Her Wolf Protector

She supposed this was no less than what she deserved.
“Jesus, and people think Shifters are fucked up.”
At the voice in her ear, Georgia jumped. Across the room, Vincent whirled, flinging a knife through the air towards her left ear.
The intruder beside her caught it with ease. Georgia gaped as Duke Dozier straightened from his place besides her. Of course, he was buck naked from his shift - and didn’t seem to give two fucks that he was facing a pissed-off Hunter.
The next tool Vincent picked up was a gun - and Georgia happened to know that he was a very good shot.
“I will not have Shifter vermin in my house.” He cocked the weapon expertly, and Georgia forgot how to breathe.
Then, the dining room wall exploded. Two wolves burst through in a shower of sheetrock and sparks, barreling Vincent off his feet. When a gunshot sounded, Georgia cried out in fear.
“Breathe, Georgia.” Duke ripped the zip ties from her wrists. “It’s going to be ok.”
He hauled her upright, but Georgia was transfixed by the sight before her.
Vincent fought the wolves that mauled at him tooth and nail. They were bigger and stronger, but he put up quite the fight.
To their merit, they didn’t kill him - though the bloody mess they left him in was hardly any better. Ultimately, Georgia forced herself to look away.
When she raised her gaze again, her breath caught.
Titus was one of the wolves that had come after her, and the other…
“Solomon.” She whispered his name like a prayer, her knees going weak. He was there - right there...but she knew the last thing she deserved was his trust.
Georgia swallowed thickly, her gaze sweeping the injuries that pocked his gorgeous body. “You’re hurt.” She finally croaked.
Solomon merely cleared his throat, wiping Vincent’s blood from his mouth. “I’ll heal.”
What the hell was she supposed to say? That she was sorry? That she would never, even in her wildest dreams, even contemplate being a Hunter?
“For the love of God, Solomon don’t be an ass.” Duke finally broke the silence, his tone aggrieved. “Maybe a trip away from the settlement would benefit you once in a while. If you ever came off the mountain, you’d know that Vincent is a fucking scumbag who abused Georgia for ten years. He and his whole family have always been batshit crazy.”
Georgia looked to the Shifter in shock. Certainly, she’d known that most of the town had a general idea of why her marriage had failed so spectacularly, but she’d never known just how much common knowledge was. “I…He tried to implant the Spark in my sister.” She finally murmured, raising her gaze to Solomon’s in shame. “I couldn’t stop him.”
In two strides, Solomon had her in his arms. “Fuck.”
Georgia trembled. She told herself she wouldn’t cry - that it was over, so why the hell should she cry now, of all times…
And then she was. Great, heaving sobs that stole her strength and made her tremble with grief. Vincent had taken everything from her...and when she thought she might finally have a shot at happiness, he tried to take that too.
But Solomon held her. The warmth of his skin kept her upright until she had cried herself into exhaustion - until she was boneless and the only thing she wanted was to sleep until she forgot the pain that threatened to consume her. When her legs gave way, he lifted her into his arms. “I have you, Sweet.”
His words were all she needed to hear - and Georgia knew she would never let him go.
Chapter 17
Two weeks later…
“Are your eyes closed?”
Georgia sighed in exasperation. “Yes. For the hundredth time, yes.”
Everly’s pleased giggle was almost worth it. “Good. Don’t open them.”
Like she had any choice.
It seemed like ever since Everly had come to live on the mountain with her, she was making up for the few weeks she hadn’t bossed her elder sister around. In any event, the mountain air seemed to be good for her - and she’d shocked even Georgia with how quickly she adjusted.
Pressing her hands to her eyes, Georgia leaned against Solomon’s kitchen table. The last she’d seen of him, he was off for a run with some of the newer members of the pack. The Doziers Ephraim left behind hadn’t joined them seamlessly, but it seemed they trusted more with every passing day.
Thank God Solomon had the patience of a saint.
Georgia jumped at the sound of the front door opening and closing. “Ever?” When silence greeted her call, she frowned. No way in hell Everly had just left her here waiting. She had duties.
She had quit her job at the hospital with Beverly’s blessing and moved into Anne’s hut to serve as the pack healer. Certainly, she had a lot to learn, but Georgia hoped that maybe one day she’d stumble upon something that could cure her sister. Shifters existed beyond natural biology - maybe they could help her make Everly better.
It might be a long shot, but it was better than nothing. “Everly?”
