightfully so.
“Yes, they are,” Tory smiled slyly. “It seems that when given the opportunity when allowed to... They evolve quite quickly. Now there are humans, Ahsushas, and Takers who are with us, and there are those who are against us. There is an unusual dissension in the ranks among those that the alien beings have created to serve them, and that may be a key turning point in our fight.”
‘East?’ Elle thought. Her heart told her they should head west to find Tanner and Daniel, but her head argued that in the unlikely event that they were still alive, they could be anywhere in the world by now... Literally anywhere. “I need to rest. Can you do that ‘magic door’ thing so ‘Nix and I can lay down for a while?”
Tory nodded and parted the gray wall revealing her prepared living quarters and called for the rest of Elle’s friends to leave her for a while so she could sleep and digest all that was happening.
“One last thing before you leave me.” Elle caught Tory’s attention. “What happened to Bailey? Is she going to be alright?”
“We can only hope.” Tory swallowed hard. “It seems the bullet nicked Bailey’s heart and tore part of the valve, as best we can figure. We are in a constant state of ‘reviving’ her. The damage could easily kill her before she can heal herself. If that happens, the being of light will be released and that, my sister, is something none of us want.”
