He pulled back and pushed in again, and I squeezed around his length. “Oh, Jesus, Avery.”

Bucking my hips and meeting every thrust, the mattress squeaked in protest as Todd plowed into me. Not only owning my body but my thoughts as well. Every part of me throbbed but not with pain, with exquisite pleasure. My body hummed as I threw my head back, and my fingers clawed at Todd’s back, exploring the texture of his skin.

We were both covered in sweat as we panted and moaned, and I gripped around Todd’s dick as he rammed into me. His frenzied thrusts had me crying out, “Harder,” while sweat dripped from his chin and plopped onto my chest.

It was as though I had woken from a bad dream, and I squealed as pleasure licked over my skin. My body tingled as Todd’s scent, mingling with my own aroma, washed over me. “I like that. Don’t stop,” I pleaded as his huge cock stretched and filled me.

We matched each other’s rhythm, him thrusting while I raised my hips to meet him. Todd’s smoldering eyes focused on my face while I feasted on his chest as he heaved and grunted with each push.

His eyes crinkled, revealing faint lines as my hand slid over my sweat-soaked skin and wrapped round my shaft. “Do it,” he begged. “Stroke your dick so I can watch.”

After giving my length two quick pumps and focusing on the sensation rippling through my body, Todd panted, “Look at me, babe.”

Blinking sweat out of eyes, I stared at Todd through a fringe of lashes. The feral expression on his face and the power of his voice had me surrendering to him. Molten waves of pleasure rippled over my body as Todd plunged in and out, and I matched his rhythm while tugging at my length.

Our frenzied movements had me purring while Todd fucking me wrapped me in a web of lust. I couldn’t get enough of this man. I grunted and pumped my dick as he tossed his head back, and a spray of sweat soared through the air like a shampoo advertisement.

As I edged closer to orgasm, I shrieked, “I’m coming, Todd!”

The mattress bounced as he pounded into me. “You are mine, omega,” he yelled. “All mine.” He reared back, his eyes to the ceiling, his mouth open as he emptied his seed inside me. “Yes!”

My body convulsed and I lost the power of speech. Unintelligible sounds erupted from my lips as my eyes snapped shut and I shattered, sending streams of cum over both of us.

  “Oh.”

Lying on Todd’s comfortable mattress and enjoying the warm blissful post-orgasm euphoria, I opened one eye as Todd slid off me.

“What do you mean oh? Is something wrong?”

Todd walked into the bathroom and dropped something in the trash. He poked his head through the doorway. “It’s nothing.”

I leaped off the bed, conscious that I was naked and covered in slick and Todd’s seed.

“Tell me the truth, Todd. Are you disappointed?”

“God, no. Sex with you was perfect. Better than I had imagined all these weeks. And trust me, I imagined plenty. You were in my head, Avery, and still are.” He trailed a finger along my jaw.

“If we’re going to mean something to one another, the first rule is honesty,” I told him.

He took a deep breath and jerked his head in the direction of the trash. “The condom.”

  “What about it?”

“It broke.” He searched my eyes.

“Shit!” Way to ruin our first time.

“Don’t worry. I’m sure it’ll be fine,” he reassured me. “These things are crap. they break all the time.”

“No, they don’t. Please tell me you’re not a Cheap Charlie and bought discount condoms?”

He scratched his head. “I didn’t know there was such a thing.”

  “I don’t know either, I’m just saying… no, I’m freaking out.”

Todd led me back to the bedroom and sat me on the mattress. “What are the odds?”

“No idea, and I’m not about to look them up and worry more than I am.”

“This isn’t how I wanted our first time to end. I expected us to be sitting up in bed sipping champagne and feeding each other strawberries dipped in chocolate.” He pushed the hair back from my face.

“You’re trying to distract me, Todd.”

  “Is it working?”

“Maybe.” I took his hand and squeezed.

“No matter what happens, it’ll be okay. I promise.” He got up. “Don’t move.”

Later as we toasted one another with bubbly and nibbled on sweet strawberries and chocolate, my mind drifted to the possibility of getting pregnant. Stop overthinking things, Avery. As Todd said, what are the odds?

  Can you come over, please?

Each word conveyed a sense of urgency, and I wished I could magic myself over to his place. But life was getting in the way. I replied to Avery’s text with, I’m in a meeting. Can it wait?

  Guess it’ll have to.

I couldn’t get those words out of my head, and while I was physically in the conference room with my colleagues, my mind was elsewhere.

It was after 6:30 by the time we were done, and as I drove to his house, I went over what he wanted to discuss. The obvious one was he wanted to break up. We hadn’t been together long—just over a month—and while he’d met Jamie and we’d had dinner with his sister, there was still so much to discover about one another.

