Home too Soon
The hum of fluorescent lights mixed with dozens of computers, but for Mike, the sounds disappeared into the void. He’d been a cubicle dweller long enough that nothing surprised him. Not even his boss suggesting a long night.
“Mike, how is it going?”
Mike suppressed a sigh. Either he was about to lose his weekend or his evening. Either way, it would suck.
Again.
“Fine Walter, how can I help you?”
Walter never came into the cubicle farms unless he needed something. And the only thing he ever needed was the blood, sweat, and toil of one Mike Anderson. Or one of the other cubicle dwellers, but by Mike’s calculations, it was his turn.
“Yeah, well, I hate to do this, but the client wants the new run by tomorrow. Think you can get it done today?”
Mike sighed. No. Not without staying into the night. “It’ll be a late night,” Mike warned. Not that it would do any good. It never did.
“Thanks Mike! You’re a good team player.”
It was like talking to someone who didn’t even listen. Hell, that was probably exactly what the conversation was! Why Walter didn’t just jump straight to the point, Mike had no idea. Maybe there was some secret management technique that said it would be better if the employee volunteered, and Walter just didn’t know how to swing that conversation.
Mike sighed again. Time for a long ass night.
He sent a quick text to his girlfriend letting her know he’d be home late. Again.
“No problem,” she texted back. “I’ll wait up.”
Mike smiled. Diana was the best. Way out of his league, but for some reason, she loved him.
Settling into his chair, Mike vowed to finish the stupid updates as quick as possible. Pushing aside thoughts of his girlfriend naked and writhing under him, he pulled up the program. How long could it take to fix a few bugs?
A long-time it turned out, though not as long as Mike feared. Pushing the last changes to the server he took a deep breath. Only nine. That left him plenty of time to rush home, make love to Diana like she deserved, and still get enough sleep for the next day.
He grabbed his bag, pulled out his phone to text her that he’d be home soon. Paused. Maybe a surprise.
Grinning, Mike sent a quick order to a flower shop that was on his way. They stayed open late, probably just for poor idiots like him. Chocolate and flowers should put Diana in the mood. Not that it took much. His girlfriend was insatiable.
“Hold the elevator!” Mike cried as he saw the elevator door closing. Hope dwindling, he hurried towards the door in time to see a petite hand slip through the doors. They bounced back open.
“Thank you!” Mike huffed. I need to work out more. He laughed to himself. Maybe he could do that in between his late nights, early mornings, and long weekends at work.
“No problem,” a familiar voice said. One of Mike’s neighbors. A sweet woman, around his own age. Pretty, though not as sexy as his own Diana. He never could remember names.
I should meet my neighbors. Get to know them. He snorted. He’d put that on the list right after working out.
“Nice flowers,” the woman said.
“Thank you.”
“Special occasion?”
Not one for small talk, Mike smothered a burst of irritation. The woman was just being nice. Why couldn’t he do the same? “Not really, just a late night.”
“Ah, well, I hope it helps,” she said with a sad smile.
Huh? Mike shrugged. Maybe she was jealous? It didn’t matter. The elevator dinged at his floor. If he remembered right, the woman had the condo right above his. She’d probably heard him making love to Diana before. Which didn’t bother him as much as he thought it should. He shrugged again and stepped off the elevator.
“Have a good night,” he said.
“You too,” she said. Paused. “If you need anything, I’m right above you.”
The doors closed.
Mike frowned. What was that about? If he needed anything, he ran to the 24-hour grocery store located right in the building.
Shaking his head, Mike hurried to his condo. Excitement building, he unlocked the door with his phone.
The door opened into a room that combined the kitchen and living room. No lights were on, but the blinds on the floor to ceiling windows were open, and the city illumination provided enough that he could see.
He loved the view. It was why he’d bought the place, shortly before meeting Diana in fact. She’d moved in a few months later.
Mike paused.
What was that?
A soft groan.
Diana. He’d recognize that sound anywhere.
The minx was pleasuring herself. He grinned. Already having half aroused himself just thinking about what awaited him at home, the sound triggered his full erection. Just a sound. Having a hot girlfriend was the greatest thing ever.
More moaning.
A soft, “Yes, there.”
A much deeper groan.
Wait.
Mike swallowed. Another moan, deep and long mixed with Diana’s. Her voice simply wasn’t that deep.
Few women matched that.
A man?
The sad smile on his neighbor’s face suddenly took on a different context.
Setting the flowers and chocolates on the counter, Mike moved silently across the hardwood floors. Towards the bedroom door.
His fingers shook.
Porn, she must be watching porn.
The thought didn’t calm his fears. Not at all. It didn’t sound like porn. Not even the most romantic amateur porn.
Mike put his hand on the door handle.
