Carl looked at the weapon then looked away towards the train tracks. He slowly moved sideways across the platform, towards its edge.
‘One way or another you’re coming with me. You either go by car or ambulance, the choice is yours,’ the officer said, closing one eye and lining up the steel sight on Carl’s chest.
Carl edged towards the platform edge. The rumble grew louder as the next train travelled through the tunnel and approached the station. He looked down at the tracks and then towards the tunnel. He’d lost everyone he’d ever loved and he had nothing. His choices were simple, be locked up in this strange city, be shot or end it all here and now. All he had to do was step in front of the train and it would all be over.
‘Son, stop, please,’ the officer said, lowering his weapon. ‘Whatever it is, it’s not worth losing your life over, trust me. We can work this out, get you back home.’
Carl took another step and balanced on the stone edge of the platform. ‘Where am I?’
‘Baker Street,’ the policeman said.
‘What town?’
‘I don’t understand, son. You’re in Baker Street Underground station near Central London.’
The train exited the tunnel and approached the platform as Carl turned towards the tracks and leaned forward. ‘What year?’
The policeman stepped forward, holding a hand up. ‘What do you mean?’
‘What year is it!’ Carl shouted over the noise.
‘2049, son, now step away, please.’
Carl fell to his knees and sobbed into his hands as the carriages rushed past him and the train came to a slow stop. ‘It’s not possible,’ he said as a crowd gathered around to watch and the handcuffs locked into place. He was over three hundred years in the past.
