“I’m so sorry, Goldie, ever so sorry! We’ll buy you all kinds of fine things when I have some money, eat in fine restaurants and we’ll never have to go back to Georgia, ever again! I promise you that. Now let’s get you settled in and calmed down, dearie. This is going to be a long trip but I do believe what comes next may be even longer.” Kissing Goldie’s forehead, she soothed the other woman’s hair, letting the train rock Goldie into a gentle sleep. Maddy forced down her own longings, her desires to kiss Goldie’s pain away and instead focused on soothing the worry from the other woman’s brow, singing softly to Goldie as she slept about all the things she wanted and could not have.

Josh Akers worked quick, rushing Maddy through a recording session and quickly booking her into several jazz clubs. His star was quickly rising and this was her first night with a large audience. Over two hundred people had booked tickets with the theatre she was about to play in and every seat was full. Maddy had stage fright at first, but as she walked onto the stage she realized she couldn’t see any of them because of the spotlights shining into her eyes. She could only hear the murmuring of the crowd before she started singing. The light played off of the beaded emerald dress she wore, giving the appearance that she was wearing jewels that would make a queen envious. She felt like a queen in the dress and took a deep breath before she started the night. She didn’t give a long speech or introduce the song; she just listened as the band played their instruments and started singing her song.

A song about swimming in the moonlight with the one you loved, stolen kisses and longing for something that you simply could not have yet. A song of promises that hadn’t been made but, somehow, would one day be kept. She’d written it in the studio and Josh saw it, insisting she sing it on the record. Goldie hadn’t heard it yet, but Maddy hoped she’d like it.

As the audience jumped to their feet, clapping their hands and whistling their enjoyment Maddy felt a deep satisfaction. She felt pride and an urge to cry with joy. She’d never expected that much applause or the calls for more. She gave the audience everything they asked for: she sang sweet songs of love, songs of unrequited passion and a happy tune or two about being with the one you love. She stood on the stage in awe of the adoration she was receiving as the night ended, stunned and humbled by her own success. If only her momma and daddy could see her now! She bowed and walked off the stage, head held high with a wide grin splitting her mouth. She felt like her jaw might break she was smiling so much but she couldn’t stop doing it.

Goldie almost knocked her down when she launched herself at Maddy. Maddy laughed, holding the smaller woman close, delighted that Goldie was so pleased.

“Oh darling, that was wonderful! You wrote that for me didn’t you? It was so beautiful the song about the moonlight swim! Oh, Maddy, I’m so proud of you! You’re a star my darling, an absolute star!” Goldie had tears streaming from her eyes but this time they were tears of joys, pride and Maddy gasped as she saw love there. Actual love!

Josh ran in “Maddy you were perfect, baby. Absolutely perfect! You had them eating out of your hand! We’re all going to go far and it’s because of you! I saw reporters running out of the theatre to get to the phones to turn in reviews to their editors. Running! Oh, we’re going to be rich, Maddy! Rich beyond our wildest dreams!” Josh picked her up as he spoke, spinning her around and around in his arms as he laughed with glee.

Later that evening, after the drinking, the celebrating and eating, a warm bath was all Maddy wanted as she and Goldie slipped into her hotel room. She turned the taps, letting the water fill the art-deco tub of the expensive hotel Josh had booked them into, slipping out of the heavy gown she’d been wearing for hours now.

“Can you bring in my robe, Goldie? I’m going to dip into this pool they call a bathtub.” Maddy called over her shoulder.

Goldie slid in five minutes later, two lit candles in her hands as she flicked off the light. She had on Maddy’s robe and let it slip off her shoulders as she placed the candles on the bathtub.

“Mind if I join you?” she asked.

Maddy’s tongue almost fell out of her mouth as she looked at Goldie; the beauty of her white breasts, down her flat stomach, to the golden hair that hid the secrets to Goldie’s womanhood. Goldie was an absolute angel and Maddy felt her desires stirring as she gazed at her.

