Night Flyer

Gabe was quiet as he studied Deuce closely, his eyes looking just as pointed and sharp as they did when he was the Night Flyer. “You must have been one hell of a priest. Where did you get all that wisdom?”
“I studied at the feet of a great man, Father Joseph Rawlins. He set me straight on a lot of things. He was the best, a wonderful man, and anything that I have learned, I learned from him.”
“Well…okay, but…well…now you’ve made me feel a little foolish.”
“That’s just a bonus.”
They both laughed.
“Don’t forget one more thing,” Deuce added. “In the midst of all this He brought the two of us together. And who knows, maybe it couldn’t have happened any other way. I think we’ve both been blessed.”
“I guess so,” Gabe said, finally convinced.

While the two men sat quietly with their hands meeting in a loving squeeze, with eyes only for each other, little did they know that just beyond the glass in the door was a crowd of reporters looking through at the famed Night Flyer and the demoralized priest of Sacred Heart Church.
Knowing that they had one hell of a story to tell, these newspaper reporters immediately put their pens to paper, and began scribbling across their pads while stiff anchors spoke into humming mini-cams. But this time, instead of ripping the gambler-turned-priest to shreds in the tabloids, and pulling the Night Flyer down off his superhero throne, they told a much different story.
One of them just happened to be a daring young artist who drew cartoon characters for a local publishing firm. Inspired to put his pen to paper as well, the young artist didn’t write words, instead he began sketching out a cartoon character tearing his shirt open in the midst of a gigantic wind. When the writer’s pen was finally at rest, and he looked at his finished work, he smiled, because he knew that the superhero this world had called Night Flyer would live again.