Do I want to do this? He could go back to work. Come home at the time he’d initially thought. She’d be done by then. Right? What he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.
But he couldn’t do it.
He had to know.
Pressing the handle down, his heart pounded, sounding like a heard of elephants in his own ears. Yet the soft moans still rumbled higher.
A trickle of sweat broke out down his back.
Cold.
It snaked downward.
The door opened.
Silently parted.
No lights greeted him, but Mike didn’t need them.
The moonlight and glow from the city provided more than enough for his vision.
Too much.
His girlfriend.
The woman he wanted to marry.
The woman he thought would bear his children.
Knees up, head back, eyes closed.
Passion on her face.
A huge man knelt between her legs.
Cock thrusting into her.
The noises came to him, louder than before.
“Yes. Oh god, Chad, right there.”
Chad. That was a name he wouldn’t forget.
The man’s muscular back rippled with each movement. Diana jerking on the bed in the familiar throes of passion. The same poses and expressions he’d seen hundreds of times. When he’d caused them.
Never had he seen them when Diana had been with another person though.
He’d never even considered it.
I should interrupt.
But he couldn’t.
Couldn’t leave.
Couldn’t look away.
He just watched.
Watched Diana’s breasts bounce. The tightening around her eyes.
The way her hips lifted.
He listened to the moans getting louder.
“Chad!” she cried. Her body trembling, convulsing.
Chad grunted, thrust hard.
No condom, Mike thought as the man came. She couldn’t even make him use a condom.
Chest hurting, Mike turned away.
He could say something.
Demand an answer.
But he wouldn’t like it.
No. He wouldn’t like it at all.
Mike slipped out of the condo as softly as he’d entered.
To the Internet!
Mike hesitated with his hand hovering in the air. He wasn’t sure what he was doing here. He had friends who would take him in, no questions asked. But in the background would linger, “I told you so.” His close friends had never liked Diana.
No. They wouldn’t say anything. His friends wouldn’t even think anything bad. But Mike would. And that was almost as terrible.
He knocked softly. If she was still asleep, he didn’t want to wake her.
Nothing.
Turning to go, he heard the soft click of the condo buildings smart locks. Part of him wanted to run, jump in the elevator before she answered. But he’d knocked. It would be rude. And he wasn’t sure where else to go.
“Mike?” the now sleepy woman from the elevator asked.
Great, she knows my name.
Mike ran a nervous hand through his hair. “Uh, hi.”
She sighed and stepped back. “Come in.”
Just like that?
Of course. She could likely hear.
How long had she known? Anger cut Mike’s breath. Why hadn’t she said anything? He started to chew her out but stopped himself. They didn’t even know each other. Why would she say anything?
He followed her into a condo identical to his own.
“Are you okay?” she asked softly.
“No.” Why he answered honestly, he wasn’t sure. Something about this woman made him want to be truthful. Or maybe he just didn’t give a fuck anymore. Or perhaps she’d know if he lied. He’d hardly be there if he’d been okay.
She smiled lopsided, a sad smile. “I’m sorry. I’ve been struggling with telling you. If I’d known they would be there,” she cut off. “I’m sorry.”
Hearing her repeat back his earlier thoughts, Mike blushed. He might not know her name, but she was a better friend than he’d known.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
She shrugged. “It’s hard to know what to do in these situations.”
Mike laughed bitterly. “Yeah, I am sorry for putting you in it.”
“It’s hardly your fault.”
“Isn’t it?”
She looked down.
Mike sighed. “I’m sorry. I’m not great company tonight.”
“Understandable. I-I don’t mean to interfere, but what do you plan to do?”
Mike hesitated. What could he do? March down and kick her out? Technically the condo was his; Diana didn’t even pay him rent or any part of the mortgage. They weren’t married. Were the common law issues? Or was that something made up he’d read on the internet?
“I have no idea.”
“Ah. Yeah. That makes sense.” The woman paused. “I went through this.”
“You caught your boyfriend cheating?”
Mike’s neighbor ran a hand through her short hair. “Well. She was my girlfriend.”
“Oh. I suspect it hurts no matter what.”
“I cried for a few days… months maybe.” She laughed without humor.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come here. I’m bringing up bad memories.”
The woman touched Mike’s arm. “I wouldn’t have opened the door or asked you in if I didn’t want to help.”
Mike nodded.
“For the first few weeks, I wanted revenge. I considered all the ways I could hurt Cassie.”
Great, now I know her ex’s name, but not hers. “Vengeance. That might work.”
“I don’t think it would,” she sighed. “I ended up in therapy, which helped a lot more.”
Vengeance. The thought whisked through Mike’s mind. But how? He didn’t know. I should know. Maybe I didn’t know Diana as well as I thought.