“Um, if you’d like to. I mean, yes, I’d like you to join me. Please.” Scooting over she watched as Goldie stepped into the water, the levels rising as Goldie settled into the tub. Maddy sat back, letting her head rest on the edge of the tub.

“Oh this is nice” Goldie said as she slid her arms through the water.

“What are you doing, Goldie? Why are you here with me now?” Maddy asked. She had to. Goldie had shown no interest in a sexual relationship with her and now that she was a star, here she was: naked and inviting.

“I guess it does look odd doesn’t it? You’re a star now and I’m just some little nobody from the backyards of Georgia. I’ve loved you since I first stole your pants though. That first night I watched you floating on the water, so brave and so proud. You were beautiful, Maddy. I wanted you then. But I didn’t think you wanted me, you never said anything, not until you sang that song for Josh that first time. And then we had too much happening. I wanted to be your friend but I didn’t want to saddle you with some hick from home. Not until I heard that song tonight and knew you loved me as much as I loved you.”

Thinking about what Goldie said Maddy knew she was right, that she’d hid her own feelings but she thought that was what Goldie wanted. If she’d known Goldie felt the same she’d have acted sooner. She was done hiding her feelings and pulled Goldie to her in the tub, letting Goldie slide between her wet thighs as she did.

The candlelight played over their bodies, glistening off the water as Maddy shared her first full on, grownup kiss with Goldie. She pulled Goldie’s face to her own, letting her lips play over the other woman’s full bottom lip. She nipped at the lip, asking Goldie silently to open to her. She had no time for tentative kisses now, she’d waited far too long to have this woman’s mouth on her own.

Her tongue invaded Goldie’s mouth while her fingers slid below the water, grasping the slick breasts that floated just below. Goldie gasped, the pleasure of Maddy’s fingers on her nipples making her pull away with a moan.

“Oh my, don’t stop that!” Goldie pleaded.

Maddy had no idea what she was doing but she knew exploring was the only way she’d learn. She ran her hands down Goldie’s body, pushing up on her stomach so Goldie would rise on her knees in the water. Maddy slid up closer to her, letting her fingers travel down Goldie’s stomach, into the water and down between Goldie’s thighs. Maddy raised her head, capturing first one then the other nipple between her lips to suck gently as she explored Goldie’s body. She didn’t know the word for this part.

“Your fingers feel so good in my pussy, Maddy! So good!” Goldie cried as her hips thrust onto Maddy’s hand.

Pussy then, Maddy thought, this is Goldie’s pussy. Sliding another finger into the entrance there, Maddy felt Goldie jerk as her thumb brushed against a different part of Goldie’s pussy. Maddy looked up and watched as she flicked the nub again and smiled as she saw Goldie’s head fall back, a sigh of pure pleasure escaping the woman’s lips as her breasts pushed out into Maddy’s face. This was a good spot to focus on too, then.

Maddy wrapped her other arm around Goldie’s waist to keep her from slipping and focused on but Goldie’s pleasure. She twirled her thumb and twisted her fingers as Goldie’s hips thrust onto her hand, enjoying the sounds of pleasure that escaped Goldie’s mouth. She filled her mouth with the delicious treat that was Goldie’s right breast and sucked hard on it, not wanting to hurt the woman she loved but thinking that more might equal more pleasure. Why did people ever get out of bed if it felt that good?

Her own pussy was throbbing now, her nipples aching to be touched but she focused on Goldie, wanting to see where this led.
Goldie started gasping, words just tripping out of her mouth that made no sense as she started to quiver in Maddy’s arms.

“I’m cumming, I’m cumming” Goldie whispered but Maddy had no idea what that meant. Whatever it was must be good because the quivering turned to spasms and a shout of pure pleasure from Goldie. Maddy clung to Goldie, not letting her fall as the spasms wracked her body. Maddy just watched, fascinated with what she had done, with Goldie’s response to it all. The spasms started to slow and Goldie sank down in the water, seeking out Maddy to lie on her chest.

