According to fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, the most versatile garment is a strip of fabric that can be manipulated into many different styles. This strip of intarsia fabric can become a wrap, shawl, skirt, scarf, or blanket. To add weight and provide a place to attach a shawl pin, I worked an edging along with the intarsia squares. You can embellish this piece sparsely or go over the top to record events and family occasions: buttons from a favorite worn-out dress, ribbons from presents, etc.

Although it looks complicated, this scarf is very simple to knit—the excitement is in the beads. The scarf is knitted in two halves so that the leaf-shaped lace pattern has the same orientation on each half to frame the face nicely. Pretty flounces at the edges add a pleasing feminine silhouette. The contrasting knitted flowers, worked with a delicate beaded cast-on, are sewn in place after the knitting is complete.

Worked in seed stitch with bulky yarn, this purse knits up in a few short hours. It’s the time spent embellishing afterward that transforms it into a something wonderful. I added knitted flowers, pom-poms, ribbons, and buttons for a riotous look. Have fun with this project, but pin the embellishments in place to make sure you have haven’t gone over the top—in some cases, less is more.