“Mike?” the woman asked softly. “Don’t dwell on revenge. It will scar your soul.”
“I suppose,” he said. But he couldn’t get the idea out of his head. He wanted to hurt her. Vengeance. That would help.
A phone lit up next to him, he automatically glanced at it. “Beth, got the concert tickets, still interested?”
Beth. Her name was Beth. Mike sighed. That helped. Bad enough to have been cheated on, he didn’t need the guilt of getting assisted by a woman he couldn’t even name but should have been able to.
They sat in silence while Beth texted with whoever had contacted her. A girlfriend? Too bad. She was cute. Her condo was tastefully decorated, but with furniture that appeared comfortable and utilitarian rather than pretty. That was a considerable change from Diana who insisted everything had to be just perfect. His girlfriend was rather high maintenance.
Mike sighed. Already cheated on, and he was pining for a lesbian. Not smart.
“Sorry,” Beth said when she finished up. “I tend to stay up late, and my friends know.”
“I’m up pretty late myself. Though not by choice. My work loves assigning last-minute deadlines.”
“Ouch. I work for myself, so I’d only have myself to blame.”
“Oh? What do you do?”
Beth blushed in the dim light. “I’m an artist.”
“That’s amazing! I once drew a stick man. My mom thought it was a house.”
Beth laughed. “It’s nice to do what you love, but it took a long time to get good enough to make a living.” She paused, looked down. “Honestly, I wouldn’t have made it without help.”
“That’s nothing to be ashamed about. We all need help. Look at me.”
Beth smiled at him.
They sat quietly until Mike took a deep breath. “I should go. Diana will be expecting me.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I-I’m not sure.” He hated lying to Beth just as they got to know each other a little better, but she’d already made her opinion on revenge clear. Plus, it wasn’t a lie. Mostly. He didn’t know what he would do.
“You’re going to say something?”
“Not yet. I think I need time.”
“Ah. Be careful Mike. You seem like a nice guy, and you may be hurting now, but it can get worse. Believe me.”
She said it so emphatically that Mike did believe her. He just wasn’t sure he could follow her advice.
Mike kissed Diana, glancing down her open robe, a thin, silkie thing that barely reached her amazing ass and, when parted, left Diana’s enormous cleavage exposed. He picked out the robe himself as a birthday gift. It felt soiled now.
He sighed internally, not wanting to let her know she was getting to him. Back for one moment and already losing myself down her bosom.
“Hey, sweetie,” Diana chirped. “How was your day?”
How can she be so bubbly after fucking another man? Mike shook his head. “Rough. Really rough.” That might cover for any slips of anger.
“Aww, my poor sweetie bear.” Diana wrapped thin arms around him, pulling his head down to her chest. His favorite place to rest.
Or it had been. Now all he c
ould picture was another man sucking those tits.
Maybe fucking them.
Had they done that?
Was it a one-night thing? Or a relationship of some kind? She’d called out his name, suggesting she knew more than having just met him.
Chad.
Mike’s new nemesis. But how could he get revenge?
What could he do?
Would throwing out Diana be enough? She didn’t have resources of her own. Mike’s stomach flipped. Could he do it? Could he even be that callous?
The memory of Chad between Diana’s legs came back. No. He wasn’t being callous. Anything he did, Diana had brought on herself.
Diana patted Mike’s head while whispering little nothings in baby talk. It had always comforted him before, but this time as soon as he started relaxing, he’d remember the bliss on her face. Not brought about by him, but another man.
Mike straightened. “Thanks babe,” he said, looking out the window. He couldn’t meet her baby-blues. Just couldn’t. He faked a yawn. “I have an early morning; I should go to sleep.”
“Aww, are you sure?” Diana played with the edge of her robe, slowly opening it more. “Maybe there’s something I could do to make your day better,” she purred.
What the hell? She’d fucked another man just hours before, and now she was trying to seduce him? What was with this woman?
What did I miss?
And that’s what hurt the most. Mike had missed something. Something in himself. What had driven her into the arms of another? If he wasn’t providing what she needed, why hadn’t she said something? A hint? Or had she hinted? Had he missed it?
His heart pounded, his head hurt, his stomach flipped over and over. He wanted to hurl. What could he do? What should he do?
He gave Diana a quick peck. “Rain check? I really am exhausted. You know Walter. He’s an ass.”
She pouted, even that not diminishing her beauty. “Okay baby. Let’s get you to bed. And I’ll even behave. This time.” She winked at him.
But she hadn’t behaved.
She hadn’t behaved with someone else.
Chad.
Mike followed his girlfriend into their bedroom. But he couldn’t sleep. Just laid there until Diana was deep into her own sleep cycle.
What am I going to do?
Vengeance.
Vengeance.