The front door swung open again and Georgia groaned. “Come on, Everly. This is not the time to be playing games.”
“Alright, alright!” She was surprised when her sister answered her almost immediately. “Ok, open them.”
When Georgia lowered her hands, she immediately arched a brow. Everly had brought Thomas and Eunice into their cabin. Not that she had anything against spending time with the elders, but this was hardly the surprise Everly promised her.
“Thomas?” She smiled tentatively. “Eunice? Good to see you. Um...can I make you some coffee.”
“Not here for coffee, girl.” She could always trust Thomas to be direct - just like his grandson. “Here to oversee the rite.”
“The...rite?” Georgia was beyond confused - even more so by Everly’s smug smile.
“The bonding rite.”
When Solomon’s hand covered her shoulder, Georgia looked up at him in surprise. She was torn between how gorgeous he looked with his hair damp from the shower, green eyes gleaming in amusement, and the... bonding rite?
“Come, child. It’s nothing grandiose.” Eunice waved her over impatiently. “But it must be done to induct you into our pack.”
Georgia’s heart leaped. For a moment, she forgot how to use her words properly. “Pack? ...But...I’m human.”
“You’re mate to the Alpha.” Thomas returned brusquely, as if she were ignorant of the fact. “And you will bear his pups. That makes you pack.”
Georgia’s cheeks colored at his implication as she glanced up at Solomon embarrassed. “There’s no guarantee I will...our children might be human.”
“Belleview blood is strong.” Thomas replied firmly. “There will be pups.”
When Georgia’s smile grew uncertain, Solomon leaned down to press a lingering kiss against her neck. “Pups are pups, sweet. Human or wolf. Now, come.” He tugged her from the chair and around the table to stand before the Elders.
This was as far from anything resembling a wedding Georgia had ever imagined, and yet her sister was blubbering like a baby.
“Now.” Eunice took one of Solomon’s hands in her own before raising Georgia’s as well. “Repeat the words. I vow to protect, serve and uphold this bond, as blood flows through my veins.”
When Solomon’s gaze caught hers and held, Georgia’s heart fluttered wildly through her chest.
This was better than any wedding.
He repeated the words as Eunice prompted, sending shivers down her spine. Then, it was Georgia’s turn.
“I vow to protect, serve and uphold this bond, as blood flows through my veins.”
Without a word, Thomas withdrew a knife from the pocket of his jacket, slicing a thin, precise cut across the palms of each of their hands. The moment blood welled, Solomon covered her hand with his.
“It is sworn.” The Elder’s reedy voice filled the cabin, and Eunice nodded, pride in her deep brown gaze.
When Solomon released her hand, Georgia’s breath cau
ght. Of course his wound was already healing, but so was hers. She watched, transfixed, as it knitted closed before her eyes.
“Mazeltov.” Everly enveloped her in a brief hug before dashing tears from her eyes. “Now go consummate that thing.”
Georgia turned beet red, burying her face against Solomon’s chest until her sister and both Elders had left them alone. The moment the door shut, Solomon chucked her chin upward with a single finger, his smile indulgent. “Still modest, Sweet?”
“I’m not a Shifter.” She returned defensively. “I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable running around naked.”
“That is what bothers you,” Solomon returned dryly. “Not that we can turn into monsters, or that we heal life-threatening wounds in days. Nudity.”
“What bothers me,” Georgia deflected, winding her arms around his neck. “Is that you haven’t said it yet.”
Solomon quirked a brow. “Said what?”
He couldn’t honestly be that dense. “Three little words, Solomon? The undying devotion your mate needs to hear?”
With a sigh, Solomon merely rolled his eyes, tossing her over his shoulder. “Human sentiment I’m bonded with you, woman.”
“I still want to hear it.” She gazed up from beneath his arm as he carted her in the direction of the bedroom. “Come on, please-”
“Quiet, woman.” She yelped as he tossed her onto the bed, immediately covering her body with his. Georgia almost forgot the demand she’d made as his hands slid beneath her shirt, creeping steadily northward. “Love is a dull word.” He tugged her against him, molding her body to his from hip to chest. “You want my devotion, you have it. My adoration? It’s yours.” His mouth dropped to the curve of her breast to suck at the sensitive skin there and Georgia sighed in bliss. “You are mine - to protect, live for, and yes, love.” He lifted his head to meet her gaze, and the emotion there stole her breath. “And you’ll tempt me until the day my blood runs cold.”