“That was wonderful, Maddy. Absolutely wonderful.” Goldie still hadn’t caught her breath and she sounded breathy as she spoke against Maddy’s breast.

“It looked wonderful, whatever it was. I’ve never done anything like this before so I don’t know what that was at all, but it looks like something we should do more often.” Maddy said as she kissed the top of Goldie’s head.

“Yes, we should definitely do this more often. We have to be careful though. Not everyone in the world is going to accept women like us. We could even get in trouble in some states for doing this stuff. But I’m not giving you up. We’ll just have to pretend we’re best friends and nothing more in the public eye. At least until we get to Europe that is.” Goldie looked up at Maddy, excitement in her eyes but sadness tinging it as well.

“Is that what you want? A life of lies and no children?” Maddy asked.

“If it’s what I have to do to spend my life with you, Maddy, it’s what I’ll do. And we can always adopt if we want children. It might be harder to do but we can find a way. If not, we’ll live without them. As long as I have you, I’m happy.” Goldie spoke as she pulled Maddy out of the tub. Now it’s your turn, get out of this tub, I can’t do what I want to do to you while we’re in it.

Goldie led Maddy to the large bed dominating the bedroom and pushed her down on the bed. She licked every inch of Maddy’s skin, removing the water that covered her. Front and back, she used her mouth and tongue on Maddy, describing her love with her mouth and hands. Maddy had never felt things like this before, the closest she’d ever come to it was in dreams she’d had but even that didn’t compare to Goldie’s tongue on her skin, her thigh between Maddy’s rubbing against what Goldie told her was her clit.

Goldie worshipped Maddy’s breasts, giving the tips the attention they craved until Maddy couldn’t stand anymore and begged for something that she didn’t know how to describe. Goldie moved between her legs then, leaving her fingers to tease Maddy’s nipples. Wanting to fully please Maddy and give her all the pleasure she could she moved one hand down to Maddy’s opening as her mouth closed over Maddy’s clit. Licking and stroking with her tongue she brought the woman to her first orgasm quickly, surrounding her in pleasure that she’d never known before.

Maddy felt her world explode: her muscles tensing and relaxing as waves of pleasure spread from between her thighs to the rest of her body. She couldn’t stop her back from arching or her head going back as she gasped, a long moan following the exhalation. She was trying to scream “oh my God” but couldn’t speak, she could only feel. Wave after wave the pleasure ripped through her and she rode them until they slowed, falling away as quickly as they came.

Panting, gasping for air and sweating, she looked down at Goldie between her thighs. Smiling she let her hand trail down Goldie’s face, adoring the sight of her there.

“Oh, we’re going to have to do lots more of that my love, lots more!” she said with a smile.

“I love you, I love you so very much Goldie. I want you with me for the rest of my life.” Maddy said as she pulled Goldie up to her, kissing her beautiful mouth.

“I love you too, Maddy for now and always. I’ll never leave you, never.” Goldie swore as she returned Maddy’s passionate kiss.

  Chapter Four

February in New York was atrocious, Maddy thought, as memories played through her mind a year later. Ten months ago she’d left this harbour, bound for Berlin, Paris and London on her own. A few months with Goldie, that’s all she’d had before she’d found the note in her room. Goldie wanted her life back; the sordidness and lack of children far too much for her to endure, the letter had said. Maddy had been heartbroken, but wanted only Goldie’s happiness. Maddy had left her alone, destroying her pain and misery with life as a star; somehow never quite filling the void Goldie had left.

Fearing more pain and rejection, she’d not started a new affair, though there had been offers. However, she’d taken part in a few parties that she’d never be able to tell the papers about. She’d grown up in Europe, in more ways than one but now she was back in America, heading to Georgia to see her parents.

