Kaylee’s gasp penetrated his creeping confusion. “Is it…It can’t be, can it?”
He plucked the box from the top of the stack, his heart hammering in his chest and threatening to break free as he thumbed the lid open. It was. The ring he’d proposed to her with two years ago. He took a deep breath and spun to face her, not able to stand.
Her gaze flitted between the box and him, a hopeful smile on her face. He fumbled for words, but he had no idea what to say. He’d meant what he said earlier, he understood if she wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment, but that didn’t mean he wanted to hear her reject him again so soon.
She pulled the ring out, lamplight glinting off the tiny solitaire diamond, and she slipped it onto her ring finger. She kneeled in front of him, bringing her eye level with him. “I mean, if you’re still offering.”
Her cheeks were warm against his palms as he rested his hands on her face. Relief and joy spread through him. He pulled her close and kissed her deeply, searing the moment into his memory. I won’t ever forget this one. “Absolutely. Always and forever. I only want you, Kelle-belle.”
She broke away with a soft laugh and rested her forehead on his. “Then yes. My answer is yes.”
