Liberation

The officer drove off and she waited a few seconds before running towards the house. She slammed the door open.

“Guys?” she called. “Evelyn? Aubrey?” she called again.

She walked into the dining room and found Nicky hanging there, his throat cut. She shrieked and, as she turned to look away, she walked into the knife that Kiara held out.

  “Hello, mommy.”

  Epilogue

When Karen came around, she sat on the forest floor. Her belly was warm and she felt sleepy. There was a sharp pain in her abdomen and she looked down to see her stomach soaked with blood. She looked up again to see Evelyn standing in front of her with a knife. No, it couldn’t be Evelyn; she could see in her eyes that her daughter was long gone.

“Who are you?” she asked, feeling as though she was running out of breath.

  “My name is Kiara.”

“You killed my son. Where is the rest of my family?” she asked, looking around. “Where are my children? My husband?”

“I thought I was your child, mommy,” she said. “I thought you were stuck with me forever.”

“You’re not my daughter; she’s gone.”

“Not gone,” Kiara explained. “I just remembered who I am.”

“You killed that girl’s family,” Karen said, shivering as a fever took hold of her. “You’re going to kill me.”

“You’re already dying, mommy,” Kiara said, “but this has inspired me. See, you have given me a new way forward. Poor Kiara, the little orphan girl. Imagine the families I will have access to.”

Karen shook her head. “No, I won’t let you.”

“You do not have the power to stop me.”

“But I do,” Amari said from a few meters away.

Kiara shifted to look at her. “Amari, I was wondering where you were. I spared you the last time we were together.”

“Raven protected me, and she protects me now.”

Lightning flashed across the sky and standing in Amari’s place was Raven, who quickly changed back to Amari once the lightning was gone.

“Possession is not only for the evil of this world,” Raven/Amari said.

“Raven,” Kiara sighed, “I thought I got rid of you in that other forest.”

Karen’s head rolled forward and Raven looked at her. “She’s your last victim, Kiara.”

“You can’t stop me,” Kiara smiled. “There is nothing you can do to stop me.”

Raven held up a leather-bound book. “Oh, but I can.”

Staring at the volume, Kiara showed true fear. “No! No! You will not trap me in there again.”

She rushed towards Raven, but before she could raise her knife to plunge it into Raven’s heart, Raven lifted a gun to Kiara’s head height and said, “Who said anything about trapping you?”

Kiara froze just as Raven pulled the trigger, blowing a hole straight through Kiara’s skull.

Raven then smiled and swung around, leaving Amari’s body and walking away

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hailing from Johannesburg, Southern Africa, Sian B. Claven has enjoyed stories for all her life, whether she was reading them or making them. She has written for as long as she can remember, but Ensnared is the first book she decided to publish. Moving towards writing more for a horror genre, when Sian isn’t thinking of ways to terrify people, she enjoys writing science fiction stories, poetry and rather long and gushy birthday wishes. When she isn’t working on her writing you can find her knitting, scrap booking, reading, or playing Xbox. Sian was previously a reviewer for The Blithering Bibliomaniacs and clearly doesn’t know what the words rest and relaxation mean, at least not in the traditional sense.