We were at the beginning of what I’d hoped was a life-long journey of discovery, though Avery had been distant the past few days. He’d snapped when he tripped over my shoes, which was fair enough. I hadn’t put them away. And I forgot to empty the dishwasher—another check in the Todd-is-failing-as-a-partner column.

But it was hardly breakup material. Or is it? It was often little things that built up over time that had couples sniping at one another. Small mistakes such as not putting out the trash. Though we didn’t live together, we did spend most nights at either his place or mine.

I’d been preoccupied at work and hadn’t been paying as much attention as I should have to Avery’s needs. I sat in the car outside his house, drumming my knuckles on the steering wheel as I put off hearing the news.

But Avery had either heard me or was watching for my car at the window. The front door opened. There was no way to pretend I hadn’t seen him. I waved and headed up the path, inhaling the gentle fragrance of the garden as I’d done that first day when I’d fallen into the lake.

Avery was wearing sweatpants and a raggedy old tee while his hair was sticking out at all ends and his bleary eyes avoided my gaze. Whatever it is, it’s not good.

“Are you sick? You’re very pale.” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, I regretted them. I screwed up my face as Avery’s glowering expression told me I’d messed up. I outstretched my arms expecting him to fall into my embrace, but he backed off, leaving me to close the door.

“You should sit,” he said as he stood behind an armchair. This was worse than I expected, but at least he had allowed me into the house. That’s a good sign. I think.

“Remember the first night we slept together.”

“Yeah.” Where was this going? Rather than yelling at me for my forgetfulness or untidiness, we were taking a stroll down memory lane. Weird.

“So, you’ll recall what else happened that night?”

  “Is this a trick question?”

He gripped the back of the chair. “This is serious, Todd.”

“Okay.” It wasn’t, but until I found out what was going on, I’d agree with whatever Avery said. “It was amazing. We gave ourselves to one another.”

  “It was until…”

And there it was. The buts, therefores, and untils always managed to ruin a good time. I furrowed my brow. “What?”

  “The condom broke.”

  I grinned. “It couldn’t cope.”

But Avery didn’t smile. Our eyes locked on one another. And then it hit me what he was saying and the world tilted on its side as I held on for dear life. Thoughts tumbled around in my head and every ti
me I tried to speak, the words poked fun at me and ran away.

I gulped and stood up. I had to do something as my mouth opened and closed. Avery was digging his nails into the chair and his white knuckles stood out against the blue fabric. “You’re…” I couldn’t finish. “You’re…” Again the words didn’t come.

  “Pregnant.” Avery finished my sentence.

“But that’s amazing.” Based on his expression, he didn’t agree.

“How can you say that?” he snapped.

“A baby, Avery. We made a baby.” I reached out to him, but he swerved away and headed to the kitchen.

  “I get it, Todd, but…”

  “You don’t want it?”

“No.” He shook his head. “I mean, yes. What I’m trying to say is yes, I want this child, but we’ve barely started a relationship. We don’t live together. I don’t even know your favorite color.”

  “Purple,” I said.

  “Be serious.”

  “I am. I love purple.”

Avery stamped his foot. “You’re impossible.” He filled the kettle. “Aren’t you angry?”

  “About?”

  “Me getting pregnant.”

I shook my head. “No. I agree the timing isn’t ideal, but we can make it work.”

  “Tea?”

“I’d prefer something stronger.” Again he made a face. “But as you can’t, tea’s perfect.”

  “I thought you’d be pissed.”

“Then you don’t know me very well.”

“And there you have it. That’s part of the problem.” He put two spoonfuls of tea leaves into the pot. “We’re virtual strangers.”

I grabbed him around the hip and pulled him closer. “I wouldn’t say that.” I nuzzled his throat, and he arched his back and whimpered.

  “You know what I mean.”

“Look, both of us have experienced what happens when life gets tipped upside down and bad stuff happens. And now we’re on a roller coaster, but something amazing has happened and we have no choice but to take a seat. There’ll be ups and downs, lots of screaming and stomach clenching, and we’ll be hanging on by our fingertips. But at the end, I hope we’ll say, ‘What a ride.’”

Avery poked out his bottom lip. “I get sick on roller coasters.”

  “Now who isn’t being serious?”

“Why did you never have another child with Billy?”

“We wanted to but it never happened,” I told him. “We were so young when Jamie was born.”

“And now you’re old.” He sniggered.

“This old man has life left in him yet.”

His eyes flicked to my crotch. “I can see that.”