She’d received one last letter from her father; he was dying and still damning her for the life she’d chosen. She’d packed her best finery, her prettiest frocks; as the English women she’d met had called them; her brightest jewellery and set off for home. But she’d also packed her trousers, the suits she wore on stage in Berlin tucked safely in her luggage. That’s what she was going to wear to see her father in. The suits that had made her richer than she’d ever imagined, simply because she wore them on stage.

Stepping onto the porch, Maddy was amazed to see nothing had changed. Not a single thing. Knocking on the door before opening it, Maddy let herself in. The house smelled of decay, as though death had already visited the family. She called out and her mother answered.

“We’re back here, in your room Maddy.” They’d known she was coming, she’d sent a telegram ahead to let them know. Her mother was feeding her father who was resting on some pillows on the bed. She hoped he’d choke then castigated herself for the thought.

As she watched, the bedridden man now unable to speak, shook something at her. Taking the paper from him she saw it was an engagement announcement. Goldie was marrying Jim it seemed. The pain ripped through her heart but she refused to let it show on her face. If the last year had taught her anything, it was to be strong and to hide what you feel.

“Do you think I really care what little miss country girl has accomplished, daddy? Look at me. The suit I have on, the oh so revealing trousers, the tight coat, the silk blouse, all cost more than it would cost to rebuild this house. And I’ll take you away from it all if you want. I’ll buy you and momma a nice house in town, with electricity and running water. Momma deserves a break, some rest. I’ll even hire a nurse for you. Because I’m not you, I’m not totally heartless and cruel. You’re still my father.”

He only looked away, his hand feebly making an attempt to point at the door, his attempt to tell her to get out. Standing over him she wasn’t afraid of him anymore, or ashamed of her life, but she couldn’t be too cruel to him. In his own way, he’d done what he thought was best. Even if it was cruel.

Going out of the room she went to a chair in the kitchen, waiting on her mother to come in. She followed soon after, hugging her daughter close and telling her how she’d missed Maddy.

“I have all of your records stashed away. I used to listen to them when your father went out.” Her mother admitted

“I’m glad you’ve heard them, momma. I really am.”

“The money has helped too. He doesn’t know about it. I’ve saved a lot of it, but it’s helped a lot. Thank you so much, dear girl.”

“You’re very welcome, momma. Can I do anything for you?”

“You can go get that girl of yours back. I know what she means to you and I know her daddy is behind what she’s done. Her mother came and told me what happened, but wouldn’t let me say anything. He had her kidnapped and forced her to sign that note. Then he threatened to expose you both, if she went back. You have enough money now; you could bury him if you wanted to. Get her back, baby. Live the life you want to, the kind of life I could never have. Do it for me, Maddy. Don’t let your life slip away, wondering what could have been!” Her mother’s words ended on tears and she comforted the woman the best she knew how.

  There’s hadn’t been an e
asy relationship but she did love her mother. Settling her on a couch in the sitting room she made promises to her mother.

“He can’t stop us now, Momma. You can have the life you deserve. I’m going to buy you a house, wherever you want it. It will have electricity, running water, whatever you want. Any house you want, just tell me. I’m going to get Goldie back too. If what her mother told you is true, then I’ll get her back and her father can rot.”

They made plans and waited for night to fall, Maddy slipping out as the first hint of darkness appeared in the sky.

Maddy slipped into Goldie’s bedroom and waited behind the door. The room was empty now but she knew Goldie would be in soon enough. She didn’t have to wait long before Goldie came in, slipping to her bed quietly in the dark. She laid there, a fancy dress covering her now thin body. The soft curves had disappeared and she had a haunted look to her face that Maddy longed to wipe away.

“Goldie” she said quietly. “Don’t scream, it’s me, I’m here to get you out.”

“What? Who’s there? Maddy? Oh thank God, Maddy it’s you!” Goldie cried softly.

“Come on, let’s get out of here. Hurry!” Maddy said as she pulled Goldie to the window but Goldie dug her heels in.

“I can’t. Daddy promised he’d ruin us if I left with you or ran away. I can’t do that to you, I can’t ruin your life.” Goldie swore.