I sat in the shade of a magnolia tree while Molly slept beside me in her carrier as Todd worked in the garden. Sipping on lemonade he had made and reading a few words of a book before closing my eyes and inhaling the garden’s summer perfume was the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The hum of a cordless grass trimmer had me open one eye and admire Todd’s broad back. Dark patches of sweat were scattered over the white tee. My cock swelled, wishing I could drag him inside for a quickie. Maybe tonight after the baby’s in bed.

The purring of the machine and the gentle buzz of insects had my lids closing again as a delicious sleepiness took hold of me.

  “Avery?”

“Mmmm.” I didn’t bother opening my eyes. Todd was cutting the grass. It was hardly brain surgery and I was sure he could cope.

“Did you like that pretty flowering bushy plant thing near the gate?”

My eyes snapped open and I stood up. “What?”

Todd was peering at the remains of my lilac bush. “Sorry.”

“That was one of my favorites.” I kneeled on the grass and inhaled its fragrance. It was the first shrub I’d planted after I bought the house.

He sat beside me. “It needs a proper funeral.”

“It’ll grow again. Hopefully.” But I draped an arm over his shoulder. “But you owe me.”

“I’ll go to the garden center later and buy you another one,” he said as he collected flowers and stalks.

I grabbed his sweaty shirt and yanked him closer. “That won’t be necessary.”

He smirked. “I like where this is going. Did you have something else in mind?”

Fluttering my lashes, I said, “How did you guess?”

He glanced over my shoulder and I followed his gaze. “Just checking no one’s watching,” he whispered as he cupped my swollen cock.”

“What are you doing? Not in front of Molly and the whole neighborhood,” I gushed.

“She’s asleep and there’s no one about.”

I slapped his arm. “They’re all peering through the lace curtains.”

“We can give them something to remember.”

  I pulled away.

“Fine. I’ll take our daughter to her room and meet you in ours in three minutes.”

“Make that two. And wash the dirt off your hands.” I slapped his ass and raced through the door, kicking my shoes off and undoing the buttons on my shirt as Todd picked up the baby carrier.

He made it in less than 90 seconds and stood in the doorway, his eyes raking over my naked body as I lay sprawled on the bed. I got up on one elbow and stroked my cock. “What took you so long?” Being new parents, sex had taken a back seat after Molly’s birth as hormones and exhaustion had us grabbing sleep whenever we could.

Todd didn’t bother with his shirt. He undid his pants and shuffled toward the bed as they fell to his ankles. I reached out and stroked his engorged dick before running my tongue over the shaft. He whimpered and collapsed on the bed beside me before placing his lips on mine.

“Please don’t tell me you’re too exhausted for sex,” I mumbled while he nibbled my lower lip.

“Never!” he growled as he grabbed my ass.

“I wanna buy this for my dad,” a tiny voice squeaks from below the counter as a wooden figurine of a father holding his child is set ever so carefully down on i
t in front of me. “It’s, uh, for Father’s Day.”

I can’t see the face belonging to the shy, timid voice, but I smile and pick up the figurine. “Of course. This, I think, is the perfect Father’s Day present.”

I mean every word of that. I’m not trying to be a salesman right now.

I turn the figurine over in my callused hands, smiling to myself as I do so. It’s one of my favorite pieces that I’ve ever carved, and I’m so glad it’s going for the reason intended. My wood carvings somewhat abstract the silhouettes of people, and—I think—make them more universal for the gift receiver. In this particular carving, a father holds his child in a gentle, loving gesture that also has a hint of protectiveness.

It’s amazing how much emotion you can portray while whittling wood with a knife. I wish more people would appreciate my figurines like this rather than my birdhouses that my little stand sells at the local farmer’s market. It took me over two weeks to get this little hunk of wood into this shape, and I’m fucking proud of it.

Finally, I look down at the kid buying the figurine, and my heart goes out for him. He couldn’t be older than five, with a shock of thick dark black hair and amber eyes. He watches me expectantly, and I wonder if this is the first purchase he’s ever made by himself.

He’s so adorable, and my smile broadens as I go over to my till and type in the price to get sales tax. “That’ll be...thirty-seven dollars and nineteen cents,” I say, giving him a fifty percent discount. The carving took me a long, long time to make, and I’m definitely selling this at a loss, but I want to keep the boy happy.

Also, I truly believe that there’s a rightful owner for every piece I make, and I just found the owner of this carving.

The little boy digs into his pocket and comes up with a wad of one-dollar bills. He reaches up and puts it on the counter, and coins plink and roll away. I don’t even have to count the amount of money that’s there to know that he’s way short of $37.19.
